The Chalatec is a tribal confederacy native to the plains and mountains of the Everlands composed of three city-states. They are united by shared cultural, political, and religious values. They worship a pantheon of dualistic gods in a religion that emphasizes balance and blood sacrifice as keystones to upholding the stability of the world. The Chalatec are able to wield the elements of Wind, Glass, Light, and Fire to forge empathetic bonds with the saurian beasts that wander their homelands. The Chalatec are primarily composed of the Vanara tribe joined by several other entities such as the dog-like Ghouls and the Rain Giants. They are part of the Mystic tradition in the Everlands, or those tribes that see the Everland's monsters as part of its natural order.

In the days of the Everimperium there was a great city made of gold known as Doranem. Doranem was fastasticall wealthy and sight of many experiments that led to the creation of a race of beings known as the Vanara, small, highly intelligent drakonians created for the purposes of making scientific and magical discoveries while the Doranemites lived lives of luxury. Alongside the Vanara several other species were created to act as servants in different roles with the Trahoxi being created as merchants, the Drood being created as spies and assassins, the Affonire as warriors, and the Kelkate as laborers. During the fall a massive celestial object entered orbit over Narazen before shattering with on section impacting the fault line that Doranem was built over. This opened up a massive fissure that Doranem began to slide into. While the other races chose to leave the Vanara (and some Kelkate) chosen to stay, not out of loyalty to the Doranemites, but rather out of a desire to preserve what knowledge they could. As they worked though Doranem slide further and further until it was and the Vanara were swallowed up by the earth.
The Chalatec were not always the great and intellegent civilization they are now. In the days of the Ever Imperium they were but mere beasts until an imperial lord known as the Dragon King used the blood of the Elder Drakons to raise them to sentience. These races were the Vanara: born from pack hunting beasts of the forest, the Trahoxi: flying creatures of mountains, the Aranth: water beasts of the sea, and the Vulkai: herd creatures of the plains. Among these races several were chosen by the Dragon King to become Chosen with his most favorite being his lieutenant the Hawk. Overtime the Dragon King would become more and more deranged seeking to cheat death. the Hawk fearing his master's madness lead his fellow chosen in a rebellion that would see the Dragon King slayen. When the fall of the Ever Imperium came it is believed that the Dragon King's tome and palace where swallowed up by the earth with whatever knowledge he had being lost to time.

However, the city and the Vanara did not die and instead found themselves in a vast underground world heated by the warmth from Narazen's core eminatting up through fissures in the rock. While the surviving Doramenites huddled in their city the Vanara ventured out and discovered a world populated by many races native to this underworld, some friendly such as the Ghouls and Rain Giants, and some more hostile such as the Spinney Goblins and the Nightstar Elves. Also the Vanara discovered the half of the celestial object that had impacted and opened the fissure, having also been swallowed up by the earth. The strange metal and glass object was actually hollow inside and within contained a strange yet powerful, magic, glass sphere which the Vanara brought back to light all of Doranem. However, the Doranemites began to sucume to an infection which transformed them into monsters with glass like that which the sphere was made from growing throughout their veins. Desperate the Vanara prayed for a solution and their prayers were answered by Sorazel the God of the Dead and his Wife Avuresha the Goddess of Death. The two gods taught the Vanara how to draw power from the core of the planet which the Vanara used to trigger a nearby, underground volcano to bury Doranem beneath an ocean of lava.
With the Dragon King gone the Hawk sought to take his throne to lead his people who had now begun to collectively identify as the Chalatec. However, not all the chosen made by the Dragon King wished to see the Hawk on the throne. One named the Bull wished to see himself installed as ruler and to attain the immortality the Dragon King had sought. To this end the Bull sent his right hand, the chosen known as the Ram, to seek the Dragon King's tomb buried beneath the earth. The Ram would indeed find the Dragon King's tomb as well as a strange glass-like substance which he brought back to the Bull as the secret of immortality. The Bull accepted it but gained an imperfect form of immortality which needed to be maintained by devouring the souls of his subordinates. The Bull would grant this immortality to his three most trust, the before mentioned Ram, the Boar, and the Rhino. These three would kill the Hawk ensuring the Bull's ascent to the throne of the Chalatec. Meanwhile the Ram would begin experimenting with the mysterious glass substance, now called Dark Glass, to mutate many Chalatec into beasts called Scelus to act as the Bull's perfect servants.

