This Sector is not owned or regulated by any player, and is free for access by anyone. It has little in the way of unique resources, so all empires are created equal.

Byzan is a small sector of the Milky Way that boasts an impressive number of stars. No great galactic or intergalactic powers have staked any serious claim to the sector because it has little of value to them. There's the usual minerals and energy, but beyond that not much. The sector is mostly dominated by the Algolurn Popular Republic, a rapidly rising power that managed to absorb all thers in the sector through war, subfertuge or diplomacy.

Astrography[]

ByzanPostUpstarts

A map of the Byzan Sector after the Upstart Conflict

The Byzan Sector is about 2000 lightyears long and 1000 lightyears wide. It has a slight curve due to galactic spirals. It stretches from the underside of the galactic ring to the overside of the galactic ring, and is located close to the easternmost part of the Katar Sector, near the Eagula Region. It possesses little in the way of natural wormholes, the the APR has constructer various artificial gateways that lead to a variety of galaxies, notably Mirus.

History[]

Prehistory[]

Compiled from the rumors, legends, and artifacts found or created by an assortment of races, the early history of the Byzan Sector is shrouded in mystery and filled with gaping holes. A civilization called the Fracturn by modern archeologists is believed to have had a massive empire that spanned far beyond this little sector about 2 billion years ago. Grim ruins of planets still recovering from devastation and from asteroid fields that are far younger than their systems it is thought that the empire collapsed into war, or died battling a powerful foe. The period after that is an emptyness, only the very rarest of ruins exist from civilizations after that period and those civilizations never possessed more than a dozen systems before collapsing and vanishing from history. Around 1 billion years ago, another powerful civilization rose up in the region, called the Trass Nation.

The Trass Nation ruled for around 300 million years, until a supernova in the region obliterated their civilization and left only fragments. After that, it took about 250 million years for new civilizations to rise up, but none were sector powers. Then, at some point around 50 million years ago, the region suddenly started to support larger civilizations again. There are three known superpowers from that era, The Verintian Empire, the Halsco Republic, and the Saranago Theocracy. Outposts, ruined fleets, and even the occasional colony (even 2 colonies that were still populated, albeit sparsely) remain to tell of these powerful interstellar nations. They were all Tier 3, possibly even touching on Tier 2 for a brief high period in their existence, and they all vanished at the same time, about 10 million years ago. The cause of their disappearance is not confirmed, but is thought to have been the Grox. Civilizations in the sector wouldn't recover and become powerhouses until around 20,000 years ago, when the Drenmarr Republic, the Warrior Cell, the Union of Klavos, and the Buchnier Empire rose up to battle over rule of the region.

The 5,000 Year War[]

With the rise of the Drenmarr Republic, the Warrior Cell, the Union of Klavos, and the Buchnier Empire, the Byzan Sector fell into an on-off war for around 5,000 years. The cause of this war is believed to be the simple fact that a Republic, Warrior Nation, Religious Union, and Ruthless Empire cannot coexist within contact of each other. That said, the original reason is unknown, but all parties agree the cause was probably a stupid misunderstanding. The wars, of which there were 26 over a period of 4,839 years, were limited by the technologies the nations possessed, which is the only reason civilization exists in the region today. Since the nations only had a few thousand systems to their name at most, and since they were mostly Tier 4 nations, they didn't cause sector-wide devastation like earlier wars. When the stardust settled, only the Drenmarr Republic survived with its major holdings intact, the other three were crippled and soon collapsed into independent system-states that were then subsumed into the Republic. After the war, the Drenmarr Republic reached the level of a Tier 3 civilization with around 7,000 systems, and began to stagnate.

The Upstarts[]

In the modern era, the Drenmarr Republic is surrounded by new, vibrant, active nations and civilizations. The Koiskstrum Collective rules much of the trade in the region, and maintains the largest non-military fleet in the entire Sector. The Socialist Algolurn Popular Republic rules through military power and immense population. One of the newest additions, the Okyno Expanse, is a theocratic nation of ecowarriors. While these new civilizations rise, the old and ailing Drenmarr Republic awaits collapse - and the wars that will bring.

