A planet of unparalleled beauty, a melting pot of understanding and wisdom. It's sobriquet, the "cultural capital of Cyrannus" is well earned. Indeed, if Orbispira is the heart of the galaxy, Capricaerón is the soul.

- V. Jarvar, Encyclopædia Cyrannica, "Planets of the Core Worlds"

Capricaerón, known as Wináiml to the ancient Oikoumene, is a temperate planet in the Core Worlds of the Cyrannus Galaxy. The planet is perhaps best known as the world upon which the Libertus evolved, a species which later went on to define the Cyrannus Galaxy as its dominant species. Capricaerón is a lush, bountiful and pristine planet marked as the undisputed capital of the Twelve Worlds as well as the cultural heartland of the entire Cyrannus Galaxy.

The history of the planet is complex. During the early years of space-faring Libertus, the planet was a sovereign state under a democratic government which often warred with rival planets amongst the Twelve Worlds, most notably Taurophon. However, upon the unification of the worlds in 1536 BNE, the planet became the capital of the Capricorn Sector Alliance, a member state of the Federation of United Worlds, which was ultimately reformed into the United Republic of Cyrannus in 53 BNE, with Capricaerón being considered one of the most important worlds of the new democratic superpower.

After the Great Cyrannus War, the planet was generally unsupportive of the Galactic Empire of Cyrannus, with the planet's senator being a thorn in the side of Imperial forces. As such, the majority of the planet's population was strongly sympathetic to the New Cyrannian Republic, ultimately leading to the planet joining the Republic after the Cyrandia Resistance broke the back of the Imperial occupation force. When Mou'Cyran was destroyed by the Empire at the beginning of the Second Great Cyrannus War, Capricaerón was chosen as the interim capital of the New Republic. Two years later, the planet fell to the Empire, and was placed under the control of a puppet government led by Zare'Anne. The planet was liberated by Apollo's forces in 20 NE, although Capricae City was destroyed in the conflict. In the decades after the end of the war, the planet remained an important player in Gigaquadrantic diplomacy, with the rebuilt city Capricae City serving as the capital of the Alliance of Cyrandian Galaxies.

Though most of the planet consists of beautiful, untouched grasslands, forests and glistening seas, the planet is perhaps best known for the cosmopolitan cities which dot the surface, including the planetary capital Capricaerón City, a centre of science, the arts, culture and learning. Capricaerón is the homeworld of many of the most important figures in galactic history, such as President Apollo, Fleur Inviere and Helo Roslia.

History[]

Early History[]

LibertusFlyer

Early Libertus often made use of pterosaurs as mounts.

A lush and bountiful planet, Capricaerón and the system it inhabits was formed over 3.9 billion years ago, beginning the long and slow development toward a life-sustaining world. Over seventy million years ago, a mass extinction brought about the impact of a large comet prevented the diversification of mammalian lifeforms, allowing saurian lifeforms to become the dominant group of animals on the planet. From these humble origins arose many different species of saurian, ranging from massive sauropods and deadly theropods.

From the latter, the earliest ancestors of the Libertus evolved, with modern examples of the species first appearing just under a million years before the rise of the Galactic Empire of Cyrannus. The early Libertus themselves evolved as the apex predators of their continent using their swift and agile nature as well as their high degree of intelligence to hunt and kill prey. Equipped with razor-sharp teeth, a killing claw on each foot and a top speed of up to seventy kilometres per hour at full sprint, these early Libertus were almost perfectly evolved for hunting and killing. Modern paleontologists believe that early Libertus lived and operated in packs, which eventually became more and more advanced as the Libertus continued to evolve.

Upon reaching the stage during which tribal structures began appearing, Oikoumene life-preserving artificial intelligences catalogued the species and placed tribes on many different worlds throughout Cyrannus, including the planets which would ultimately be known as the Twelve Worlds, though also including other planets in the Core Worlds which would ultimately advance to form stellar governments such as the First Republic while Capricaerón remained to develop at a more natural pace.