However, the Bull's rule was not without those would contest it. Two other Chosen known as the Wolf and the Moth who were students of the Hawk started their own rebellion and were later joined by a former, now disillusioned, servant of the Bull known as the Lioness and the Hawk's own daughter the Phoenix. Realizing the need for a weapon to fight against Bull's dark glass the Moth left for planes beyond while the others would fight, While the Moth was gone the Phoenix would be captured by the Ram and used as a test subject to achieve a more perfect form of immortality via the dark glass. When the Moth returned wielding the power to bond with the saurian beasts of the Everlands, a power called bonding, earned from the Guardian Beasts, he and the others swore to use this new power to bring back the Phoenix and end the Bull's reign.

Together they stormed the Bull's palace and slew the Ram, the Boar, and the Rhino. When they came to the Bull's throne though they found him slayen by the Phoenix who had been driven insane and become an avatar for the abyssian lord Coyolith through the experiments she had been subject to. Coyolith was the true source of the dark glass and through its power used the Phoenix to manifest upon Narazen in her true godly form. With no power to fight a god the Wolf, the Moth, and the Lioness sacrificed themselves to summon Chalkydri directly in to the material world. Chalkydri fought Coyolith and ripped off her head before burying it under a mountain. With Coyolith defeated Chalkydri returned to its plane.

They also allied with the Turquoise Drakons and fought against before reaching peace with the great crocodilian Underserpents. Now finding themselves at peace and with their position in the Everunder secure the Vanara began to look to venture to the surface again to see what had changed.
With the last of their Chosen gone Chalatec civilization was left in ruin and many of them began to slip back into become beasts, their sapience fading. Those who managed to survive either sealed themselves away in a magic induced sleep that would preserve their bodies from the ravages of time or retreated to study the nature of bonding magic in the remote parts of the Everlands. Those who studied bonding became priests of the Guardian Beasts. As the studied bonding they realized it had more power then just bonding them to the saurians, it could be used to share thoughts, memories, emotions, and concepts with one another on a deeper level then mere speech allowed. One priest tried sharing this with one of her beastial kin and was surprised with the beastial kin regained his sapience.

This priest would go around sharing the power of her bond with several others would become her disciples who named her the Recarnate Dragon. Though the Recarnate Dragon would be killed by radical traditionalists who despised her for sharing her bond with their fallen kin, the Recarnate Dragon's disciples would spread across the remains of the Chalatec becoming the Dragon Priests, a special sect who specialized in sharing their bond with their fallen kin to elevate them back to sapience. While many of the traditionally priestly orders saw the Dragon Priests as rather bizarre for their ways they began to accept those the Dragon Priests had uplifted and educate them in the ways of traditional Chalatec society.

From these practices the Chalatec would grow beyond scattered priestly orders into the four nations of the Chalatec. Kotaltec: the forest nation of the Vanara, Utziltec: the mountain nation of the Trahoxi, Tolotec: the coastal nation of the Aranth, and Tezatec: the plains nation of the Vulkai. These nation united by a collective religion and culture would agree to maintain peace and unity with one another through trade and mutual protection in times of war. The Chalatec would also begin a intiative to uncover many of their old ruins, seeking out lost knowledge and those of their kin who chose to hibernate to escape the rigors of time.

History

The Autumn Age

In the days of the Everimperium there was a great city made of gold known as Doranem. Doranem was fastasticall wealthy and sight of many experiments that led to the creation of a race of beings known as the Vanara, small, highly intelligent drakonians created for the purposes of making scientific and magical discoveries while the Doranemites lived lives of luxury.

The Winter Age

However, the city and the Vanara did not die and instead found themselves in a vast underground world heated by the warmth from Narazen's core eminatting up through fissures in the rock. While the surviving Doramenites huddled in their city the Vanara ventured out and discovered a world populated by many races native to this underworld, some friendly such as the Ghouls and Rain Giants, and some more hostile such as the Spinney Goblins and the Nightstar Elves. The two gods taught the Vanara how to draw power from the core of the planet which the Vanara used to trigger a nearby, underground volcano to bury Doranem beneath an ocean of lava.

The Spring Age

After the city of Doranem was buried under lava the Vanara were forced to migrate to elsewhere in the Everunder, thanks to the help of the Ghouls and Rain Giants they were able to set up a new city named Chalan and begin expanding establishing two more cities of Cipacan and Xuian. They warred fiercely with the Spinney Goblins and Nightstar Elves eventually establishing peace with the nightstar elves and reaching a truce with the Spinney Goblins. They also allied with the Turquoise Drakons and fought against before reaching peace with the great crocodilian Underserpents. Now finding themselves at peace and with their position in the Everunder secure the Vanara began to look to venture to the surface again to see what had changed.