The war ended with the absolute victory of the Algonurn Popular Republic and their allies, the Waptorian Byzan Web and Okyno Expanse, over the Drenmarr Republic, Kioskstrum Collective and Nazaycrum Sovereign State. Afterwards, the APR re-united the Waptorian Byzan Web with their mother state, the Waptoria Alliance of Species, who, in gratitude, ceded their Byzan holdings to the Algonulns. Finally, the Algolurn Popular Repubic used the vast war chest they had amassed to buy up the territories of the Okyno Expanse, whose people the Waptoria eventually relocated to the Katar Sector.

With this, Algolurn domination over the Byzan Sector was complete, a situation that remains unchanched to this day.

Current[]

Algolurn Popular Republic[]

  • Tier 3.5 Scientists/Warrior, 20100Vincent

A communist technocratic dictatorship, the Algolurn Popular Republic is without a doubt the superpower of the Byzan Sector. Their atheism and emphasis on their ideological tenants leaded to war multiple times. They are master in pharmaceutical, medical, biological and genetic sciences along with the computer and electronics sectors, exporting their knowledge for trading purposes all across the Gigaquadrant.

The original territories of the APR were directly to the east of the Drenmarr Republic, to the southwest of the Waptorians and to the northwest of the Okyno Expanse. Currently, they control most of the Byzan Subsector, but curiously no section of the Concordat Trade Route that runs across the upper north of the sector. Of course, given their influence, the trade that runs across it reaches the APR anyways.

Sovereign Republic of Gradesia[]

  • Tier 4.5 Scientists/Warrior, 20100Vincent

Uplifted by the Algolurn Popular Republic shortly after the Upstart War, the Sovereign Republic of Gradesia are a loyal puppet regime to the APR. During the Great Xonexian Shism, it recently underwent upheaval at the hands of the Primian Federation of Empires. This came about after the APR defected from the the Civilisation, which the Primians were members of, to the Xonexi Allies during the Great Xonexia Shism. After a fierce round of fighting, Alogurn intervention drove off the Primians and restored order to the Sovereign Repblic of Gardesia.

Located in the northwestern corner of the Byzan Sector, Gradesia has holds the territories formerly occupied by the Kioskstrum Collective in Byzan. It is also located on the Concordat Trade Route, which connects it to states like the Waptoria Alliance of Species, Scientific Combine of Nakeimato and the JCompany. It also makes them the APR's buffer against the Kiosksturm Collective, which still exists in the adjoining Koikarian subsector of Katar.

Sovereign Nazaycrum State[]

  • Tier 4, Warrior, Ecoraptor3339

An isolationist, though bellicose, nazistic state that is extremely hostile to outsiders. Formerly led by emperor Hazariz, who declared himself a living god, the Sovereign State believed it is their birthright to bring this sector under their heel and impose it's laws upon it. That said, the State was a police state to the extreme, and saw itself to be the epitome of justice and order. The State was known to constantly send out its mercenaries and kidnappers to learn more about their surrounding empires, so they could all the better conquer them one day. However, they were mostly seen as a good recource for cheap mercs and surveilance drones, the only things the Sovereign State "exports" in excange of cheap labor in the form of arrested crimilals of other nations. Said criminals were threated little better than slaves, but they still lived - Nazaycro criminals were either shot on sight, or executed after gruesome torture. Despite its aggressive posturing, the Sovereign Nazaycrum State was fairly isolationist and completely self-sufficient, neither needing nor wanting any trade with outsiders. While it had dreams to expand, it lacked the resources to do so, in great part due to internal corruption.

