Sometimes I'll hear someone tell me that they think the Federation glorifies its military too much. Perhaps so, but I think that it would be much worse not to properly honor our military's role in protecting our livelihoods and defending our sovereignty.

- Tybusen High Councillor David Restram

The Federation Combined Armed Services (FCAS) comprises the armed forces of the TIAF and serves as the basis for the Federation's military power. Officially, the military is divided into the Assault Armada, the Domestic Defense, and the Special Forces. All three branches are overseen by the General Ministry of Defense, an executive department of the federal civilian government headed by the Minister of Defense, who operates with the authority of the Prime Minister. While the Prime Minister maintains civilian control of the military as its Commander-in-Chief, in practice the military is given considerable autonomy to conduct its own affairs so long as the military does not undermine the authority of the civilian government.

Beginning from the common-defense initiative specified in the Federation Constitution, the FCAS grew from a ragtag hodgepodge of expendable equipment and personnel from state militaries into a highly effective professional force that supplanted and replaced the individual state militaries as the primary military and security force of the Federation. Today the FCAS is also an important economic and cultural fixture for the Federation, with the military-industrial complex being a key economic engine for numerous Federation worlds and the proud history of the FCAS being well-ingrained in the modern Federation cultural fabric. With an estimated 30 trillion service members in its payroll, the military is also a significant provider of employment and other social services.

As the largest and most well-supplied military force within the Bunsen Galaxy, as well as a competitive military force in the wider First Gigaquadrant, the FCAS is an undoubtedly important contributor to the Federation's current status as a Bunsen superpower and a Gigaquadrantic great power.

History[]

Genesis Age[]

The origins of the military date back to the signing of the TIAF Constitution, in which a TIAF military would be organized for the security and stability of the nation. Unfortunately, due to the numerous political divisions of the era, an effective federal military could not be established, with most member nations instead using their own militia. Some of the nations committed to TIAF unity pooled their militia to form the first truly federal military, but during this period, the military was for the most part dependent on the cooperation of member militias and not the federal military.

At this time period, the only federal military organization was the Space Navy, composed mostly of the state militias of some members in Tyrusan and Kylessa. Some of the less-cooperative members did not participate in the Space Navy program, most notably the Popper, Jigoku, and Hoggiraptor, and even some of the loyal members refused to join, including the Kirgle, Fernikki, and Sir Beakenstein.

Golden Age[]

With the Federation becoming more and more unified, the military increased in power and effectiveness as members contributed their technologies and tactics. The military became a much more cohesive single organization compared to the division during the Genesis Era. By the time the Erion Wars rolled around, the military was looking very impressive, finishing off the Erion rebels quite nicely. A surge in TIAF military technology during the Era of Prosperity gave the TIAF an important edge, and in the Bunsen War, the TIAF gained its first military victory over another major galactic power, the Levisala. The advent of Intergalactic Contact allowed for military technologies and tactics from the rest of the First Gigaquadrant to begin flowing into the TIAF military.

During the Golden Age, the military began to resemble its current form, with the original Space Navy being partitioned into the Assault Armada, Space Navy, and Domestic Defense. The Assault Armada was intended as the main mobile force of the TIAF, the Space Navy as a supplementary fleet to the AA, and the Domestic Defense as the defensive fleets of the TIAF.

Days of Darkness[]

The military stayed intact during the Civil War, though somewhat weakened by the loss of units that were loyal to the Rebels. The military fought valiantly during the TIAF Civil War and won many key battles, but were unfortunately unable to defend Tropicana from Rebel occupation. During the early days of the Redemption, the military was temporarily disbanded in the confusion, but soon regrouped to participate in the Defense of the Star Bridge. It was during this period that the military began to grow to an incredible size, which is attributed to a strong surge of nationalism in the TIAF following the devastating defeat in the Civil War. The military struck back hard to finish the War of Redemption in under 4 SY (one Earth Standard Year) and decisively demonstrated the TIAF's regained dominance in Bunsen.

In the Days of Darkness, the reformation of the military led to the Assault Armada and Domestic Defense being designated as the two main branches governed by the Ministry of Defense. The Space Navy still existed but at this point was being almost completely overtaken by the AA and DD (though the Space Navy experienced a brief revival during the War of Redemption). Also, after the Xanthrus Cold War, the Special Forces Organization was introduced, though would still be in infancy at the end of the Days of Darkness.

