The Federal Republic of Corrick (also known as the FRC or, colloquially, the Scardason Republic) is a small interplanetary republic inhabiting the Corrick system at the outer rim of the Milky Way galaxy. Centred around the tidally locked planet of Corrick Prime, the republic grew from a collection of nation-states, unified by the outcomes of the Intra-planetary War, to an interplanetary empire with aspirations to expand into new realms.

History[]

Early history (-1201 DBF to -156 DBF)[]

The earliest history of settlements on the planet of Corrick Prime are documented in the Apocylypta Corrictus, from which the planet derives it's name. These early records were written by the shaman Atavini, who travelled around the early villages and towns on the land that would become the province of Bholance in the modern Republic, documenting populations, the names of local leaders and figures and relations between the different peoples. As such, extensive records of local data exist from -1201 DBF to -1156 DBF, when Atavini is thought to have passed away. The Apocylypta Corrictus shows that in this period many small villages existed in the Bholance region, with a constant slew of largely insubstantial conflicts between neighbouring groups. There was no real centralised government in the area at the time. After Atavini's death, records become more patchy, as data has to be established from multiple unreliable sources. However, with the development of cities and civilisation, nation-states began to form, and by -199 DBF there were eight states in existence on the planet: Luuthzen, Jazaarinia, Karteng, Bholance, Treblor, Skeng, and the coastal city-states of Vodny and Vos. By this time, the librarians of Bholance had rediscovered the Apocylypta Corrictus and endeavoured to continue it's legacy. The Federal Republic has continued the Bholance tradition of appointing a government minister to be in charge of documenting the immediate occurrences of the time; as such, the post -199 DBF book is heavily prone to politicisation.

The states of Corrick Prime largely existed harmoniously together, despite occasional border disputes particularly in relation to the Luuthzen-Jazaarinian border along the coastline of the Grand Sea. However, the development of industry and large-scale manufacturing began to ignite rivalry as the trading of goods became more competitive; the city-states of Vodny and Vos decided to unify into the nation of Vodny-Vos in order to economically compete with the larger nations. Another outcome of the industrial boom was a massive growth spike in national populations, and a subsequent spike in crime rates. This was leading to an overpopulation of national prisons, and with limited room to expand on the small planet, an international solution was needed.

In the year -156 DBF, a treaty was signed by the nations of Corrick Prime which exiled their growing prison populations to the outer rim of the planet. The tidally-locked nature of Corrick Prime causes only half of the planet to receive constant sunlight, creating a barely-habitable 'twilight zone' between the sunlit hemisphere and the dark, frozen hemisphere. It was to a stretch of land at this 'twilight zone' that the exiles were sent. Despite the harsh way of life this forced, enough ex-convicts survived to eventually form the beginnings of a nation-state - the state of Ghorkha.

Pre-war (-156 DBF to -12 DBF)[]

As the nations of Corrick Prime modernised, international cooperation flourished, and tensions between the states dissipated quickly. This led to major reductions in national standing armies and negated the necessity to develop new weaponry and military equipment. The exception to this was Ghorkha. Ostracised by the other nations of Corrick Prime due to the nature of it's formation, the state of Ghorkha became isolated and bitter, and a desire for revenge grew amongst the population. This resulted in a popular coup in -23 DBF lead by political activist Shandregar Bloom, who established himself as 'General Secretary of the Militarised State of Ghorkha' and rapidly set about mobilising a modern and effective land army, re-energising the ailing industrial sector in preparation for war.

Having overcome it's difficult beginnings, the Ghorkhan population was now growing rapidly, and beginning to overstretch the capacity of the state's territory. Bloom used this as justification to demand the handover of a vast swathe of agricultural land from the neighbouring state of Karteng. This was land that Karteng could not afford to lose; however, Karteng had only a small defensive force which would stand little chance against a mobile army. As such, Karteng sought protection from it's larger neighbours Luuthzen and Jazaarinia, who declared that they would support Karteng against 'any acts of foreign aggression'. Emboldened by this, Karteng rejected the Ghorkhan demands. One day later, Ghorkha declared war on Karteng.

Intra-planetary War (-12 DBF to 0 DBF)[]

The Ghorkhan invasion of Karteng lead to a global war as the military powers of Luuthzen and Jazaarinia declared war on Ghorkha in response. This eventually culminated in the creation of the United Front, an alliance formed by every nation of Corrick Prime to defend against the invading Ghorkhans. Despite major setbacks for the United Front in the early Luuthzen campaigns and the Ghorkhan invasion of Vodny-Vos, a string of strategic victories in Skeng and the Luuthzen capital of Prost halted the Ghorkhan advance, leading to a stalemate that lasted from -10 DBF to -2 DBF. This intervening period lead to a boom in technological research in the United Front, leading to the development of space travel in -6 DBF and the colonisation of the planets in the local system. By -3 DBF, the United Front was fielding orbit-capable military ships. The Ghorkhans, with no way of countering this new technology, were forced onto the defensive, and eventually defeated in the year 0 DBF after the assassination of Shandregar Bloom.

Ridjhest Conference/Formation of the Republic (0 DBF)[]

Following the war, which had led to the deaths of approximately 10 million scardason, there was a serious desire for international cooperation to help rebuild from the ashes which many of the smaller states of Corrick had become. As such, the leaders of each nation met at the capital of Jazaarinia, Ridjhest, which was also the headquarters of the United Front, to discuss a more formal and complete union. Thus was born the Federal Republic of Corrick, encompassing the eight nations of Corrick Prime as well as the early colonies installed on several planets in the local system by the United Front, who had intended to use them as staging points for heavy weaponry which would be untouchable from Ghorkha.