Over time, packs became tribes and tribes became cities. When the Age of Technology arrived, the Libertus had relatively few conflicts between rival civilisations. However, a terrorist group managed to construct a nuclear device and used it against the city Delphi in opposition to the growing levels of political unification between the planet's superpowers. However, this act of savagery ultimately resulted in an escalation of political unification which occurred at a much quicker pace than in other civilised species despite the high levels of cultural differences that existed between different Libertus factions. Over the next century, these early Capricaerónians began to expand into space where they encountered the independent Libertus states of Twelve Worlds.

As a spacefaring power, Capricaerón interacted with the other Twelve Worlds in both peace and war, ultimately usurping the place of Virgon as the most important planet in the system, leading the way to the unification of the worlds under the Republic of the Twelve Worlds and later, the Capricorn Sector Alliance. Interstellar travel ultimately led to the planet becoming a member world in the Federation of United Worlds, ultimately rising to become the Federation's second most important world, after the galactic capital Orbispira.

United Republic and Imperial Eras[]

Fellow people of Cyrannus, the Confederacy has launched a devastating attack on my homeworld of Capricaerón in the hope of shattering our resolve. But I will tell you this, Capricaerón will not fall and neither will the ideals of our Republic. We will repel the invaders and bring the planet back into our fold.

- Apollo during the Battle of Capricaerón.

Capricaerón was attacked many times in its long history, mostly during the Intercolonial Wars, however it was also attacked by small nuclear weapons during the opening stages of the Trucinex War. Luckily, these weapons left little radiation, and the planet quickly recovered. The planet also came under attack by the Imperial Alliance, in one of the longest and bloodiest battles in the Second Galactic War, second only to the Battle of the Rambo Capital. General Zillum, a Mortalitas Imperial attacked the colony with a huge fleet, of both Mortalitas and Imperial ships, however the timely aid of Captain Rambam and many CSA captains won the battle.

The Cognatus also invaded Capricaerón, however, little damage was done to the planet, with the exception of the city of Oldale, which was completely destroyed, but rebuilt at the end of the war. During the fourth month of the Great Cyrannus War, the Confederacy launched a daring attack on Capricaerón. The battle was long and arduous, and many casualties occurred on both sides. However the ingenuity of Fleet Admiral Cretacea won the day. During the battle, he protected the president, Senator Inviá and Magalen and Senator Lord Ram'Lendilia of Rambo Nation from the assualts of the famed General Zillum. Luckily, he protected the important individuals and destroyed Zillum's ship in the process. The scourge of the Cyrandia Alliance was finally slain and Capricaerón quickly returned to normal.

When the Galactic Empire of Cyrannus was formed, the people of Capricaerón were shocked that one of their own, Apollo would be willing to betray the ideals of freedom. When Mandator Atorikó arrived on Capricaerón, he was welcomed by his people, despite the fact that the Imperial Senator, Raen Magalen was a notable Republic sympathiser. Unbeknown to the general public, the Mornûnendur, Ekrillium located an ancient wormhole device that would grant the Empire a secret "backdoor" into the Quadrant Galaxies on Capricaerón. Showing his master Tyrómairon the portal, the Dark Lord gave the order to Zillum to enter the portal, and to bring the Quadrants to their knees. Eventually, Zillum's fleet was successful in conquering Rambo Nation and bringing it under Imperial control. Meanwhile, people on Capricaerón went about their daily lives, without a notion of the role their world played. When the third year of Imperial rule began, the Republic Remnant was captured and absorbed into the Empire, while Apollo and his family were allowed to go free. Apollo's family were soon delivered back to Capricaerón, where Gianne Inviá was assassinated by a bounty hunter.

Afterwards, Apollo and his children left to live in Rambo Nation, during which time he had a hand in the formation of the New Cyrannian Republic. With a strong tradition of democracy on Capricaerón, most of the planet supported this new government over the Empire leading to tensions in the Twelve Worlds. These tensions erupted during the New Cyrandia Wars, when Republic sympathisers in the Cyrandia Resistance launched an attack on the planet aiming to liberate it from Imperial rule. The large rebel flotilla was able to hold Capricaerón City hostage while the Imperials struggled to react in time to the incursion, which they initially suspected of being orchestrated by the Cyrannian Imperial State. Ultimately however, a deal was struck between the Empire and the New Republic governments during the final stages of the conflict, ensuring Capricaerón membership in the Republic.