The Nazaycrum Sovereign State was invaded by the ARP during middle of the the Upstart War and annexed. Its people lived under strict Algolurn propaganda for a time, which meant that, initially, not much changed. The APR however steadily redistributed the immense wealth of the late Nazaycrum God-Emperor to the vast Nazaycro proletariat, bettering their lives over time. Rumours abounded that the Nazaycrum Sovereign State would soon eventually re-instated as an APR puppet and buffer state against Katar's Watcha Subsector, which has become home to the likes of the the Purity and the Reformed Hegemony of Exterioris. With the formation of the Saint Entente, these states have become a threat to the secular values upheld by the APR, and thus the militancy of the Nazaycro will serve the Algolurns well.

The Nazaycrum Sovereign State was indeed revived as an Algolurn puppet state, though with a slight renaming as the Sovereign Nazaycrum State. It now functions entirely on the mold of the APR, though some of its former characteristics remain - including it being a nationalistic police state, despite the now communist rhetoric.

Phrovan Socialist Republic[]

  • Tier 4.5 Scientistst, Tilleo

A recent arrival from outside the Milky Way, the Phrovan Socialist Republic was given the territorie which formerly belonged to the Waptorian Byzan Web. They are a young empire, but have much in common with the APR. As such, their presence in the Byzan Sector is not only tolerated by the larger power, but encouraged. The PSR sits upon the highly lucrative Concordat Trade Route opposite to Gradesia in the northeastern corner, giving them room to expand -even out of the sector- in the future.

Former[]

Drenmarr Republic[]

  • Tier 3.5, Diplomat, None
    • Note: This nation is not owned by any player, and can be used in any fiction as a relation or point of contact. Popular vote by sector members will decide if it gets involved in conflicts and/or fictions that are collaboratory.

The Drenmarr Republic was a tier 3 nation with 12,531 colonies. It sat near the center of the Byzar Sector, and is a primary political, economic, and military power. Despite this, the Drenmarr Republic had been suffering from a defunct and confiscatory government that got little done. Because of this, the Republic was seen as a fading nation, and did nothing with its power.

Near the end of the Upstart War, the Drenmarr Republic fell not to outside forces, but to infighting inside its government. It was subsequently partitioned by the Algolurn Popular Republic and the Kioskstrum Collective.

Waptorian Tribal Byzan Web[]

  • Tier 4, Ecologist, Ecoraptor3339

The Waptoria Alliance of Species, while at first look being alike many other empires, was in fact quite different from most on a deeper lever. All Waptorian minds are connected via an group-mind with they call "the grand web", with smaller webs existing on an universal scale. At times, when needed, the Waptorian inhabitants of Sectors and even planets can form their own, small clusters of webs, communicating with each other rather than with the greater whole. The Waptorian Tribal Byzan Web is such an ocasion, and while in theory still part of the larger Waptoria Alliance, is best treated as a different empire.

It's origins - and clustering - have their origins in the Varapha Subsector of the Katar Sector. There, the Waptorian Katar Colonies protected and hepled grow two small nations: the Scientistific Combine of Nameiako and the Maracai Triumvirate. The Scientistific Combine of Nameiako would quickly outgrow the need of Waptorian Protection and join the Katar Sector Alliance, but the Maracai Triumvirate kept an isolationistic approach. The Waptoria were blamed for the latter, and subsequentely forced out of the Katar Sector "for being extragalactic". In a failed attempt to stay, the Waptorian Katar Colonies tighted up the group-mind of their Katarian Colonies, effectively becoming a subfraction. This was in vain however, and the Waptoria were forced to evacuate anyways through a hastily-created wormhole that still exists to this day, secretely being aided by their last remaining Katarian Allies: The Unified Federation of Species and the Scientistific Combine, the Triumvirate having not the appropritate technology level to help them out.

Going through this wormhole, they arrived in the Byzan Sector. However an anomality ocurred during the fleet's travel, resulting in their groupmind being completely cut of from the main Waptorian groupmind, resulting in the creation of the Waptorian Tribal Byzan Web. They have almost completely reverted to an tribal mindset, living in small tree-vilages, and having an hunter-gatherer society. None the less, the Waptorian Byzan Web still upheld their communist ideals, and all species, whatever they were originally tribal or were forced to going tribal by the circumstances, are considered equal. Likewise, they still believed in Mother Nature as their Mother-Godess and their belief in the Greater Good hadn't changed as well. As such, the Byzan Web sought out an alliance with both the Okyno Expanse and the Algolurn Popular Republic, though the Okyno had pritority. Unlike in the Katar Sector, is was the Web that needed guidance and an introduction to the sector for time being.