Intergalactic Age[]

The Intergalactic Age was a bright time for the TIAF military, with massive technology jumps propelling the military into a competitive position with the other Tier 2 nations of the era. Wars against the Vartekians and Moxix Breek served as testing grounds for the new strength of the TIAF military, and the War of Wental and Second Bunsen War would be the military's latest trials against their active rivals in the Gigaquadrant. Significant victories in all four wars propelled the military to immense apparent dominance among the Federation's peers.

The Space Navy was done away with all together in the Intergalactic Age, with its responsibilities being divided up between the Assault Armada and Domestic Defense. The Special Forces Organization was also fully integrated as the military's go-to for special operations, being fully put under the administration of the Ministry of Defense. In addition, the recruiting and promotion system was reformed, allowing for the rise of newer officers in the system. Further reforms to the military were pushed, but they would not be implemented until later.

Post-Apocalypse Age[]

The Post-Apocalypse Age was a great age of advancement for the TIAF as a whole, and the military was included. Gaining many new powerful military and energy technologies, the military reached an unprecedented level of efficiency and lethality. The military assisted the Arturnias alongside most of Bunsen's residents against the threat of the Veidatras, and in the revival of the Second Bunsen War following the Divine Era, the military very quickly put an end to the Revolution's ambitions and concluded the Second Bunsen War once and for all.

The military did not change much in organization during the Post-Apocalypse Age, only changing some regulations for the evolving military technologies as well as starting to promote Essence training for a wider range of officers. Originally, the SFO covered Essence users as special forces, but Arturnias teachings allowed a larger portion of the TIAF to learn about Essence usage. The AA and DD at this time began incorporating Essence users into select battalions.

Twilight Age[]

The Armada, with new organization coming from the conclusion of the Post-Apocalypse Age, has helped test the waters of the new political world from after the Annihilation. It has managed to show dominance against the Draconid Imperium during the War of the Commonwealth before finally being defeated by the forces of the soon-to-be Andromeda Galactic Commonwealth. As the TIAF continues to expand in this era, the military has grown larger and more widespread as a result, as the TIAF has grown wary of others in this chaotic era.

The rest of the reforms proposed during the Intergalactic Age were implemented at the beginning of the Twilight Age, resulting in a long-needed overhaul of the Armada and Defense's organization systems. These overhauls resulted in the modern format of the Armada and Defense. The SFO was not heavily affected by these changes, though it began to form new sub-organizations to further keep track of the growing number of special ops corps.

Departments of the Military[]

Assault Armada[]

The Assault Armada functions as the TIAF's main mobile force, and must be able to move across space quickly as quick response fleets or as strike fleets. Assault Armada ships are designed for power, agility, and resilience, though the Armada has a great variety of ships that do not always come up to par with those standards. The main fighting force in TIAF wars, the Assault Armada is the most prominent and prestigious branch of the military in the eyes of the citizens. While many others' ambitions lie in the other two branches of the military (otherwise, there wouldn't be anyone running those), Assault Armada officers are held with the highest regard.

The Assault Armada is managed by the Armada Commander, who is currently (and will be for the forseeable future) James Lorrelas. Fleets in the Armada are managed by Admirals, of which there are currently fifty. Each fleet varies in its philosophy and tactics based on its Admiral, but all of them fight for the common cause of TIAF interests.

Special Forces Organization[]

A relatively secret branch of the military, it is well-known by the public, but their purposes are only known by high-rank commanding officers in the Armada and Defense, and a multitude of prominent politicians. They are designed to carry out extremely specialized operations; such as espionage, sabotage, and assassinations; and require years of training to perfect their skills. Citizens are aware that the SFO handles "special" operations (it is in the name), though for the most part the organization's activities are kept under wraps (except for espionage, which almost every citizen seems to know is a SFO thing).

The Special Forces are overseen by the Operations Director (or simply Director), who is currently Ariana Lilly. The SFO is divided up into Operative Commissions, who all deal with a single special operative covered by the SFO each. These Commissions are in turn overseen by Operative Commissioners. The SFO shares a strong special bond with the Federal Intelligence Commission, mostly due to both parties' reliance on each other's labor or intelligence.

Domestic Defense[]

The Federation's specialty defense force, commonly called either the DD or simply the Defense. Compared to the traveling nature of the Armada, the Defense is mostly in charge of defending territories deemed to be securely within the fold of the Federation. Ships designed for the DD are designed for resilience and durability, allowing them to draw out fights and allow time for reinforcements to arrive if the DD hasn't already defeated an invader. Along with defense fleets, the Domestic Defense also manages automated or stationary defense installments, like planetary and city shielding, turrets, and ground-to-orbit weapons. The DD is sometimes said to be the overshadowed heroes of the Federation, since the DD are the ones defending TIAF territory in times of war while the AA is out invading enemy territories. DD officers are given the same amount of respect as AA officers within the military, though in society DD officers tend to have less prestige than AA officers.