The first major democratic institution installed in the republic was the office of the Overseer, who would act as the figurehead and director of the republic. The first election to this office took place in 0 DBF, and was won by former Jazaarinian prime minister Curtis Nee, standing for the newly-formed Freedom & Liberty Party. Nee's platform emphasised unity and continuity, in stark contrast to the radical notions of the various independent candidates who also stood, many of whom saw this new institution of the Republic as a tool for implementing a broad societal change. There was little appetite for this in the post-war populace, and they elected by a landslide the figure who had steered them through the Intra-planetary War.

Post-formation to Present (0 DBF -)[]

The Nee administration began to build the republic from a fractured minor planet with small colonies into a unified, cohesive and powerful bloc, firstly by unifying the various calendar systems of the republic's former nations into the Date-By-Formation (DBF) standard, where the year of the formation of the republic is measured as 0 DBF. Focus then turned to the colonies. Originally these had been small military bases situated on mostly-habitable worlds, and a period of rapid planetary terraforming turned them into growing cities. Next, a major population redistribution grant was introduced, encouraging citizens displaced by the war to relocate to the colonies, which had now been officially renamed the Home Territories. The grant was a success, with almost 1 billion citizens leaving the wreckage of Corrick to start new lives, and allowing Corrick to rebuild without the desperate need to house refugees on the already-overpopulated planet.

With the Home Territories now being well on their way to becoming fully-fledged planet-wide societies, a system of government was needed to better represent the booming, widely-distributed population. As such, the Chamber of the People was developed, whereby Chamber Members (or CMs) are elected to represent a section of the population. The first election took place in 4 DBF and was won by the Freedom & Liberty Party (FLP), which was still riding high in the public eye due to the popularity of the Overseer. Choston Huumes therefore became the first Prolocutor of the Republic, and lead his government to victory again in the 8 DBF general election, although with a reduced majority due to the popularity of the newly-formed True Atavists, who replaced the Interplanetary Brotherhood of Workers as the largest opposition party in the Chamber. Curtis Nee also succeeded in his reelection bid, despite a strong challenge from the IBoW candidate, and began his second term. Huumes, however, decided not to continue for the full length of his second term, and resigned the office of Prolocutor in 9 DBF, which subsequently went to his second-in-command, Treasurer Thoji Malachi.

Ascolion Independence Movement (12 DBF - 16 DBF)[]

Attitudes were beginning to change in the republic, though. The largest of the Home Territories, Ascolia, had harboured a small but vocal independence movement since the first chamber election of 4 DBF when it was seen that the issues of the Ascolion population were being ignored or glazed over. The beginning of the Malachi government massively increased the support for Ascolion independence, as Malachi was determinedly focused on expanding the republic often at the detriment to necessary infrastructure projects and welfare reforms on Ascolia. This stubbornness and refusal to compromise even lead to a major split in the FLP, who held 25 of Ascolia's 45 seats and were projected to lose all of them at the upcoming 12 DBF election. As such, 18 of the FLP's 25 Ascolion CMs stood instead as Liberal Unionists (LU), forming a new party dedicated to representing Ascolion issues whilst supporting it's membership of the republic. This did not matter in the end, as the conservative Ascolion Transitional Caucus (ATC), buoyed by a republic-wide swing in favour of the conservative True Atavists (TA), won all but 4 seats on Ascolia, with the LU only winning 3 of the 18 seats they were defending. The FLP was reduced from 254 seats to 145 seats, ousting them from government. However, the TA managed to win the most seats but not an overall majority, forcing them to enter a coalition with the ideologically-aligned ATC. It was hoped that the coalition would defuse the growing tensions over Ascolion independence. The opposite would turn out to be the case.

Federal Government[]

The Federal Government of Corrick has two main aspects: a legislature and an executive.

Chamber of the People[]

The role of the legislature is filled by the Chamber of the People, where members are elected from across the republic with each each planet electing a number of members based on the size of it's population. The current total number of members is 458. The leader of the largest political party in the Chamber becomes the Prolocutor, and can form a government and ministry. The current Prolocutor is Dina Horton, leader of the True Atavists, who are currently governing in coalition with the Ascolion Transitional Caucus. See Federal Republic of Corrick/List of Prolocutors of the Chamber.

The Chamber is elected every four years, and there are no limits to the number of terms that can be served by a government. The first election to the Chamber took place in 4 DBF after the full establishment of the colony planets. The current government is the 3rd Ministry of the Chamber and the 1st Horton Ministry, which was elected at the 12 DBF general election, whose results are shown below. Overseer[]

The executive aspect of the federal government is the Overseer. The Overseer acts as a figurehead for the Republic and represents it on the galactic stage. Since the First Reform Act of 12 DBF, the scope of the Overseer's power has been limited, and it's ability to influence acts passed in the Chamber has been seriously curbed, to the point where the Overseer only has the power to delay legislation and not to block it.

The overseer is elected for an eight-year term, and is limited by the Ridjhest Treaty to three terms. The current Overseer is Curtis Nee, former Prime Minister of Jazaarinia during the Intra-planetary War, who is seven years into his second term.

A messianic figure on Corrick following his leadership of both Jazaarinia and the United Front during the Intra-planetary War, Nee won election as the first Overseer of the Republic shortly after it's establishment in 0 DBF, defeating the various independent candidates in a landslide. However, his name is held in less reverence in the Home Territories, where his pro-expansionist policy has alienated many citizens who feel that their issues are being neglected. Despite winning a second term in 8 DBF against a strong challenge from the IBoW candidate, the 12 DBF Midterm Chamber election foretells of dark clouds on the horizon for Nee in the upcoming 16 DBF Overseer election.
Major events under the Nee administration have included the passing of the First Reform Act in 12 DBF which limited the powers of the Overseer, the declining relations with the territory of Ascolia and the development of early interstellar wormhole drives.
