SporeMouth

Mouths are a class of creature parts and an essential part to any creature as they are the only way that one is capable of consuming food, necessary for survival. Thus, this is the only part that must be placed on a creature and without which the creature can't be saved.

Overview[]

There are many mouths to choose from, including pincers, suckers, sharp-toothed mouths, and plain old human-like lips. Each mouth has a different attribute that will affect the stats of your creature. A sharp-toothed mouth, for example, may give your creature 5 points to its biting ability. The type of mouth also affects whether your creature's diet. Multiple mouths can be placed on a single creature; creatures with both a carnivorous mouth and an herbivorous mouth become omnivorous.

Carnivorous mouths feature higher-level bite and are most suited for a hostile playstyle, while herbivorous mouths are better for socializing thanks to their high-level sing abilities. Omnivorous mouths are more balanced and varied, and allow eating any kind of food, at the cost of not offering the charge ability.

Mouth parts[]

Mouths

All mouth parts in Core Spore

There are 54 mouths available across the base game and all official expansions: 22 omnivorous mouths, 16 carnivorous and 16 herbivorous.

All mouths provide a mating call and at least Bite 1 and Sing 1, with the exception of the bot mouths which have no sing ability.

Core Spore Mouths[]

There are 16 omnivorous mouths, 12 carnivorous mouths and 12 herbivorous mouths in Core Spore.

Cell Mouths[]

CellMouths

The Cell mouths. Columns 2, 3 and 4 possess the hidden parts that can't be accessed without mods.

These mouths are exclusive to the Cell Creator and Early Creature Creator. There are only 3 of these mouth parts available in the base Spore game: Filter Mouth, Jaw, and Proboscis, and all of them have the same voice as the "Insect" row of mouths in the Creature Creator. Both Filter Mouth and Jaw mouth parts are available when starting out in the Cell Stage, but Proboscis must be earned by killing a cell possessing it.

With access to the expanded unreleased Cell Creator, the player can add over 12 mouth parts to the cell that they create. Although the player can save their cell, they cannot play or edit them in the base game.

Voices[]

All mouths have their own voices which determine the way your creature sounds.

  • Reptile mouths will make deep growling noises. When fleeing, they make a high-pitched screaming sound. Their mating calls differ between the standalone Spore Creature Creator and the full Spore game. In the Creature Creator, their mating call consists of four barks, but in the actual Spore game, they produce seven.
  • Insect mouths will make chirps and clicks, like that of a cricket. The mating call is also different from the Creature Creator than in the full Spore game; in the Creature Creator, the mouths made high pitched cricket chirps, but in the full game, their mating call is actually a sped-up version of the Willosaur mating call from GDC 2005.
  • Fish mouths will make clicks and squeaks, like that of a beluga whale or dolphin. Their mating call also consists of various dolphin squeaks, despite the fact that the Fish mouths resemble a barracuda or shark's mouth.
  • Bird of prey mouths will make squawks and honks, like that of a parrot. Their mating calls are that of a peacock. Probably as a reference to talking parrots, you can hear creatures with any bird of prey beak say words such as "hello" and even "buenos dias" (Spanish for "good morning") in a stereotypical squeaky parrot's voice.
  • Primate mouths will make ooks and squeals, like that of a chimpanzee. Like Reptile and Worm mouths, their mating calls differ from the Creature Creator and the full Spore game. In the Creature Creator, their mating call consists of growling, whereas in the full Spore game it resembles that of a gibbon.
  • Amphibian mouths will make high pitched croaks and clicks, like that of a treefrog or bullfrog. Their mating call consists of various squeaks. On several occasions, Amphibian mouths will make dolphin-like sounds.
  • Worm mouths make deep croaks and roars, somewhat like seals or sea lions. If this type of mouth is at sing level 2, 3, 4, or 5 (only by combining this type of mouth with mouths that have high-level sing, as they do not give Sing higher than level 1 by themself), they will make bellowing cries, like that of an elephant. Their mating calls differ from the Creature Creator and the full Spore game. In the Creature Creator, their mating call consists of various gurgling sounds, but in the full game, it is a high-pitched shriek, close to that of a bugling bull elk.
  • Mammalian mouths will make brays and honks, like that of a donkey. Their mating calls are a long, howling sound somewhat like a cow or wolf.
  • Swine mouths will make oinks and squeals, like that of a boar. Their mating calls consist of snorting or howling.
  • Bird mouths will make chirps and birdsong, like that of any songbird. Their mating calls consist of soft singing, closely resembling a Common Loon.

Mouths on the same row will give creatures voices that are the same. Modifying the mouth's size will affect the creature's voice, ranging from high pitches to low pitched. For example, a reptile mouth at the smallest size will make the creature flee making an "EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" sound. If it is the largest size it will say "AAAAAAAAH!". However, the mouth's shape has no effect on voice.

In Galactic Adventures, the mouth a creature has will affect its language if it is intelligent. If a creature has a mouth with lips (especially creepy and cute and bot mouths), it will speak in a gruff male voice, however, if it has insect or worm mouthparts (or cell mouths), the creature speaks in a rasping language consisting of clicks. The beaked mouths also sound different. Creatures with beaks speak with a high-pitched language consisting of squawks. The captain the player is using always has the gruff male voice though, unless it's a tribal creature with worm, insect or beaked mouth.

Trivia[]

  • The icon for the mouth part resembles the Slagjawed mouth part.
  • The Skexybeast mouth is most likely a reference to the Skeksis from The Dark Crystal. It may also stand as a euphemism for "Sexy Beast".
  • The Shortensnout mouth's name may be a play on the term "short and stout" from the "I'm a little teapot" song.
  • The Ungulot mouth's name is a play on the term "ungulate".
  • The Ruminanteater mouth's name is a play on the terms "anteater" and "ruminant".
  • The Whalephant mouth's name is a portmanteau of "whale" and "elephant", although the part does not resemble either of those animals.
  • The cell mouths (and all cell parts) have the most plain, straightforward names, those being "Filter Mouth", "Jaw", and "Proboscis", all of which simply describe the type of mouth. All other mouth names are either puns, portmanteaus, made-up words, or other types of less straightforward names.
  • The bird of prey mouths were originally intended to be carnivorous, but were switched to omnivorous at some point in Spore's development.
  • The insect mouths were originally intended to be omnivorous, but were switched to carnivorous at some point in Spore's development.
  • If the game is hacked to force the game to save and play creatures with no mouths, the player will be incapable of more than just eating, biting, calling and singing; they also won't be able to collect bone piles, limiting the amount of parts one can get.
  • The game has data files labeled for "Starvivores", to prevent the game from crashing when mouthless creatures are loaded.
  • In the Spore Creature Creator game, some mouths have their mouth opened.
  • Dee Bradley Baker provides the vocal effects for most if not all mouths. [1]
  • In Spore Hero, different mouths create different musical note shapes during the singing minigame. Insect mouths' musical notes are shaped like scorpion tails, swine mouths' musical notes have pig-like nostrils, bird of prey mouths' musical notes have beaks, songbird mouths' musical notes have wings, worm mouths' musical notes are shaped like toothy jaws, reptile mouths' musical notes are spiky, amphibian mouths' musical notes have a dorsal fin and a long thin fish tail, fish mouths' musical notes lack a dorsal fin and instead have a fin on the bottom of the note along with a short thick fish tail, primate mouths' musical notes are plain and round, mammalian mouths' musical notes look like a donkey's tail sticking straight up, cute herbivore mouths' musical notes look like paint splatters, goofy omnivore mouths' musical notes look blocky, and creepy carnivore mouths' musical notes look like saw blades/curved spiky fur.