Though many of Capricaerón's cities were left in ruins by the devastating conflict, the newly installed Republic leadership began to rebuild Capricaerón's infrastructure in preparation for the planet's formal elevation to Republic membership. Several weeks later, the planet officially joined the Republic in a lavish ceremony attended by many of the most notable figures in the Republic including Apollo, who established his official office in the Presidential Pyramid in Capricae City. When Apollo stepped down from the position of Proconsul in 08 NE, he was elected to represent Capricaerón in his old position as Senator to the Congress of the New Republic.

Second Great Cyrannus War[]

An insurgency has been growing on the streets of the Twelve Worlds, striking at the Imperials whenever and wherever possible, and while reprisals are quick and merciless, I believe any and all acts of defiance are important for morale... for sanity.

- Senator Raen Magalen, during the Occupation of Capricaerón

Almost ten years after the Four Systems joined the New Republic, the galaxy slid back into open warfare, when the Empire utilised the destructive power of the Cyrannic Imperial Battlestation to destroy the Mou'Cyran system. With most of the Republic government dead or incapacitated, the presidency fell to Senator Apollo, who moved the capital to Capricaerón, where he began the difficult process of holding the Republic together, at a time when it faced almost certain collapse. Early in the Second Great Cyrannus War, the planet was the site of the Republic Day Attacks, which resulted in the deaths of many surviving senators.

SGCW The Wheel Turns 2

A massive battle erupts in Capricaerón's orbit.

Two years after the beginning of the conflict, Capricaerón, and the rest of the Twelve Worlds, came under heavy Imperial assault. Though the planet's defenders fought bravely to defend the Republic's new capital against the Empire's legions, it was only through the quick installation of a heavy planetary shield which prevented the planet from being ravaged by Imperial bombardment. However, the combined firepower of the Imperial fleet ultimately weakened the shield to cover only Capricae City, and later, the Presidential Pyramid in the city. Across the planet, Republic defenders fought against the Empire for over a week, largely ignoring the signing of the P'ax Cyrannica Concordat by the Imperial-appointed President Zare'Anne, who was placed in command of the Republic upon president Apollo's escape from the capital.

In the aftermath of the battle, Capricaerón was placed under martial law, as the official capital of Occupied Republic Space. Nevertheless, when word reached the ears of the planet's population that Apollo had survived, and was leading a New Republic Remnant, most eagerly awaited the day of his return.

SGCW Battle of Capricaerón

The Republic fights to liberate Capricaerón.

By Dekemurios 17 NE, Capricaerón was firmly under the boot of the Imperial occupation, resulting in an underground resistance movement emerging under the leadership of Raen Magalen, Arasah Nui, Caranye Valaeris and Rhavor Aldorón. These insurgents ultimately emerged from the shadows when Apollo's forces finally arrived to liberate the Twelve Worlds in 20 NE. In the heavy fighting which followed, the Republic quickly captured much of the planet's surface, aided largely by widespread popular support for the rebels. In the capital itself, President Zare'Anne was killed when he attempted to fire upon the Aldárae sentinel Kara Inviá, dying almost simultaneously to the defeat of Grand Admiral Scaeva in orbit.

With the liberation of Capricaerón, Apollo declared the restoration of the New Republic as an independent galactic government, and soon set about planning for a final battle on the galactic capital Orbispira. Before such plans could be put into motion however, the insidious Basileus admiral Irenwen arrived in orbit, and devastated Capricae City with her flagship's cannons, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of citizens and the utter destruction of the city. Capricaerón was swiftly secured in the aftermath of the battle, with reconstruction on Capricae City beginning without delay.