In reflection of their society, they prefered more primitive weapons like spears, pikes, javelins as well as greatbows that can fire said javelins a longer distance, though the tips of said weaponry were made from crystalized biomass, making them more durable. As far as true guns go, they used needlers and spikers, that fire respectively a large amount of small or a small amount of large pink, crystallized biomass shards. Their primitive weaponry was in stark constrast of their navy that, though small, still used the ships of the main Waptoria Alliance.

In a sence, it was both the most and the least advanced empire of the Byzan Sector.

Okyno Expanse[]

  • Tier 4, Zealot/Ecologist, MasterMachine

A hyperreligious nation that worships life itself as the Goddess, the Okyiat-founded Expanse often looks at other civilizations as heretics. Luckily for everyone they were an exceptionally small nation with minimal technological advancement and only 3 proper colonies. It also had 4 outposts and a number of exploratory vessels in search of future colonies.

The Okyno Expanse was located in the southwestern corner of the Byzan Sector, bordering Katar's Eagula Subsector. After the end of the Upstart War, the Expanse has been relocated to the Katar Sector by the Waptoria Alliance of Species. As Eagula is for the most part occupied by the difficult-to-transverse Eagula Region, the APR has not deemed it fit to re-instate the remaining Okyiat as a puppet regime, deeming the nebula and it's spacetime anomalies a buffer enough.

Vectivus Empire[]

  • Tier 4.0, Trader, Quark8

The Vectivus Empire was a medium sized monarchy established by a diaspora of Murglbrgs and Urglbrgls, though ruled by the Urglbrgls. Previously, there existed the Cognus Empire, which was replaced by the invading Murglbrg and Urglbrgl forces. Vectivus rule over the former Cognus space was briefly contested by the Murglbrg-ruled Murrtaggh Alliance, whom the Vectivus eventually conquered. They were a state that valued wealth and power more than anything else. During the Upstart War, the Vectivus Empire allied with the Kioskstrum Collective and the Nazaycrum Sovereign State. It was the first state to be annexed by the Algolurn Popular Republic in a push supported by the Waptorian Byzan Web and the Okyno Expanse. This allowed the APR to grow large enough to start rivalling the Drenmarr Republic and start its rise to power.

They were loacted in the southeastern corner of the Byzan Sector, and have since fully integrated into the Algolurn Popular Republic. As a result, the formerly-impoverished lower classes of the Vectivus have become exponentially more wealthy, and greatly loyal to the APR.

Kioskstrum Collective Byzan Colonies[]

  • Tier 3.5, Trader, MasterMachine

The Kioskstrum Collective is a powerful economic trade union that has effectively unified a fair number of races into a single nation through trade and cultural spread. The nation has a nominally powerful democratic government, but the majority of the power is held by corporations and their chairmen or boards of directors. The Collective has a dozen or so large, separated colonized regions in the Byzan Sector, and totals at around 2,700 colonies. It's is very densely populated for efficiency and better profits, with a population of 25 trillion.

The Kioskstrum Collective was the final enemy the Algolurn Popular Republic faced in the Upstart war. After partitioning the Drenmarr Republic, the communist ARP and capitalist Kioskstrum went on to prepare for the destruction of the other. Though the Kioskstrum Collective struck first, the Okyno Expanse and Waptorian Byzan Web came to the aid of the ARP and repelled the invaders. The Kioskstrum Collective was invaded in turn and forced to hand over all but a couple of their Byzan colonies to the ARP, ending the war. Formerly headquartered in the northwestern corner of the Byzan Sector, they have since relocated the center of their state to the nearbly Katar Sector, which they bordered.
