It is true that blood was shed in the history of the Medwedian Democratic Federation, yet peace and order always prevailed. Other nations succumbed to inner conflicts, but we learned from them. Doesn't this naturally signify the natural leaning of our race towards peace? Does our government, which has long ago cleansed itself of unnecessary institutions and processes, not signify the intelligence and superiority of the Ursoid race and of the Medwedian people? Does our culture, which is based on honour, respect and order amongst the people, not signify our divine task of populating and civilizing the galaxy? Does our stable society, in which everything and everybody has a clearly defined purpose, strive towards the utopic ideal? We must give the barbarian states refusing to join us in our efforts, these eternally damned lost souls the light of civilization by force, for the Medwedian light will lead us together to prosperity. We are the glorious Medwedian people! Glory to God and Fatherland! Glory to Medwedia!

- The famous Balcony Speech of President Ebenhard Andsby Petersen at the beginning of the First Medwedian-Talven War, 2614

Freedom is the source of all suffering!

- Theodor Lynden Frankenstein

Medwedia! Medwedia! Medwedia!

- Chant of the crowds during a party rally.

The Medwedian Democratic Federation, short Medwedia is a young but relatively large, highly expansionist and militaristic state located in the Lower Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. Medwedia, a totalitarian dictatorship, is considered to be one of the most oppressive and stratocratic societies of the galaxy. The governmental elite, headed by an almighty dictator (currently Theodor Lynden Frankenstein, the "Glorious and Honourable President"), employs advanced technology to control its population and fight dissidents. The homeworld and capital of Medwedia is Ærd (Ursus Prime). It is the home of the Ursoids, the ruling race of the nation.

The Medwedian Democratic Federation is notorious for its warmongering nature - while the last conflict on Ærd, the Great War of Planetary Unification, was conducted many centuries ago, the massive Medwedian Armed Forces and the Medwedian Space Fleet expand the nation at the rate of several systems per month. If a planet destined for colonization or exploitation is discovered to be inhabited by a sentient race, resistance is broken using heavy orbital bombardment. The conquered species is then enslaved or, if deemed useless and undesirable, exterminated using death camps, mass sterilizations and even artificial viruses.

Medwedian society is highly stratified and hierarchical - while the ruling elite enjoys a lavish life full of feasts and concerts the lower classes, not entitled to enjoy higher education, conduct hard manual labor or are sent out to cultivate barely inhabitable worlds. Even though the wealthy and powerful have a much higher standard of life, they share the proletariat's affinity for hard work and endurance. Medwedians are known to hold their promises and finish what has been begun, even if it takes multiple generations.

Terminology[]

The name of the Medwedian Democratic Federation originates from the name of the planetary state which occupied most of the north-eastern part of Ærd prior to the Great War of Planetary Unification. The short name "Medwedia" is usually applied in this context; however, it is acceptable to shorten the name of the whole state this way. The official name in Medwedian is: Medwedisk Demokratisk Føderatjon, which means exactly the same as in English.

History[]

To fully understand the Medwedian ideology, one must study the finer aspects of its history. The above link leads to a detailed timeline that refers to sub-articles, some of them in essay form.

Prehistory[]

The Ursoids evolved from medium-sized land predators who lived in the temperate boreal areas of Ursus Prime approximately ten million years ago and lived in small family groups while joining into larger packs for the purpose of hunting migrating Wog herds.

MedwedianStarMap1

Stellar map of the Central Medwedian Cluster, the capital area of the Medwedian Democratic Federation.

The core territory of the Medwedian Democratic Federation is located in the Inner Sectors of the Lower Sagittarius Arm. Surrounded by countless exclaves of itself, the core Medwedian territory stretches outwards into the Spike, where it dilutes into young colonies. Medwedia is known for sharing a border with the Talven Empire, which is the object of near-constant territorial clashes; the demilitarized buffer zone, which is 5 light years wide in most places, is only observed formally. The demarcation of the border in all three dimensions of space is complicated - it forms an irregular compound surface and always changes due to stellar movement, necessiating the devotion of several supercomputer clusters to its calculation. A spherical, tightly guarded "Outer Security Zone" with a radius of 20 ly encloses the core worlds (Ursus Prime (Ærd), Rempus, Prompus and Olchon); the "Inner Security Zone", which has a radius of 5 light years and encloses only Ursus Prime, the capital, is off-limits for most ordinary citizens, with colossal fleets devoted to protecting the President patrolling it.

Government[]

Medwedia is a totalitarian dictatorship which strives towards the ideal of utmost control over the life of its citizens. Any "democratic" institutions are purely symbolical and hold no power, officially classified as "advisory organs" to the President.

The President[]

His Excellency, the Glorious and Honourable President of the Medwedian Democratic Federation, who usually serves a life-long term and is called out by his predecessor from his deathbed, is the ruler of the Medwedian Democratic Federation, enjoying utmost might and power and not bound by the laws he makes. The President is revered as a godlike figure by the people, standing at the center of a quasi-religious personality cult. He is the supreme commander of all armed and unarmed forces and organizations and the de facto owner of every Medwedian citizen, always holding the military rank of High Marshal.

Add your own!

With the death of the Dominatus, I've searched far and wide for a race to serve, and a causes to dedicate my life to. But so many proved unworthy - there were those who clung to the moronic frailty of egalitarianism, there were those who merely searched for money without regard for power, and there were those who were so pathetic, I would have exterminated them had I not been under their employ. These Ursoids may be ... feeble, in comparison to my former masters, but their elite walk with the same gait, and burn with the same fire. They live to see their superiority magnified with each passing moment, and bask in the glow of domination. They are worthy, and in them, I find a second life, both for myself, and for the Tyranny.

- Bane of Hope, Synthetic General of the dissolved Drakodominatus Tyranny

To see flesh scream provides only temporary arousal, to see bones break tickles the skin of only the most inexperienced novice. But the one sensation that brings warmth to my heart is the sound of a spirit snapping. How joyous it is to see the complete submission of a toy, to see him turned against those he once held dear in the name of expediting his suicide. I'll always treasure the memory of a broken father burning his daughter alive, and a son flaying his mother in the vain hope of stopping the pain. In Medwedia, thanks to the call of that Synthetic General, I find a new orchestra to produce the kind of music that makes the heart soar.

- Overseer Praetor Mutilator of the Harbingers of Agony

My masters taught me that that ambition was the domain of the gifted, and that all else must content themselves to serve those destined for greatness, or be forced into their destined position by whip and chain. Such animals must be continually monitored to see that their minds do not stray from their destined task. Privacy belongs only to those borne for greater things, and as such is forfeit for the lesser. I relish the task set before me by the President Theodor Lynden Frankenstein - for what use is steel if it cannot be used to turn flesh into yet another gear in a machine powered by a lust for increased power.

- Anonymous former Dominatus Slave Administrator Synthetic

A nation we have reluctantly been engaged with as negotiators in their many wars, but it is a necessary engagement; if their local aggressions are not mitigated they will surely sound the destruction of the greater peace we have maintained.

- Supreme Marshal Kuulma Utega, circa 2893 UE

Perfect tools for war.

- Imperator l’Evaranur

Disgusting abusers of even the most basics rights. I will happily assist the Talven in crushing this regime into a mote of dust.
