(Note: This empire has sections based on contents of the Kerbal Space Program community. I also did not make Kerbal Space Program, it belongs to Squad. The only thing I own here is the base concet of making this an empire for the fiction universe)
The Coalition of United Kerbin Nations, CoUKN, or simply Coalition for short, is a global supergroup including all civilizations spanning the planet Kerbin. Despite not being an actual civilization per se, the Coalition has roughly Tier 5 space-faring technology and has colonies in other planets.
Unlike most other unions of nations, the Coalition's origins is actually much sillier and childish in comparison, thanks to the Kerbals' nature.
Before the Coalition came to be, Kerbin's nations were severely divided into over 60 independent nations who barely had any contact with each other - although the idea of considering them independent nations is debatable, as they could barely distinguish one another - but this situation took a drastic turn once rocket technology was developed.
Kerbals, being foolish as they are, percieved rockets to be something related to fireworks, but quickly turned them into some sort of sport, in which the objective is to make a rocket cause the biggest explosion. Since the rockets almost always crashed into a neighbouring nation's territory, this caused a lot of conflicts.
Eventually, the now-dissoluted Union of Ceriman Republics changed the objective from causing the biggest explosion to sending a rocket the furthest distance away. This generated a big space race where everyone tried to send a rocket to Kerbin's two satellites, which also contributed to "nations" becomming more political and organized, instead of the mess they were two years ago. This event is nowadays known as the "First and Only Industrial Revolution", as the space race pushed the governments to fund in new technologies instead of worshipping tree bark as gods.
However, naturally the Grand Space Race brought consequences, in which governments went near into bankrupcy due to their strategy of launching new vessels like a broken fire hydrant - which eventually led to the Ceriman Federation to dissolve, because most civillians thought their method of efficient launches were "too boring" - and the massive collateral damage from launches.
On year 54, 54 years after the start of the Grand Space Race, the Kerbin Worldwide Peace Treaty was signed, finishing the Grand Space Race for good, but founding the Coalition of United Kerbin Nations, in which "Kerbals won't battle each other for space, but rather collaborate with each other for space". The headquarters of the Coalition is located in Kelpogart, alongside the space base.
Geopolitical Organization and Colonies Edit
Being a group of nations, the Coalition has a diverse ammount of geopolitical organizations. Not only they have Kerbin as the head of trade and economy, but they also have colonized moons with habitable atmospheres, and made resource extraction bases from airless worlds.
Most of the Coalition is located within the Kerbol star system, but there are plans to send colonies to its' neighbouring stars, Dolas and Corbo, as the three are orbiting a common black hole, Billy-Haddrick.
The birthplace of the Coalition, Kerbin is the only planet in the Kerbol star system with natural life across its' surface. It is rich in minerals and in water, with several progressive changes in the landscape. It has two moons; the Mun and Minmus.
Kerbin has a total of 71 main, independent nations, alongside around 13 smaller dependent or micro-nations, each with a different culture and government. The most notorious of those are:
Kelpogart is wrongly considered the main nation of Kerbin. Situated in the western-meridional coast, Kelpogart was for a long time part of its' monarchic neighbor Kingdom of Omork, but obtained independence during the Grand Space Race, in which the king, bent on following traditional medieval technology, refused to allow the nation to participate in the space race. After waves of protests, the king seperated the eastern and southern areas from the kingdom and lended them to the space-eager population. Ever since, immigration from the Kingdom of Omork into Kelpogart has been at an all-time high.
Because it inherited the riches of the Kingdom of Omork, Kelpogart has been one of Kerbin's most advanced nations, due to combining its' own riches with scientifical technologies, which the Kingdom of Omork lacks. Due to their power, they're often pitted against the similarly-powerful Allied Provinces of Cerima.
Former Ceriman Nations Edit
Ever since before the Grand Space Race, the Union of Ceriman Republics, often shortened to Ceriman Union or simply UCR, was the biggest nation of Kerbin, composed of today's Allied Ceriman Provinces, the many Southwest Ceriman Provinces, the rebellious Exast territory, and parts of Atezaca, Andacania and Locobina. The UCR had the most developed science-technological section of the planet, and, unlike the rest of the nations, was mostly composed of scientists, medics, astronomers, philosophers and aristocrats.
The end of the Ceriman Union started when a huge influx of Kerbals from its' southeastern neighbours emigrated after a huge launch failure from Southeast Fracia involving nuclear engines caused a radiation spread in the area. Most of the immigrants, however, had little intelligence compared to cerimans, and thanks to their lack of proper space technology, caused several protests against the Ceriman Union's policy of slow, safe launches because, in their eyes, "the faster the better".
Unfortunately for the Ceriman Union, the immigrants had alterady multiplied to dangerous numbers across the union, and their dim-witted protests became more dangerous by each day. Eventually, the then-leader of the Ceriman Union proclaimed "I quit", and gave more than half of the Ceriman Union's south-western territories to the rebels, and sold the southeastern territories to the irradiated neighbours to prevent immigration. Due to this happening, a massive portion of the Allied Provinces of Cerima's population is extremely hateful of the rest of Kerbin's nations, and avoid contact. A common joke around Kerbin is that the Ceriman Provinces only joined the Coalition of Kerbin Nations because it has been discovered that alien life truly exists and want to show them how much of "insufferable geniuses" they are.
