Nivenia Prime, the fifth planet from the primary of the Nivenia System, is an Ecumenopolis where the seat of government of the Nivenian Empire is located. This planet, although producing hundreds of times more energy than it receives from its sun, is cooled by massive 2800 K radiators attached to similarly massive heat exchange systems to keep the entirety of the planet at a pleasant 22.4 Celsius. Nivenia Prime is able to support an absurd number of inhabitants since there is more than twelve kilometers of city sitting above the crust.

Nivenia Prime was once a world much like any other, when a brutal thermonuclear war stripped it of all multicelluar life except the Nivenians and their crops, which were safely protected inside domed cities. The following planetary urbanization started as a gradual merger of domes, until the entire planet was domed over. Then the seams between the domes slowly disappeared as more and more buildings were torn down and replaced inside them, followed by the gradual replacement of plexiglass with metal and LED lighting as buildings were built on the top. These processes repeated four times, each time adding another layer to the planet. Around a hundred years ago, the process had to cease since the structures on the bottom could no longer bear the weight of the structures above them. The planet is now composed of five cityscapes, the uppermost one exposed to the sky and the lowermost one sitting on a planet-wide foundation of metal. Each layer is 2.5 km and 500 floors thick. The highest structures are not the uppermost skyscrapers, but he three orbital rings that encircle the planet at an altitude of 200 km. Although the planet has a very large population, landfloor area values are similar to southern U.S. cities in the early 21st century. The conditions are crowded, but not excessively so.

Due to the Nivenian Empire's involvement in the Universal Trading Union, a wormhole has been set up at the L1 Lagrange point of Nivenia Prime and Nivenia A. Electromagnetic accelerators have been installed to provide the most energy efficient, reliable, and passenger-friendly transport possible with current Nivenian technology.

A superintelligent computer, NP-L2-ASI01 exists at the L2 Lagrange point of Nivenia Prime and Nivenia A.

Nivenia Prime is arguably the wealthiest large section of the Nivenian Empire; tax money from the entire Nivenian Empire flows to Nivenia Prime for collection, and primary industry has long since stripped the planet clean of valuable resources, leaving only secondary and tertiary industry behind. This, coupled with the fact that the Nivenian Empire is arguably only held together by the supply of fusion reaction igniters, a component only manufactured on Nivenia Prime, makes Nivenia Prime a hub of science, engineering, law, and luxury items.

Like most provinces of the Nivenian Empire, Nivenia Prime elects a coordinator every ten years through oligarchic methods (the most intelligent and accomplished 0.0025% of the population are allowed to vote). However, due to the fact that this intelligence and accomplishment rating is tallied over the whole Nivenian Empire, and the abundance of research labs on Nivenia Prime, the proportion of voters to the total population is shifted up almost an order of magnitude. Most political issues brought up on Nivenia Prime involve extremely slight modifications of the planet-wide controlled environment.

The economy of Nivenia Prime is very strong, as having quadrillions of people helps a lot. However, the planet also needs to constantly import food from the ringworlds, but food is at a huge surplus anyway.

An interesting fact about Nivenia Prime is that over 96% of the researchers in the Nivenian Empire live there. There are massive financial benefits to working in one of the planet's enormously massive research centers, and the planet's infrastructure, being the most advanced in the Nivenian Empire, provides real-world testing for many new inventions.

A full fifth of the employment opportunities on Nivenia Prime have something to do with running the half million fusion power plants, the hundreds of colossal radiators, the heat exchange equipment, or the coolant ducts involved with keeping the planet from turning red-hot and cooking its inhabitants. Another fifth manages the mass transport systems, bureaucracy, and the law enforcement. Of the rest, most work in industry and research.

Industries and Products[]

Nivenia Prime mainly specializes in electronics, shields, televisions, and in general complex devices which require a lot of labor per kilogram of the object produced. Another major export is law and bureaucratic oversight of the Nivenian Empire at large. As such, the Nivenian seat of power is in the Administrative District on Nivenia Prime.

The Administrative District[]

  • Population - 23,923 Billion
  • Jobs - 294,825 Billion
  • Traffic - Medium, except at rush hour
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals easily accessible, orbital rings intersect overhead
  • Area - 800,000 km^2
  • Population Density - "low" residence, but very high job density, even for Nivenia Prime
  • Location - Central point of Sunside
  • Terrain - Entire district is one giant monolithic building 20 km high with a radiator an top.

