A Prey Cell is a cell smaller than the player cell. Prey cells disappear after the player levels up, presumably because they are too small for you to see once you reach that size.
Prey cells can be killed in one hit. Using poison kills large amounts of prey cells quickly, so Junior swarms can be killed easily with this part.