New Republic Era[]

Following the Great Battle of Orbispira, an ambitious New Republic project to rebuild Capricae City was initiated, and ultimately resulted in the city's reconstruction and resettlement in 28 NE. This coincided with the re-establishment of the Capricorn Sector Alliance as a federated state within the New Republic, with Capricae City serving once more as its capital. In the decades which followed the conclusion of the Second Great War, Capricaerón continued to prosper as a Gigaquadrantic centre of interstellar diplomacy, and was chosen as the capital of the Alliance of Cyrandian Galaxies upon its formation in 46 NE.

CapricaerónMap01

A map of Capricaerón's continents, oceans, regions and major cities.

Capricaerón is located in the quadruple star system of Calithilaen, orbiting around Heran Alpha, a yellow dwarf located approximately 1 AU away. The three other stars of the Four Systems can often be seen in the skies over Capricaerón, though due to their relative distances away, the planet retains a typical day-night cycle. Capricaerón shares an orbit with Piconé, an aquatic world home to the Piconéi Libertus, with the two planets orbiting a common barycenter every 30 days. The planet is also orbited by a small moon, Lunasa, believed to have been an asteroid caught in the gravity of the twin worlds.

Capricaerón has a diameter of 12,740 kilometres, with seventy nine percent of the planet's surface consisting of water, mostly in the vast Transcapricaer Ocean, which covers much of the planet. The planet is currently in the midst of a relatively warm geologic period, characterised by high sea levels, and increased oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, with the mean surface temperature being 18 °C. As such, the planet lacks polar ice caps and glaciation occurs only in high mountain ranges, which dominate the central regions of all five continents, though snow elsewhere falls beyond the topics during the winter months.

Geography[]

Capricaerón has four main landmasses, with five commonly accepted continents. The largest landmass consists of the southern continent of Sothonian, which is connected to the smaller continent of Tethyian, though the two are in the process of a continental breakup. The two continents are culturally considered separate, both home to divergent cultures which were isolated from one another in ancient times by the difficult-to-navigate rift valley on the boundaries, north of the Sothonian city of Kemenore. Sothonian itself has a sparsely populated interior, though large coastal cities such as Novosi profitted greatly from trade with the Oenóen city of Delphi, across the Laramidian Ocean. Beyond the cities, much of the continent consists of untouched wildnerness, home to some of the planet's famed megafauna.

Capricaerón and Picone

Tethyian, in contrast, was long considered to be the wealthiest region on Capricaerón, dominating the globe for much of the planet's pre-spacefaring era. Grand old cities such as Alala and Demeterón became masters of rich city states which influence which spread across the Tethyian Seaway to Oenóen, and across the Sea of Oldale to Valaar. The people of Tethyian tend toward traditionalism to a greater degree than most Capricaerónians, a largely vestigial remnant of their colonial mastery over the seas. However, with the dawn of the space age, and the emergence of Republic of Western Oenóen as a forceful proponent of planetary unification, Tethyian became supporters of United Capricaerón on the interstellar stage.

Of the west coast of Tethyian, beyond the Sea of Oldale, lies the bountiful island continent of Valaar, often regarded as the planet's most beautiful region. Valaar is home to a single city, Tedlin, located in a lagoon where multiple canals and waterways to the Sea of Oldale meet. Tedlin straddles a hundred islands in the lagoon, and is largely untouched by the modern world. However, the people of the city are closely connected with the modern galactic community, though see fit to retain the grandeur of the old ways.

Like Sothonian, the northern continent of Nortaas is sparsely populated, with the exception of the great cities of Lauropolis and Libraport, on the southern coast, and the mountain city of Northandaléan, close to the planet's north pole. Largely isolated from the other continents, Nortaas is home to many lifeforms with no evolutionary cousins elsewhere on the planet, home to unusual scansoriopterygids and sauropods, the wonder of more than a few young Libertus children.

