Since the last time this was discussed on the wiki was about a year ago, I should probably turn on the kettle and reboot this idea.
I've been thinking recently on rebooting the Civ Universe, because right now the idea of having an intermediate section between a one-world setting like the Fantasyverse and the political sentiments of the Fictionverse seems like an attractive idea. Whilst we've been discussing geographical ideas and names for a planet, little I think has gone into the idea of the actual situation of the Civ Universe, which is why so far I have found it a bit of a flat idea.
If I were to put forward some ideas on settings and themes:
- I had the idea that the present day, whatever year you'd like to say it is, would be somewhere between 100 - 200 years after a World War II-like conflict that has left the world warming up with political relations after a massive blowout. This might give rise to the idea of some sour sentiments in politics and the economy.
- Drawing upon the modern day is a good enough starting point. Ideas like Third world political turmoil, terrorism, technological advancement, secret conflicts and corporate warfare, transapient augmentations and modification, artificial intelligence, paranormal and occult activity, proxy wars (as stated by Luc/Hachi) might rise a bit of a dystopian feeling...but then again, so is Earth in the 21st Century.
- As for time frame, most of us like the idea of it being set somewhere between the 21st Century - 23rd Century in terms of technological evolution and aesthetics.
As we're all gamers...mostly I think...settings drawn from Metal Gear, Deus Ex, Tom Clancy, Mass Effect, etc (thanks again to Hachi) seem good to me. The only things I'd like to change personally from the original idea is the geography of the planet...coming up with a different map or something like that.
