Primates (Linnaeus, 1758) are an order of mammals displaying the following characteristics:
- Pectoral collar bones
- Shoulder joints allowing full swiveling of the arm
- Five digits on each foot
- Opposable thumbs and big toes
- Nails on each digit
- Sensitive, tactile pads on each digit's end
- Small snout/nose
- Few teeth compared to early mammals
- Highly specialized color vision and visual acuity
- Large brain
- Large cerebral cortex
- Two mammary glands
- 1-2 young per pregnancy
- Long gestation/developmental period
- Trend toward an upright posture