The Administrative district is a massive monolithic building with a radiator on top designed to handle the majority of the Nivenian legal and bureaucratic system. Over two hundred trillion work as bureaucrats, and lawyers and judges are also prevalent. The noted hall of justice, an area of 20,000 square kilometers completely dedicated to swift judgement (not necessarily justice, but usually close enough), is located in the middle of the Administrative district, and at the center of the hall of justice is the Imperial throne.

Some interesting stories about the Administrative district have circulated, including the tale of a citizen coming to complain about a pothole who got lost in the endless maze of cubicles for twenty years. While most of the Nivenians discount this as utter nonsense, there are bureaucrats and secretaries who insist that they met the lost Nivenian in question.

The Asylum District[]

  • Population - 237,923 Billion
  • Jobs - 64,825 Billion
  • Traffic - Low to Medium, except at rush hour
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals easily accessible
  • Area - 500,000 km^2
  • Population Density - extreme, even for Nivenia Prime
  • Location - North-by-northeastern twilight areas, close to Nightside
  • Terrain - Uppermost two levels are normal, bottom three are fused into one giant building, and extend 10 km farther down than normal. Indistinguishable from orbit.

The Asylum district is another colossal building, though not quite as big as the Administrative district. This district houses the trillions of institutionalized Nivenians on Nivenia Prime and from the space stations (Ringworlds and mining colonies have their own Asylums.). The rumors about the district are even more pervasive than the rumors about the Administrative District, as there are billions of escaped inmates who wander the halls aimlessly, until they can be apprehended and sent back to their cells. The layers above the actual asylum seem relatively normal, but since former inmates sometimes escape, these areas have comparatively low land values.

The Atmospheric Reprocessing District[]

  • Population - 56,384 Billion
  • Jobs - 87,921 Billion
  • Traffic - High
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals easily accessible
  • Area - 1,000,000 km^2
  • Population Density - average
  • Location - Magnetic south pole
  • Terrain - Surface covered by giant radiators and air intake tubes, chemical plants and fusion reactors cover lower levels.

The atmospheric reprocessing district is a huge complex of buildings dedicated to producing petroleum from excess water and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, releasing oxygen. Even though this process takes huge amounts of energy, the fusion reactors on the lowest levels tirelessly convert hydrogen to helium to provide power to these devices. The petroleum produced is used as fuel for the cars and buses that traverse the planet. Contrary to popular expectation, this district is actually one of the wealthiest districts on Nivenia Prime due to the importance of its task and the number of jobs available for chemical engineers. The atmospheric reprocessing district is known throughout the Nivenian Empire as the capital of chemical engineering.

The Botanical District[]

  • Population - 21,238 Billion
  • Jobs - 127,091 Billion
  • Traffic - Low, except at rush hour
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals hard to access
  • Area - 700,000 km^2
  • Population Density - "low" residence, but high job density, even for Nivenia Prime
  • Location - Southeast nightside
  • Terrain - Huge hydroponic gardens cover the insides of the buildings.

The botanical district is a district providing expensive home-grown food to Nivenia Prime. The district is partly closed off from the rest of the planet, as immigration rules are very strict, even though there are plenty of migrant workers. This district is essentially what remains of the radical environmentalist movement of hundreds of years ago. The buildings here are not only filled with plants, but plants roll down the sides too. This district has numerous rumors attached to it, as the "resident botanists" who live in and own the district are very reclusive. Some of the rumors have been verified too, for example the resident botanists embrace fanatic egalitarianism, but this only applies to resident botanists. They all own equal shares of the entire district, which acts like a corporation, and live in relative luxury compared to the migrant workers.

  • The botanical district was inspired by the Mycogen sector of the planet Trantor from Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.

