Wars come and go. We will endure. The Ice Age of the Polar Crystal Alliance has begun.

- Arkarixus, the Last Kormacvar, at the end of the Second Great War

The Borealis Galaxy (also known as NGC 613) is a galaxy located in the Ikiwa Eropsii Cluster of the First Gigaquadrant. Widely known for a number reasons which include its inhabitants being locked in a nearly completely dystopian state due to rampant piracy and crime through most of its modern history, the galaxy became a solid member of the intergalactic community following the rise of the Polar Crystal Alliance, a native government made up of many races whose goal is to end all disorder in the galaxy and bring about a new age of piece and prosperity. The galaxy also serves as a new home for the inhabitants of the destroyed Ottzello Galaxy, who now live in an artificial galactic sector and share the rest of Borealis with its natives.

Since its ancient times, the galaxy found itself plagued by monstrous wars and horrors of either demonic or eldritch nature, with terrible cycles of extinction which have destroyed waves of ancient and advanced civilizations across a timespan of six billion years. Over half of the galaxy's sectors remain unexplored by its current superpowers, meaning there is yet much to discover about its inhabitants and history despite its emergence in intergalactic affairs. Likewise, despite the rise of the Alliance, many malevolent civilizations still call the galaxy home, some with enough power to destroy it outright should they ever decide to.

Age of the Cold Ones[]

Borealis was formed around 6 billion years ago, at the edges of the First Gigaquadrant. The first and most powerful space-faring natives of the galaxy were the Kormacvar, a race of super advanced beings who created the Borealis Grid and had relations with the Vyro'Narza. As time passed, hundreds of thousands of civilizations emerged and called Borealis its home, among them a rival race to the Kormacvar known as Zarkhator, who were eventually defeated and brought to extinction. Around 500,000 years after the golden age of the Kormacvar, the Grox Empire arrived at the galaxy, wanting to claim it as their own. The war between the Grox and the Kormacvar raged on for around 500,000 more years, the Kormacvar using weapons such as Project Armageddon and the Grid to combat the cyborgs, but in the end, the Grox emerged victorious and became the rulers of the galaxy.

With the Kormacvar out of their way, the Grox started to learn how to use the Grid to their advantage. It was then that the Kormacvar warmaster Regnatus merged his soul into the Grid and used its power to override and dominate the minds and bodies of the Grox, turning them into his mindless thralls. After this, the Grox entered a state of seclusion and their presence remained unknown until recent times.

Dark Age[]

Very little is known about Borealis between the downfall of the Kormacvar and the rise of the Zoles. What is known, though, is that the galaxy had numerous cycles of empires rising to power and later falling to obscurity or extinction for a number of reasons. 1,200,000 years ago, power over the galaxy was contested between three factions: the seductive Rovegar, the all-consuming Ganthorea and the demon-worshipping Kondrakar, each having control over a great portion of the galaxy's territory and influence. Wars between these three factions, who became known as the Ancient Three, devastated the galaxy and caused all of them to be weakened, forced to seclude themselves to survive. The seclusion of the Ancient Three is one of the reasons the modern races of the galaxy managed to evolve and develop their own civilizations.

Countless empires existed before the Ancient Three, but no civilization is known to have records of any aliens who lived over 1,200,000 years ago, which gave the time period the name of Dark Age for the galaxy's lack of understanding about it. Scientists and scholars of the Polar Crystal Alliance all ponder the reason for the lack of information on the galaxy's ancient inhabitants, with some speculating things such as mutual destruction, attacks from old aggressive empires such as the Alvino Brood and the Borealis Grox Empire or possibly even technological ascension. It was during the Dark Age that the Junction was first sighted lurking around the galaxy, causing the destruction of the old Northern Arm in a failed attempt to destroy Regnatus.

Age of Conflict[]

Main article: Conflicts of Borealis

Following the downfall of the Ancient Three, the next major conflict of the galaxy was the First Borealis Galactic War. The emerging Wranploer Legion wished to dominate the galaxy by secretly crippling the other natives' relations, causing them to wage war on each other. However, the war ended with the Legion being defeated by the Polar Crystal Alliance of old under the leadership of the galaxy's newest superpower, the Zoles Imperium. The next conflict was the Great Purging, which occurred many centuries after the First War was over, centered around a year-long war between the Zoles Imperium and the Borealis Grox Empire for the Inner Core territory of the Core Region. The war quickly ended with the Zoles, and all other non-Grox life, being massacred by the Grox.

When reality was engulfed in Inferno during the March of the Apocalypse, the galaxy remained untouched due to the Junction appearing and defending it from the Xhodocto until their eventual. During the Annihilation, the Borealis Galaxy disappeared for several months before returning as a part of the Local Group. Chronoscopic energy was detected when the galaxy returned, hinting the event was possibly related to the Vyro'Narza. In the end of the Fourth Ottzello War, the inhabitants of the Ottzello Sector were forced to abandon their territory and move to the Borealis Galaxy, to settle in the new Ottzello Sector, which is contained on top of the Highly Classified Zone F13. A new Ottzello Sector was then created in the Western Arm to home these empires. The first real conflict in the galaxy's history since the Great Grox Wars to feature an extragalactic force was the First Wranploer War, when the Wranploer Legion came into conflict with the United Lanat Empire, which resulted in a months-long war between the two factions. The war eventually ended in a truce between the two empires, who joined forces to deal with the responsible for the conflict: the Lino Loyalist. A year after the First Wranploer War, the galaxy was hit by the Clash of the Crimelords, an 8-day long war between the Wranploer Legion and a newly arrived criminal network of the Ottzello Sector, the Zaarkhun Consortium. The galaxy as a whole was affected by the end of this war, which secretly caused the two organizations to merge into the Borealis Consortium Network.