The massive Domestic Defense is commanded by the Defense Commandant, who is currently Shawn Garnet. The DD's equivalent of AA Fleets, Corps, are commanded by Marshals. Corps are centered in military bases which define their "region", and lower divisions of the Corps are assigned to planets within the region, with bigger divisions going to important planets and small garrisons occupying minor planets. The region partitions are mostly determined by population concentration, though how a Corps is divided greatly varies from region to region (for example, there are many Corps in the dense Tyrusan Star Cluster, while the similarly-dense Anthalti Cluster gets far fewer Corps).

Corps have their region included in their title (the Tropicana-Tyrus Corps manage Tropicana, Tyrus, Pucutoras, and other minor surrounding planets), while the DD's ten mobile Corps use numbers as identifiers. There are two types of Corps, mobile and stationary; stationary Corps are assigned to a region and stay there, mobile Corps have to be able to quickly move into a region and provide defense. Mobile Corps become stationary Corps if the region they are occupying has settled, and stationary Corps can still be moved around if a fleet rearrangement is ordered. New mobile Corps are formed by pooling unassigned units into a new Corps unit (if they haven't already been assigned to an existing Corps).

Assault Armada Divisions[]

1st Fleet[]

  • Fleet Admiral - John Samenor
  • Vice Fleet Admiral - Robert Mermus

Consisting of the first six Regiments of the Armada, the 1st Fleet is the largest fleet division of the Armada. The 1st is respected across the Federation as one of the most effective and honorable military forces ever seen in TIAF history. The 1st is led by Lt. Commander John Samenor, as dictated by the Reorganization Act.

1st Regiment[]

  • Admiral - Robert Mermus
  • Vice Admiral - Robert Yates
  • Rear Admiral - Natalie Grey

The 1st Regiment is regarded as one of the best fighting forces in the entire Armada, being among the largest military divisions within the Armada and equipped with the latest in war technology.

The 1st Regiment was first established under the original Military Organization Act from 400 SY, as part of the Alpha Sector in the old organization system. It was the first official division of the military under the original Armada. With the Federal Asset Reorganization Act of 1090 SY, the 1st Regiment was reclassified as a member of the 1st Fleet.

The 1st Regiment is currently led by Admiral Robert Mermus of the Lustergan, who has led the 1st Regiment for almost its entire lifetime. Captain Lorrelas led the 1st Regiment in its early days, from 400 SY until the end of the Erion Wars, when Lorrelas was promoted to Commander to replace deceased Commander Roarke.

2nd Regiment[]

  • Admiral - Alexander Khoffman
  • Vice Admiral - Robert Demen
  • Rear Admiral - Samson Agron

The 2nd Regiment is a heavy-handed division of the 1st Fleet. They are often said to be in league with the 1st Regiment, though their pragmatic combat styles are said to make them a little less popular than the 1st Regiment.

The 2nd Regiment was the second established division under the original organization, and belonged to the Alpha Sector. With the Reorganization Act, the 2nd Regiment was sorted into the 1st Fleet, predictably.

The 2nd Regiment is currently led by infamous combat pragmatist Admiral Alexander Khoffman of the Wub, who has led the 2nd Regiment since its reorganization under the 1st Fleet. During its classification in the Alpha Sector, the 2nd Regiment was headed by General Gordon Wolff, who now heads the 1st Battallion in the 1st Regiment.

3rd Regiment[]

  • Admiral - Michelle Tanyan
  • Vice Admiral - Debra Persing
  • Rear Admiral - Frank Loshe

The 3rd Regiment is known as the lighter counterpart to Admiral Khoffman's "hard-line" 2nd Regiment. While they are certainly not the best in battle, the 3rd Regiment is known to treat its members well.

The 3rd Regiment, like the 1st and 2nd Regiments, was established under the original organization. Predictably, the 3rd Regiment was the third to be organized. The 3rd Regiment served under the Alpha Sector in the old organization. The 3rd Regiment was assigned to the 1st Fleet after the Reorganization Act.

The 3rd Regiment is currently led by the calm, friendly Admiral Michelle Tanyan of the Fernikki. She has led the 3rd Regiment since the Reorganization slotted it under the 1st Fleet. Before that, General Debra Persing led the 3rd Regiment, and now serves as its Vice Admiral.

4th Regiment[]

  • Admiral - John Samenor
  • Vice Admiral - Webster Lloyd
  • Rear Admiral - Otto Bremen

The 4th Regiment, though newer and less experienced than the rest of the 1st Fleet for the most part, is not to be underestimated. Like most of the other Regiments under the 1st Fleet, the 4th Regiment is renowned for its combat proficiency and its excellent treatment of its officers.

