The Republics of Cartiliana are a number of city-states and realms divided by loyalty and personal ambitions of the Merchant-Princes and figures that rule them, all seeking greater riches, power and control over the wider territory their people inhabit, and maintain control over the trade routes and flow of money and riches to their coffers. They consider their realms centers of wealth, science, progress and art, and while they certainly hold much wealth and power, and beautiful architecture and works of art, they are infamously divided, their political situation always just short of war, and prone to backstabbing and deceit among the rulers of the City Republics.

The Republics of Cartilian inhabit the forests and hilly regions of Maelathor, and are separated from the other empires by high mountains and hills that make marching difficult, while utilizing a powerful and diverse fleet. The Republics were the first civilization to contact and trade with the forgotten Everlands, and although they managed to peacefully trade with some, their relations with the tribal Kulaung have been more violent, especially after the attempted conquest of their tribal lands by a Cartilianian General.

History[]

Formation[]

The Republics of Cartiliana began with the arrival of the Drakonians named the Rocanid, who would settle a region filled with the ruined remains of Unknown beings, and who the Rocanid came to inhabit, starting as nomadic, hunter-gatherer tribes, and coming to replicate many of the things they saw in the ruined buildings and cities, replicating language, writing, mathematics and other features to build their civilization. As the years went on, and those years turned to centuries, the City-States that sprouted form the ruins of the Elves developed a system of government called the Republic, and constructed around the powerful Merchant families that developed around their cities. These families would gain great wealth and power by using powerful Trade fleets to sail around the world and gain their wealth. Meanwhile, their city estates would be protected by powerful armies of mercenaries, Citizen Pikemen formations, and other forces, the Republics of Cartiliana amassing great legions to protect their wealth and power.

As the Republics developed, they would gain numerous treasures and great wealth through their trade lanes and routes, and, as Sea Monsters from around the island began to be cleared and the routes became safer to undertake, were among the first to contact and trade with the distant realms in the Everlands, generally keeping things peaceful and well regulated, though this was not always the case. One of the Generals of Cartiliana, Gracus Casrin, gathered an army, and decided to set out to conquer the more primitive tribes of Everlands, to open up further markets and ensure development in these areas would favor Cartiliana and it's Republics.

Gracus and his army landed, and targeted the Kulaung-lead Tribal confederation of the Reimise Siogahad, launching a number of slave raids on the shore-dwelling tribes, before a counter-attack was organized. The Tribal Warriors clashed with the Soldiery under Gracus in a bloody battle at Ikenii Point on the shores, forcing Gracus to retreat, though not before many were dragged away in chains. Though the Republics issued a Censor upon his actions and sent diplomats to apologize on behalf of the various City-States, Gracus still was not punished, and his slaves still sold to market and his treasures rightly rewarded. Gracus, however, felt his pride had been insulted, and planned another attack on the Everlands.

Culture[]

The people of Cartiliana are divided among the various City-States, lead by the Rocanid, and especially the City-States lead by their Merchant-Princes. The Citizens are made up of many different species, though the Rocanid are the overall leaders in military, political, and mercantile matters that concern the City-States. The people generally enjoy a liberal, free nature with their daily life and excursions, every worker a part of a Union or Worker Guild, that protects their rights, and are generally better educated, have better literacy, and better living standards then other civilizations, giving them a sense of arrogant pride and narcissist nationalism about their own city-state and wider Cartiliana policitics when dealing with outsiders. Cartilians, however, are quick to fight amongst themselves, their Merchant-Princes and Mercenary-Generals often eager to gain command and control of more territory, and place their banner upon another City-State, regardless of the costs. The alternative to these wars is the bloody politicking, assassinations, and blackmail employed by the Merchant-Princes against their rivals in other cities, their potential foes in their own cities, and across the world.

All Cartiliana City-States are Republics, families and rich merchants struggling against each other to gain power and position over one another, and ensure the votes of their people, while gaining command over the parliaments, senates and other congressional bodies within their own City-States. While these City-States hold similar cultures, attitudes and beliefs that unite them, each has different music, dress and political stylings that set them apart, only united under the barest margins when invaders and outsiders seek to disrupt their political backstabbing and wars, and uniting as a whole to fight and drive out these attackers.

Countless Warriors, with no work from their own people, flock to Cartiliana to find work as mercs for the Merchant Princes and Mercenary-Generals in the Republics' armies. These figures often become so rich, they can buy their own States, when not changing sides as the wind blows with every new offer from a rival Merchant-Prince, of course.