Ever since the fall of the Ceriman Union, Ussari took the title of largest nation in Kerbin. The country also has a reputation for being one of the first nations who invented rocketry, and made quality parts at that. Ussari was also very skilled at space explorations, being the main competitor to the Ceriman Union. Their old space center, albeit out of business, still is maintained to this day, mostly serving as a museum for ussarian space vessels.
The Mun, being the closest celestial body to Kerbin, was the first to be throughoutly explored, and thus was the first to eventually be colonized, initially by several nations, each with their own colonies. However, because Kerbals haven't yet discovered terraforming technology, those colonies are dependent on Kerbin for supplies of water, although they're self-sustainable in food and air thanks to greenhouses. Munar colonies are also an excellent source of minerals and other resources found in the Mun's soil, such as iron and carbonite.
There are around 30 Mun colonies scattered around the Mun's near side, of which the Mun Prograde City is the biggest, hosting three thousand Kerbals, and 135 resource barrels per Earth day. Most of them communicate with Kerbin with help of communication satellites(named ComSats in Kerbin) scattered both in the Mun's surface and in both its' and Kerbin's orbit.
Unlike other planetary bodies, Minmus is more of a science settlement than a proper estabilishment locations. Due to Minmus' general resources being located under the risky lake beds, mining is inviable there, but the sheer composition of Minmus facilitates easy experiments in there.
Other than science explorations, Minmus is also used as an observatory base outpost for the Kerbin system, mostly to detect the approachment of asteroids and other space objects.
Duna has been in more or less a similar situation as the Mun: Although Duna has an atmosphere, it lacks oxygen, an ozone layer, and the thickness needed to contain a star's heat within, thus forcing Dunian colonies to lock themselves into habitable spots.
The differences, however, are that Duna has polar ice caps that are absent on the Mun, which can easily provide water to colonies. Not only that, but in Duna, colonies are more close to entire cities due to their sheer size, the biggest one being able to host around 35 thousand Kerbals.
The main issue with Duna communications is that, for being so far from Kerbin, communications are extremely delayed, which could pose a problem if a tragedy occurs in either planet.
The colony the furthest away from Kerbin, Laythe has an atmosphere mixed with several elements, oxygen being one of them. Unfortunately, despite being a moon with natural oxygen, other elements prevent the normal inalation of the air, and thus Kerbals have to wear oxygen masks when adventuring out of safely-oxigenated places.
This didn't prevent the Coalition from colonizing it, though. Being the only planetary body that wasn't colonized during the Space Race, the Laythe Federation is a result of extensive collaboration between several nations - of which the Allied Provinces of Cerima and Ussari did most of the job - and is supposed to represent the symbol of union between Kerbals. As such, cities there are properly joined like actual nations instead of being seperated by 64km like Duna and Mun colonies are. Additionally, due to there being liquid water in the surface, colonies there are completely self-sustained, being able to seperate the water from the excessive ammounts of salt thanks to technology.
The Kerbin-Laythe communication lag is even greater than the Kerbin-Duna one, and due to this, messages are often first relayed to Duna colonies before being transmitted to Kerbin, depending on the planets' position in the star system.
Propulsion and Space Travel Edit
Being a very early Tier 5 civilization, the Coalition has to rely on Slower-than-Light technology, and in rockets. They mainly use a Liquid Fuel + Oxidizer combo as a propulsion, and their engines vary between normal LF-O tanks to heavy, large engines over five times the size of a Kerbal to tall, nuclear engines with extremely high ISP.
Other than rockets, the Federation also has spaceplanes. Using techniques such as SABRE engines, and a Jet engine + Air intakes + Liquid fuel & Oxidizer engines, spaceplanes work highly efficient on fuel while on oxigenated atmospheres such as Kerbin's and Laythe's, and once it gets to vacuum, switches to Liquid fuel + Oxidizer engines, effectively making an airplane which works in space, although still relying on Slower than Light travel.
Offensive and Defensive weaponry Edit
Thanks to the Kerbals' destructive but inoccently peaceful culture, the Coalition has a very primitive military system. Most weapons still rely on standard bullets and the occasional missile, but most of these are only efficient against other Tier 5 or 6 civilizations, and thus are powerless against more powerful rivals.
Informatic Technology Edit
Most ships are often guided by flight computers, which give useful information such as Delta-V readouts, Periapsis/Apoapsis details, and Thrust-to-Weight ratio. Thanks to Anatid Robotics and Multiversal Mechatronics, two companies on Kerbin, flight computers are much more advanced, having autopilot systems and even artificial intelligences.
Energy Generation Edit
For spaceships, stellar energy is often the main source of energy, relying on Kerbol's solar rays to power the ship to keep heat in and power reaction wheels, flight computers, weapons and probes.
Despite that, thermoeletric generators are often still used in some spacecraft when they explore places far from a star, such as Eeloo, or when the need to operate in the night side of a planet is too great.
Communications and Diplomacy Edit
Because the Coalition is composed of several diverse nations, there is no central being to communicate - no matter how much Kelpogart tries to be the center of the universe - and thus, each nation is only a part of a much bigger communal voice. However, each colony has its' own communication system, which permits for the sole speech with its' representants.