The 4th Regiment did not actually exist until some time into the First Bunsen War, first organized as the 6th Regiment, and was not sorted under any of the original six Sectors. During the Reorganization, it was renamed the 4th Regiment to prevent confusion with the 6th Regiment that had already been added to the 1st Fleet (previously the 5th Regiment), and in recognition of their contributions.

The 4th Regiment is currently and has always been led by Lieutenant Commander John Samenor of the Metedarl, who has helped bring the young Regiment to fame. Though it is not generally known what Samenor's motivation was in creating the 4th, most reason that he likely wanted to take a role closer to the actual soldiers on the battlefield, in an Admiral position. Due to his status as Lt. Commander, Samenor would not have had to forfeit his higher role, since apparently there was a certain clause in the original Military Organization Act that allowed the Lt. Commander and Commander to have their own specialty divisions (Lorrelas' divison would become the Main Strike Fleet).

5th Regiment[]

  • Admiral - Ariana Draccard
  • Vice Admiral - Gary Birch
  • Rear Admiral - Lyra Arilla

The 5th Regiment is often regarded as "first cousin to the 3rd", as its light-handed approach to war is extremely similar to that of Admiral Tanyan's 3rd Regiment. Many of their peers see the 3rd and 5th as friendly rivals for the title of "nicest Regiment in the Armada". They are also rivals with the 7th due to a personal rivalry between Admiral Draccard and Admiral Tzena of the 7th Regiment.

The 5th Regiment was originally the 4th Regiment, and was classified under the Beta Sector, the first Regiment to do so. It was the fourth division to be established. For the Reorganization Act, it was renamed the 5th to make room for Samenor's 4th Regiment, and was sorted into the 1st Fleet.

The 5th Regiment is currently led by the kind and compassionate Admiral Ariana Draccard of the Dragoozie. Her caring personality is in stark contrast to the 5th's pre-Reorganization commander, Admiral Khoffman, who led the 5th as Admiral of the Beta Sector. Admiral Khoffman left his post on the 5th to lead the 2nd Regiment, and Draccard was chosen by the 5th's top officers to be their next Admiral.

6th Regiment[]

  • Admiral - Jacob Remock
  • Vice Admiral - Bradley Braxton
  • Rear Admiral - Jim Dewett

The 6th Regiment is called "one of the most under-appreciated divisions in the Armada" by their peers in the 1st Fleet. The 6th is by no means outstanding in their combat record, especially compared to the high standards of the 1st Fleet, which leads some to question why the 6th hasn't been switched out with a better Regiment in a different Fleet, a question especially asked by Admirals eyeing a spot in the prestigous 1st Fleet.

The 6th Regiment was originally the 5th Regiment under the original Military Organization Act, and was the second Regiment to be added to the Beta Sector. At the time, the 5th and the 6th were the only two divisions of the Beta Sector, and thus the 5th and 6th began to share close bonds with each other. In the Reorganization Act, it was renamed to the 6th to make room for Samenor's rising 4th Regiment. There was actually talk of the 6th being organized under the 2nd Fleet to allow the more-skilled 7th Regiment to be with the 1st Fleet, but newly-chosen leader of the 5th Regiment, Admiral Draccard, made a plea to the Commander as to not separate the closely-linked 5th and 6th.

The 6th Regiment is currently led by fun-loving Admiral Jacob Remock of the Bordooshio. He has led the 6th since its establishment, and while certainly not distinguished in combat, they have been steady contributors to the 1st Fleet's continued success following the Reorganization Act. Remock is experienced and well-tested, and while he is an effective commander, the 6th's status gets him a lot of untested rookies, who have worn his patience over the years.

Independent Divisions[]

These fleets are considered part of the military, but are not classified as members of either the Assault Armada, Special Forces Organization, or Domestic Defense.

Main Strike Fleet[]

Very commonly mistaken as a part of the Assault Armada, the Main Strike Fleet is made up of the military's best officers. The legendary Captain Lorrelas leads this group into battle. It is a very exclusive group that only has 7 members: Captain Lorrelas, Lt. Samenor of the Metedarl, Admiral Mermus of the Lustergan, Dr. McSmith of the Bretalka, Admiral Tanyan of the Fernikki, Admiral Khoffman of the Wub, and Admiral Grey of the Tybusen. Though each member usually commands their own ship, sometimes they work together on the USS Arizona, a star destroyer designed for the Main Strike Fleet.
