We need to make a plan for how to organize the wiki (i'm specifically thinking of the fan-created stuff). So far we have moved stuff into the content namespace. This is a working, but not perfect solution. What I propose is making several namespaces for the different types of creations. I.e:

  • Concept - for stuff that is not actually created in-game. (We could use [[Concept:Überauto (Vehicle)]] and simmilar to differenciate the types.
  • Creature
  • Building
  • Vehicle
  • Civilizaton (?) - for more than one type (maybe another name?)

This way people who are looking for a race can easily find one, and not have to look through all the other kinds of content. Now, we have about a month before the game is released and a lot more creations will be uploaded. If we want to do a change such as this, now is the time.

Comments? Ideas? I'm not saying my idea is the best. If you feel you have a better idea, tell us about it here. Osetc 22:09, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

If you want, I can add some stuff to MediaWiki:Newarticletext that will have preloaded templates/namespaces for new articles. E.g. see SmashWiki's or Zeldapedia's MediaWiki:Newarticletext page. Those boxes could be helpful in changing the name of a user's article from "Article" to "Content:Article". Hopefully that makes sense..--Richard 16:46, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

After a little thinking i've changed my mind a little. Two namespaces could be sufficent: content and concept. The concept namespace would be for stuff not actually created in-game, whilst the content space would be reserved for stuff created (that people cuould downlad and put in their game). Type of concept/creation coul be in paranthesis behind the name. Osetc 03:50, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Fact, Fiction and Fan stuff[]

Moved from Talk:SporeWiki

Wikis - as far as I understood it, contain facts. This wiki seems populated with speculation about the game, and a number of fantasy items people would like to create when they get the game. I am just a humble newbie at Wiki-stuff, but it seems to me this Wiki needs to (re-)cataloge pages based on what is Facts (which really have to wait until the game is out, but could start with facts of the Creature Creator), what is Fantasy and Fan items (people who feel the game is great and just want to show that, in particular their creature)? In particular all speculation about the comming game (good guesses based on watching developer demos) can be "put to one side" now, this close to the release. MSquare 21:48, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

I've been thinking a lot about organizing content, and my conclusion is that
  • only editorial content (tips, explanations, walkthroughs, etc.) should be in the main namespace.
  • Content-content (stuff that people had made in-game, that can be downloaded and put into other people's games) should be in the content namespace.
  • fanon (backstories and other fiction) should be kept on a separate wiki, maintained by the fanonists themselves and the sporewiki sysops.
If someone wanted to create fanon based on their content, they could make a content page on this wiki, and simply link to the fanon page on the fanon wiki.
This would mean a lot of work for us now to move the stuff, but when it is done, the wiki would be much easier to manage. Osetc 22:09, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
"a humble newbie at Wiki-stuff" ... "namespace"? (I know of the word in other contexts, but unsure how that exactly applies/works in a wiki). Otherwise I like the split-up as outlined. If given some outline how to do it, I can probably contribute to the a lot of work for us. MSquare 17:13, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Please sign at the end of your post. A namespace is the prefix in a pagename. This page is in the "Forum" namespace. User:MSquare is in the "user" namespace. Content:Introi is in the content namespace. Spore is in the main (no prefix) namespace. Oh and the fanon wiki is live, if anyone is interested in taking a look. Osetc 17:29, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
We've discussed in IRC a proposal that fictional content should be moved from the (poorly named) Spore Fanon wiki back into the Spore wiki, with content either going into a Fiction: namespace or a sub-page of the author's user-space.

Order of sourcing information[]

A brief discussion in IRC decided that sources of information should be taken in the following order:

  1. In-game information
  2. Official website(s)
  3. Manuals

That is to say, if the official website contradicts in-game information (and said info isn't expected to be patched), the official website should be ignored in favour of the game. Similarly, if the manual contradicts either in-game information or an official website, the manual is to be ignored. SignpostMarv 22:49, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