Society

Society

The Chalatec are a deeply religious and spiritual people found throughout the various regions of the Everlands. They are a confederacy of multiple tribes composed of three city-states each reliant upon the others for reasources that ensure their social and economic wellbeing. Each city-state has two rulers a Chief who handles all external matters of state and a Leader that handles all internal matters. The seat of power among the Chalatec comes from the city of Chalan, a commercial and pilgrimage center for the Chalatec as a people. Chalan does not hold its dominance over the other tribes via force but through shared religious, cultural, and political values.

Religion

The Calatec worship the Guardian Beast of the Sun, fire, light, and heat known as Chalkydri as their patron deity as well as the other guardian beasts to a lesser degree. They see the guardian beasts as guardians of balance and perpetrators of the cycles of the world. The Chalatec see the world as cyclical in nature having been created and destroyed many times in the past. They see the guardian beasts as embodiments of the natural forces that keep the world in balance and protect the cycle from the forces of either excessive chaos or order. A notable fact is that the Chalatec practice blood sacrifice, though this usually only comes from ritual bloodletting and the sacrifice of animals, sapient sacrifice is rare but done in times of famine or drought. Blood is belied to feed the beasts and empower them.

Magic

The priests and shamans of the Chalatec specialize in drawing power from the elemental winds of Wind, Glass, Light, and Fire. They use this magic to tame the saurian beasts that wander their homelands. Individual Chalatec are able to forge a special mental connection with a dinosaur that is not a relationship between pet and master but rather one of true companions. While unable to hear each other's thoughts like some form of telepathy the Chalatec are able to feel the emotions of their parts and vice versa through shared empathy. Most Chalatec can only bond with lesser saurians such as raptors, and saurians such as ankylosaurs will bond with multiple individuals, with only chosen being able to bond with the greater saurians such as the mighty Tyrannosaurs and others.

Military

Chalatec's military is primarily composed of peasant levies drawn from the farmers and laborers of the tribes. More professional and elite soldiers trained in Chalan itself also join their numbers as well, along with tamed lesser saurians, and levies from the other races that make up the Chalatec with the Vanara. Chalatec warriors wear bronze armor wield powerful obsidian weapons that have magically hardened to render them less brittle. Chosen Warriors known as the Shorn Ones are the most elite warriors in all of the Chalatec's armies and often ride terrible greater saurians into battle, enhanced with magic to give them elemental breath weapons.

Territory

  • Chalan - Calan is found on the plains of the second-largest island of the Everlands. It is a major center of pilgrimage and trade as well as the capital of the entire Chalatec tribal confederacy. Chalan has massive walls the help to defend it from monsters.
  • Cipacan - Cipaca is found on the coasts of the second-largest island of the Everlands, and is an entire city built on a network of rafts. This city-state is a massive center of trade as well as a major center of fishing, kelp farming, and pearl farming.
  • Xuian - Xuian is a city-state found in the mountains which sits in the center of a massive lake of lava. The city-state is key for the harvest of obsidian and other metals that can be forged into weapons and armors for the soldiers of the Chalatec.

Species

The Vanara, known as the Xuihcoatl) are a race of small drakonians native to the everlands that were descended from the cross breeding of saurian drakonians and cat beastmen. They were created by the Infernal Dragolith Chrysothrax to act as its servant race before the Vanara united with the Ghouls and Rain Giants to built the Great Pyramid to imprison the dragon. The Vanara live in every Chalatec city-state but they originate from Chalan the center for pilgrimage and trade across Chalan

Ghouls are the result of hybridization between canine and chiropteran beastmen. They resembled emancipated dog headed creatures with wing-like forearms and dark red skin. Ghouls primarily dwell deep in the dark tunnels and caves of Xuian, the grand center for obsidian mining and the forging of weapons, armor, and other metal and obsidian goods.

The Rain Giants are massive somewhat amphibious giants without hair, plain nearly translucent skin, and feathery gills allowing them to breath underwater. They primarily live in the citystate of Cipacan, the center for fishing, kelp farming, and pearl farming, supplying much food and foreign goods to the rest of the Chalatec.