CapricaerónVistaSpaceEngine

Undoubtedly, the central continent of Oenóen dominates Capricaerónian politics, culture and recent history. An island continent bordered by the Transcapricaer Ocean to the north, the Valaari Sea to the east, the Laramidian Ocean to the south and the Tethyian Seaway to the west, Oenóen has long been the confluence of Capricaerónian civilisations. In the past, the continent was colonised extensively by the Tethyian citystates, before the city of Targvalopolos launched a rebellion which led to the formation of the Republic of Western Oenóen, based in the newly constructed capital city of Capricaepolis, on the fertile coast of the Bay of Capricae.

Capricaepolis itself was regarded as one of the Cyrannus Galaxy's grandest metropolis, serving as the capital of the United Worlds of Calithilaen, the Capricorn Sector Alliance, and the New Cyrannian Republic. However, it was not the only famous city on Oenóen, which is home to the bulk of the planet's population. Though devastated by a nuclear attack during the Unification War, Delphi, due east of Capricaepolis, was re-constructed as a beacon of wealth and a hub of eastern hemispheric trade. While largely dominated by vast cities, Oenóen has pristine wilderness, such as the famed Blénon Mountains, the Golden Marsh and the Creeks—a region in the Westlands home to tyrannovenator and many other species of giant dinosaur.

Main article: Fiction:Capricae City

Capricae City is the capital and largest city on Capricaerón as well as one of the Cyrannus Galaxy's most important cultural and political nerve centres. The city was often seen as the cultural heart of Cyrannus, and though it does not hold the political weight of Orbispira or Mou'Cyran, it was still seen as one of the galaxy's most important metropolitan areas.

Capricae City is a thriving metropolis and a home of entertainment, industry and trade from across known space, all nestled in a small archipelago in the Bay of Capricaé, an inlet of the Tethyian Seaway, though in recent centuries the city expanded beyond Old Capricaé further into the mainland, which in turn is divided into several waterways and rivers. The city itself is split into three boroughs, Old Capricaé, Republic Island and Capricaé Hills. Old Capricáe is a more traditional area of the city split into several dozen islands separated by narrow rivers and streams linked by pedestrian bridges, making it a famous tourist attraction across the Gigaquadrant with tourists being drawn to the district's beauty and architecture.

Fauna[]

Capricaerón is famed across the Gigaquadrant for its biodiversity, with wildlife found in a plethora of ecosystems across the planet, from the fringes of Nortaas, to the lush rainforests of Oenòen and beneath the Pancapricaer Ocean. Reptiliians, particularly those of the archosaurian variety, dominate life on Capricaerón, with relatively few species of mammals and amphibians. The fossil record indicates that mammals were the dominant form of life on the planet before the Great Vanishing, a mass extinction event caused by a rogue asteroid, 49.6 million years ago, which resulted in the extinction of over ninety percent of life on the planet.

DinoAmbush

A lone tyrannovenator ambushes a flock of wyliei.

With the extinction of most species of mammals, reptilians began to spread across the globe, evolving from small lizard-like animals to huge lifeforms, the most impressive of which were mighty draconic beasts, with massive wings and with the ability to breath fire. These majestic beasts dominated the planet until they too became extinct 10.8 million years ago. In their place, saurian creatures of great variety came to the fore, including the wily dromeosaurids, which gave rise to the Libertus, a species which would come to dominate Cyrannus. Alongside the Libertus include predators such as tyrannovenator, a feared hunter unrivalled on the planet, while the mighty dreadnoughtosaurus are among the largest land animals in the Core Worlds. Beneath the waves of Capricaerón's many oceans, stalk massive marine reptiles such as mosapleurodon, the massive jaws of which have spelled the end of more than one unfortunate Libertus seaman. Capricaerón's ecosystems were carefully tended to by the Oikoumene in ages past, and it is believed that in addition to planting the Libertus on other worlds across the galaxy, they seeded Capricaerónan life across Cyrannus, perhaps explaining the predominance of saurian beings in the galaxy.

Trivia[]

  • Capricaerón was originally known as Capricorn, which was changed to Caprica, the name of the primary planet in Battlestar Galactica. In order to add a bit more originality, it was changed to Capricus and later Capricaerón.
  • Still, it remains inspired by Caprica, though it is also based in part on Alderaan and Earth during the Late Cretaceous Period.
