The mountainholds of the Thurgar began appearing in greater frequency across the ancient mountain range, the majority of which have been razed to the ground and only a small handful of holds survive today. Many of these mountainholds would see themselves as independent nations, and they would often war against each other or the Tak that would trespass in Thurgar lands and raid cities and caravans, or even travelers. The Tak and mountainholds often burned down other holds in their wars, and every hold would develop their own unique cultures in the differing lands. It would be in 7560 DE that the hold of Thrimbaldor would come under the control of the lord Taghurun Fahrsson, an ingenious king that was often bloodthirsty for conquest. To Taghurun, the other holds were comparatively chaotic and lawless, and he desired to bring his own brand of order on the various fighting mountainholds. Thrimbaldor was by far the largest and most notable mountainhold of the Thurgar, and as such Taghurun believed he would have the power to force the other mountainholds under his rule. Naturally, the dwarven stubbornness of the other hold kings held firm as Taghurun failed multiple times in intimidating the other kings. Taghurun made the choice to train a professional army, whereas the other holds have used mercenaries to do their military work. It wouldn't be long until the other holds would take notice of the idea of a professional army, and took to creating their own.

Located in the uppermost and treacherous cliffs and mountains of the ranges in the continents of Graennarune and [PLACEHOLDER], the Thargric Mountainholds refers to the dwarven city-states that are built in the lands of Thumyr and Thagruun respectively, each ruled by their own High King. The inhabitants of the Thargric Mountainholds are the dwarven hominids known as the Thurgaric Dwarves, whose gruff and stubborn demeanor and silver skin earned them the far more common nickname Iron Dwarves. The Mountainholds are principally divided between two differing lands that have diverged into their own cultures over 2,000 years, the original eastern dwarven land of Thumyr being the homeland of the iron dwarves in its entirety, and the more philosphical and industrious western land of Thagruun founded by dwarven exiles to the west. Each of the city-states, known most often as the mountainholds, are all led by a Lord in a monarchic fashion, and each of these mountainholds have a considerable amount of autonomy comparable to a sovereign nation, only united and commanded by the High King that each of the Lords elect.

The lands of Thumyr and Thagruun are characterized by a large cultural and historical divide due to millenia of being divided and isolated from one another, though both lands keep the same traditional system of federal monarchy as their government. This cultural and historical divide, along with the rivalry of each of the lands, has led to a considerable hostility and rivalry between each land, and by extension the iron dwarves that inhabit the lands. The land of Thumyr is a more traditional and conservative land that still adheres to the ancient traditions of the past - craftmanship, warrior traditions, and the value of the family unit are the core elements of the Thumyric culture. Thumyric Iron dwarves are honorable warriors with a strong sense of humor and friendliness, and are always looking to fight off threats to the Mountainholds. The land of Tharguun is a more liberal and progressive nation, though yet still possesses the characteristic stubbornness of the iron dwarves. Tharguun has forsaken the traditional ways of craftsmanship and warriors, replacing them with the industrial and the pursuit of knowledge. Thargunnic Iron dwarves are known to be calmer and more knowledgeable, with a far more liberal worldview than their Thumyric counterparts.

History

The ancestors of the Thurgaric Dwarves were the Dwangari, known more commonly as the Magma Dwarves. The Dwangari ancestors had migrated into the mountain ranges of Graennarune, while the rest of the Magma Dwarves would spread out across central Graennarune. The dwarves would stay in the mountain ranges of Graennarune, while the other Dwangari would retreat into their underground caverns, isolating both populations from each other. About 3,000 years ago, the Dwangari would begin to diverge into the modern Thumyric culture in the mountain ranges of Graennarune. As a whole, their skin magically began to gray as they utilized magic to adapt themselves to the rough and windy terrain of the mountains. The large amount of Tak Orcs that travelled through the mountains had continuously conducted raids on the Dwangari settlements, demanding that he settlements each begin to recruit and train warriors from the common populace and thus encouraging the growth of a warrior culture in the Dwangari. The point in time when the Dwangari became the Thurgar is a hotly debated point in scholarly circles, though it is commonly assumed that it occurred about 7,240 DE, when the Dwangari began to burrow into the cliffs and mountaintops of the range they inhabited. The first true mountainhold of the Thurgar was the city-state of Thrimbaldor, which emerged at accordingly 7,320 DE, and to this date remains the oldest city in the Thurgar’s civilizations.