The Buford Lambert District[]

  • Population - 471,293 Billion
  • Jobs - 18,026 Billion
  • Traffic - Congested
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals easy to access, orbital rings intersect overhead
  • Area - 1,000,000 km^2
  • Population Density - Extremely high
  • Location - Central nightside
  • Terrain - Lots of apartment buildings

The Buford Lambert district is a district named after its founder and sole owner, Buford Lambert, who bought up the land that would become the district in 128 BNE and turned it all into apartments. This district is completely filled with apartment buildings, and has the capacity to hold half a quadrillion Nivenians. Other than its odd makeup, this district is only interesting otherwise since almost all of its populace consider themselves "lower-middle-class," a fact largely due to the fact that all of the apartments are priced for a "lower-middle-class" market. On Nivenia Prime, Lambert is as influential in politics as the Edwards family, and has held the position of Regional Coordinator of his district since 105 BNE, when the position was established.

The Chemical District[]

  • Population - 8,934 Billion
  • Jobs - 39,127 Billion
  • Traffic - Medium, except at rush hour
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals easily accessible
  • Area - 200,000 km^2
  • Population Density - Medium-low, for Nivenia Prime
  • Location - Just west of the magnetic south pole
  • Terrain - Chemical plants, radiators

The Chemical District is a relatively small district due to outsourcing of chemical industries to other planets hundreds of years ago, but the industry is still very strong. Biological waste and raw materials are processed here to create quadrillions of tonnes of fertilizer every year. The fertilizer is distributed to the ringworlds, where it is used to grow the food that feeds Nivenia Prime. Proximity to the Atmospheric Reprocessing district allows for the transfer of atmospheric carbon to the Chemical district for transformation into fertilizer. Like the Atmospheric Reprocessing district, the Chemical district is one of the wealthiest districts of the planet.

The Commercial District[]

  • Population - 4,588 Billion
  • Jobs - 30,012 Billion
  • Traffic - Medium, except at rush hour
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals easily accessible
  • Area - 250,000 km^2
  • Population Density - "Low," for Nivenia Prime, but high job density
  • Location - Northeastern nightside,
  • Terrain - Shopping malls, etc.

The Commercial district is essentially an extension of the Economic district geared toward consumer products. Generally considered one of the higher-quality districts in terms of living standard, this district boasts thousands of square kilometers of malls extending kilometers up and down. The largest air pump on Nivenia Prime is in this district, continually pumping air back up to the top of a ten-kilometer lobby. The shopping options here are enormous, but so is the possibility of getting lost in the endless maintenance tunnels under the lowest level. The "catacombs" as they are called, are a domed city from hundreds of years ago that was almost totally wrecked by a nuclear warhead dring the civil wars in 525 BNE. The dome roof was mostly intact, so the corporations never tore it down and just built on top of it. To this day is serves purposes as secret clubhouse location for groups of hoodlums who occasionally find an antique item, centuries old, left by a prior group of hoodlums.

The Departmental District[]

  • Population - 13,294 Billion
  • Jobs - 80,928 Billion
  • Traffic - Medium, except at rush hour
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals easily accessible
  • Area - 400,000 km^2
  • Population Density - "low" residence, but very high job density, even for Nivenia Prime
  • Location - East-central Sunside
  • Terrain - Office buildings, radiators

The Departmental district is essentially a more conventionally formatted administrative district, dominated by the gargantuan bureaucratic skyscrapers. While the Administrative district is focused on government activites, the departmental district is leased out to corporations and researchers. Currently, the headquarters of the Megastructural Construction Corporation is located here, spanning 68.5% of the district. The rest is mainly dominated by research institutions and supercomputers. The Departmental district is much easier to navigate than the denser Administrative district, but is smaller and was constructed more recently.

The departmental district was notably the sight of a huge performance by Galactic Star JGoofy on Dekemurios 10, 24 NE.

The Distribution District[]

  • Population - 9,783 Billion
  • Jobs - 63,890 Billion
  • Traffic - Very high
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals everywhere, orbital ring accesible
  • Area - 800,000 km^2
  • Population Density - "low" residence, but medium-high job density
  • Location - Central western twilight (from sunside)
  • Terrain - Warehouses, transportation networks

The Distribution district is the location on the planet where all of the on-planet manufactured products, packages, and mail are stored. Warehouses and transportation dominate this district, creating a huge industry, employing trillions, solely dedicated to package distribution. Paperwork for shipping just complicates the matter, as it has to be shipped itself to the Administrative district. The Distribution district, while extremely fast-paced and busy, is always looking for new drivers and accountants, and employs many of the semi-skilled workers on Nivenia Prime. Aside from collective fees from the clients in return for shipping, the Distribution district has two orbital rings intersect overhead, making it a major spaceport as well. A third way for the district to make money is the rental of warehouse space to private corporations.

