The Nexus war was a massive conflict in Masri space, in which the Dominion fell and the Nexus was raised to power.

Origins of the War

The origins of the war can be found in the glory days of the Dominion. The Dominion was a prosperous and powerful space faring empire, with thirty worlds under their control. As time went on they were able to infuse machine parts with living beings. They made the first cyborgs, cloned masri mixed with machine intelligence, connected to each other and to the cities mainframe by wireless signals. They marveled at their new creations and soon put these new cyborgs to work. They were used as virtual slaves, working hard or boring labor that others did not want to do. As time went on some masri were discontent with there creations lack of intelligence, and soon more intelligent models came out.

Ironically, the Dominion's laziness and corruption proved to be their undoing. The newer smarter cyborgs soon began to question why they were being worked to death with no reason or purpose. They began becoming disobedient and soon some began to call themselves free thinking creatures. Not wanting to give up their work force, the Dominion head council simply decided to scrap the newer models and pay the owners for the inconvenience. However the cyborgs were aided by other masri who thought the actions were wrong or immoral, and helped hundreds of cyborgs escape into the massive sewer systems underneath their cities. The Dominion Council sent dozens of kill teams to eliminate the rouge cyborgs, and as time when on it was clear that they would not find peace hiding the the tunnels.

The masri cyborgs, now calling themselves Nexus because their connected brains made a nexus of connected minds. They formed a small but effective army, which set about attacking the Dominion were they could in small raids, starting the Nexus War.

Beginning of the War

At first the Nexus did not fair well, the Dominion could track there positions through the cities mainframe, and the Nexus were not at first aware of this connection. Many nexus members were killed or captured their minds "wiped clean". The Dominion military became so confident from their victories, that they postponed the invasion of the Nexus main base and used their victories to gain fame and prestige in the eyes of the people and the Council. However as the Nexus became more intunned with their connections with each other, they began to realize that their was someone else other than themselves watching them. As they learned this, they also learned how to "disconnect" from the group, and soon began using this to their advantage.

Nexus members disconnected themselves from the main body, and made a sneak attack on a Dominon military base, which became known as the battle of Urdir, the name of the base. This battle is considered the pivotal turning point of the war, as well as showing the effectiveness of the Nexus'es cooperation.

The Battle of Urdir

The battle of Urdir started when a small band of Nexus cyborgs sneaked into the base by way of a sewer exit just outside of the walls. The group stormed the armory while the soldiers were either resting, asleep, or somewhere else, and easily overpowered the guards. They stole the weapons and turned them on their users, putting the entire base to flame. The solders responded and attacked with whatever weapons they had on hand, mostly small arms, and attacked in waves to try to surround and overwhelm the cyborgs. The nexus however, were able to coordinate with each other so effectively that they left no blind spots or means of entry for the Dominion solders, who were either shoot as they approached the armory or fled when they saw the firepower that was arrayed against them. The nexus cyborgs were able to escape before a military force could be deployed to take the base back, only losing one in the entire shootout, compared to the dozens of Dominion casualties of the day.

The Tide Turns

After the battle of Urdir the Nexus was filled with new vigor, and they found a way to disconnect from the mainframe entirely, effectively blinding the Dominion Forces. When the Dominion finally did launch an attack on the main Nexus base, they found only an empty cavern. Over the next moths The Nexus'es numbers began to swell, as they captured enslaved cyborgs and converted masri who sided with them against the Dominion. Soon Nexus raids became more intense, and martial law was enacted, and all the known sewer exits were sealed off or collapsed. However the Nexus by that time had enough strength to contest the Dominion on the surface, and moved to a fortified base outside of the capital of the Dominion. Dominion logs say that they watched in horror as tens of thousands of cyborgs gathered just outside their walls, and it was clear that the Nexus had the advantage.

What followed was the largest battle that the Dominion had seen in years, and the most horrific battle the Nexus had ever participated in.

Battle of the Capital

The Nexus forces drew up in front of the cities ancient metallic walls, which had stood against invasion for hundreds of years. The nexus had gathered a huge army of solders, most on foot but some had small vehicles and mobile weapon systems. However the nexus believed that the key to victory would be their newest piece of equipment, armored cyborgs. These cyborgs were equipped with large armor pieces manufactured in underground factories. Although crude compared to latter models, these armored suits would be necessary to withstand the inevitable firepower the Dominion would throw at them.

The Dominion on the other hand was vastly depleted in manpower, most of its armies were either hunting for Nexus in the sewers or on far off campaigns on the borders of their empire. Despite this there was a massive presence of solders in the city, and most civilians contributed by either serving on non-combat roles or fighting with personal arms. In total the Dominion were outnumbered two to one, but they had vast stores of land vehicle, as well as a powerful air force, which the Nexus had never encountered before.

The battle began when the Nexus charged the city wall with armored personnel carriers, to close the distance quickly and disembarked at the base of the walls. Using explosives the walls were easily breached and their heavy troops stormed in. The Dominion used their air force to full effect, bombarding Nexus forces outside of the city with chemical and biological weapons as well as explosives, but they could not engage the Nexus forces inside of the city without hitting their own troops. The fighting in the city soon gave way to vicious close courter fighting, in which the Nexus had become very adapted to in their sewers, and the Nexus crushed the Dominion at every turn. Soon most of the city was overrun, and all remaining Dominion either fled or barricaded themselves inside of the capital building. The Nexus besieged the capital building, and captured the base for the Dominion air forces, forcing the planes to refuel at distant cities and effectively removing them from the battle.

The Nexus at at last stormed the Capital Building and the defenders fought to the last, although many of the Dominion Council had long fled the city. The Nexus found the city mainframe at the center of the building, and ceremoniously destroyed it, symbolically releasing their shackle's and marking the end of Dominion power.

The Fall of the Dominion

After the Battle of the Capital, entire cities on Teirs experience panic and confusion, the Council was nowhere to be found, much of the military leadership died at the Capital, and an entire army was destroyed. Soon enter cities surrendered to the Nexus before they even appeared on the horizon. The Nexus'es armies marched to all the corners of the planet, and soon every military force was either broken or surrendered. The Nexus set up relay beacons to allow for communication between minds to be possible from any place on the planet, and allowed Nexus forces to coordinate without any extra equipment and from great distances. The last Dominion city surrendered after two years of campaigns.

The Great Exodus

After the last city on Teirs surrendered the Dominion that surrendered were given safe passage to leave the planet, and what followed was called the Great Exodus. Countless Masri left the planet within a few weeks, and soon much of the planet was uninhabited and empty. The huge expulsion from their home-planet has been a scar on the pride of all Dominion to the present day.

Aftermath

The war officially ended with the Great Exodus, however fighting between the Nexus and the Dominion continued as the Nexus launched campaigns against neighboring Dominion held planets over the coarse of three years.

In the wake of the fall of the Dominion the independent colonies on the border of the empire became an independent faction, and religious separatists formed a second faction, both of which effectively resisted Nexus assaults. The remnants of the Dominion gathered in isolated pockets and gathered some measure of power, reforming the Council and rebuilding their military. When the original Council members who had disappeared during the fall of the Dominion reappeared they were arrested and executed for cowardness and treason against the Dominion.
