The Southern Africanus Dominion is a human nation and former member of the now defunct Orion League. Following their defeat during the Great Xonexian Schism, the Dominion was ruled over by a newly created puppet government put in place by the Human Superstate. Mass revolts soon swept through the Dominion until the return of the exiled Azania Administration, who retook power in a landslide election. The Dominion began to funnel supplies to any Xonexi resistance members, while simultaneously re arming themselves. By theend of the schism, they had managed to rebuild their industrial complex.
Problems soon arose among the Dominion's rebuilt military. The space fleet was made up of ships now over a decade obsolete, and the majority of their aircraft was supplied by the French. Their ground vehicles were also woefully lacking, leaving their army in a poor shape. Prime Minister Azania swore that the Dominion would never again be caught so poorly equipped. He vowed to rebuild the Dominion military, with a focus on designs crated within the Dominion itself this time.
This massive rearmament campaign has drawn the suspicion of other governments in the Gigaquadrant, both Human and alien. While it is an aggressive act, the Dominion will stop at nothing to ensure that their sovereignty is in their own hands from now on.
The Southern Africanus Dominion can trace its history back to the earliest days of mankind, with fossil records of hominids dating back to over 2.3 million years ago. Modern humans have inhabited the land which would become South Africa for well over 170,000 years, until the evacuation of Earth forced humans to vacate the region. Settlements of Bantu-speaking peoples, who were iron-using agriculturists and herdsmen, were already present south of the Limpopo River (now the northern border with Botswana and Zimbabwe) by the 4th or 5th century CE.
Portuguese explorers were the first Europeans to make contact with the region, using the Cape of Good Hope as a route to for the lucrative spice trade of the West Indies. European settlers in the region were a hardy, fiercely independent folk who rebelled against crown authority and declared independent republics in the region, leading to multiple, bloody bush wars between the settlers and a variety of European kingdoms. The country that would later form the core and namesake of the Dominion, South Africa, became a fully independent republic in 1961.
South Africa would be a racially segregated state until 1994, when the first universal elections were held within the country. By the dawn of the 21st century, South Africa had the second largest economy on the continent and had significantly modernized itself. It was considered a moderately powerful state by the UN, and was an important player in regional politics.

South Africa is a parliamentary Dominion, although unlike most such parliaments, the President is both head of state and head of government, and depends for his tenure on the confidence of Parliament. The executive, legislature and judiciary are all subject to the supremacy of the Constitution, and the superior courts have the power to strike down executive actions and acts of Parliament if they are unconstitutional.
The National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, consists of 400 members and is elected every five years by a system of party-list proportional representation. The National Council of Provinces, the upper house, consists of ninety members, with each of the nine provincial legislatures electing ten members.
After each parliamentary election, the National Assembly elects one of its members as President; hence the President serves a term of office the same as that of the Assembly, normally five years. No President may serve more than two terms in office. The President appoints a Deputy President and Ministers, who form the Cabinet which consists of Departments and Ministries. The President and the Cabinet may be removed by the National Assembly by a motion of no confidence.
The Republic of South Africa was one of the founding nations of the UN, thus granting the Dominion the status it had before the collapse.
The population of Dominion Citizens still on Earth are concentrated in several massive cities, allowing wildlife to reclaim the zones that are deemed unneccesary. The city with the largest population in the Dominion is Johannesburg, although the capital is technically Pretoria.
Free thinking is highly valued within the Dominion, as well as respect for tradition. Many traditional arts are still practiced, even in the colonies located as far away as Andromeda.