The Economic District[]

  • Population - 13,305 Billion
  • Jobs - 57,024 Billion
  • Traffic - Medium, except at rush hour
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals easily accesable
  • Area - 500,000 km^2
  • Population Density - average, but high job density, even for Nivenia Prime
  • Location - Northeastern nightside
  • Terrain - Office buildings

The Economic district is a district mainly focused on business and home to historic buildings like the Nivenia planetary stock exchange and the Nivenia Chamber of Commerce. Huge office buildings dominate the area, filled with banks, smaller stock exchanges, computers, and millions of ticker tape recycling plants. While the MCC still maintains a strong presence, this district is mostly used by on-planet corporations looking for good deals, lower taxes, and financial statements. In addition to this, the Economic district also contains the Nivenia Prime University of Business, widely considered the most prestigious business school in the entire system. The immigration office is also located here, presumably so that immigrants from across the system can immediately find jobs. The district is in a massive boom currently due to trade with the New Cyrannian Republic and JCompany, and is the home base of a new third-party xenophillic faction.

The Electoral District[]

  • Population - 4,723 Billion
  • Jobs - 6,902 Billion
  • Traffic - Low, except at rush hour
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals difficult to access
  • Area - 150,000 km^2
  • Population Density - average
  • Location - Southern sunside
  • Terrain - Office buildings, government buildings, voting booth buildings, extremely mazy

The Electoral district is the seat of regional and planetary political power. Most of the planetary control systems are located here, along with three artificial intelligences used for campaigning. Political parties competing in the planetary elections typically are headquartered here, with rallies typically being held twice daily by regional candidates.

The Electoral district is designed to be hard to get in and out of and easy to get lost in since politicians want to lower voter turnout as much as they can while still appearing to have enough voting booths. In reality, not only is the interior designed to make you lost on your way to the bathroom, but there is not bathroom and half of the voting booths are fake. Voting here can be extremely perilous due to the fact that the Electoral district is always fiercely fought-over territory by the local, regional, and planetary mafia groups.

The Energy District[]

  • Population - 32,903 Billion
  • Jobs - 38,180 Billion
  • Traffic - Very high
  • Mass transit - Hyper-sonic subway terminals extremely easy to access
  • Area - 1,000,000 km^2
  • Population Density - relatively low, for Nivenia Prime
  • Location - Southeastern sunside
  • Terrain - Fusion plants, radiators, transformers, cables

The Energy district contains 350,000 fusion reactor complexes, each producing a hundred terawatts, and is completely owned by the Megastructural construction corporation. The district contains very little in the way of city-looking structures, instead containing 5 kilometers of fusion reactor complexes and transformers and power lines on the bottom, followed by ten kilometers of massive heat exchange and air-conditioning systems, followed by a massively gigantic radiator.

The inhabitants of the Energy district are usually quite wealthy, as they have the positions of technicians and engineers in the systems that keep the planet from overheating and blowing up. This has caused most citizens of Nivenia Prime to have a deep respect of heat exchange technicians and fusion engineers that is not felt in some other places.

For the history of Nivenia Prime before the Nivenian civilization arose, see here.

For the history of Nivenia Prime, and the Nivenian Empire at large between 800 BNE 20 NE, please refer to this page for a comprehensive history.

On Dekemurios 54, 29 NE, the Megastructural Construction Corporation announced the construction of twenty massive habitats in a massive ring around Nivenia Prime, each an actively supported spherical shell fifty thousand kilometers wide, with an Ultimate Terraforming Lightbulb 1.0™ at full power at the center, and 125 billion square kilometers of area (planned to be covered in dense suburbs) inside over ten thousand McKendree cylinders[1], by Neochios 40, 35 NE. Interestingly, as Nivenia Prime had so much waste heat being radiated at temperatures over 2000 K, the spheres used a massive ring around the planet covered in photovoltaic panels to power the lightbulbs, not the typical nuclear fusion reactors (although the reactors still made for excellent backup power sources.