The Second Borealis Galactic War was the conflict of largest scale since the Great Grox Wars. During this war, Vyro'Ralzora of the Vyro'Ralza initiated the climax of his grand plan, and the galaxy was hit by multiple threats, including the Xi'Arazulha, the Vague, Da Rogue Boyz, the Alvino Brood, the Seagon Empire, the newly-founded Consortium Network and the Borealis Grox. However, one by one, each of these threats were defeated, until finally Zargoth himself was defeated and Borealis found itself at peace at last.

Ice Age[]

The modern age of the galaxy following the end of the Second Great War was deemed as the Ice Age by the Polar Crystal Alliance. During this time, the galaxy was noted for becoming progressively more peaceful as its most hostile inhabitants were either defeated or completely destroyed. The beginning of the Ice Age marked the return of the Ancient Three to the galactic community, with the Rovegar quickly aligning themselves to the Polar Crystal Alliance while the Ganthorea and Kondrakar remained hostile to all inhabitants. A rebuilt Zarkhator civilization was also discovered to be active, and the early years of the Ice Age marked the ultimate defeat of the Wranploer people following the rising and downfall of the Children of Synthesis and the New Wranploer Legion. Links between Borealis and other galaxies have also increased thanks to their extragalactic alliances, and the galaxy slowly but surely left its dystopian past behind.

The Zarkhator War and the War of the Ancient Three marked a new era to the races of Borealis. With the defeat of Zarkhator, the Ganthorea, the Kondrakar Dominion and the malevolent Rovegar Matriarch Vileraz IV, the galaxy found itself more united than ever. The rest of its history would be noted to be predominantly stable, with its races only occasionally having to combat forces such as spare pirates or the demons of the Corruptus.

Government[]

Borealis does not possess an all-encompassing government which nearly all of the galaxy recognizes as an authority figure, and the galaxy as a whole remains largely divided. The Polar Crystal Alliance is the closest to this concept the galaxy currently possess, though their influence is still limited to their member races' territories and over half of the galaxy does not recognize them as a leader, with some even considering it an enemy. The closest thing to a galactic capital in Borealis is the space station of Hyperborea, capital of the Polar Crystal Alliance.

The galaxy was even more undivided before the rise of the Alliance due to intense distrust causing most of its native governments to be at each other's throats if not at full-on war, which gave Borealis the moniker of being a "galaxy of disorder". While there was a distinct change in the Alliance's native arm, the rest of the galaxy still suffers from this disorganized behavior for a number of reasons, many of them linked to the actions of the now-defunct Borealis Consortium Network and it its a goal to the Alliance to bring an end to Borealis' stereotype of being a galaxy of anarchy and dystopia.

Notable political leaders in the galaxy include:

Society[]

Hyperborea

Hyperborea is the galaxy's unofficial capital

Due to its disordered nature, Borealis possesses only traits of an unified society, though empires tend to act in largely similar ways or follow similar trends in order to be more well received by potential allies. The galaxy's spacefaring races agree to use the currency known as the Borealis Credit as their official coin, and many regions have been deemed neutral-aligned for the sake of interstellar trading, often taking the form of space stations where all species are given the opportunity to live together without having to worry about their native government though these locations are often dominated by space pirates and criminals.

Extragalactics civilizations also possess significant presence in Borealis, but their participation in the galaxy's day-to-day society varies greatly from some fully embracing it to other secluding themselves entirely. The largest official extragalactic territory in Borealis belongs to the Indoctrinate Collective, who moved one million star systems from the Milky Way to the galaxy during Project Exodus. The galaxy's races are generally welcoming to outsiders and do not impose restrictions to territory size as long as their own sovereignty and growth are not limited by them.

Technology[]

Technology in the Borealis Galaxy's native empires is highly varied in scope. The Kormacvar were the most advanced natives to ever exist in the galaxy, but in the modern era, Borealis is mostly dominated by younger and less advanced races, making the galaxy's majority of empires appear insignificant compared to the superpowers of other galaxies. That is not to say the galaxy does not possess advanced technology, for empires such as the Zoles Imperium, the Rovegar Matriarchy and Seagon Cryptocracy currently call Borealis home and sport technology which rivals or surpasses that of their extragalactic neighbours.

The galaxy is famed for the Borealis Grid, a layer of hyperspace which envelops the entirely of the galaxy and aids in faster-than-light travel through the use of giant constructs known as the Cold Relays. This form of travel is extremely cheap compared to the conventional means used by most extragalactics and has led nearly all of the natives to base their FTL travel technology to use them, which comes in the great disadvantage of making most Borealis natives incapable of intergalactic travel. Technology trades between extragalactics and the Polar Crystal Alliance are serving as a way for Borealis' inhabitants to finally obtain the power of travelling to other galaxies.

Astrography[]

Division[]

Borealis is divided into the galactic core (which is known as the Inner Core) and five galactic arms. The latter are simply referred to as Arms A, B, C, D and E. The closest sectors of each arm that border the Inner Core are collectively known as the Outer Core.

Travel[]

Galactic travel in Borealis works based off the Kormacvar's design. These are known as the Cold Relays, which work based on slipstream, known in Borealis as Cold Relay drives. Cold Relays have many roles in the Borealis Grid, one of which is galactic travel. In addition to Cold Relay travel, may races use wormholes to travel around, but using the Grid to calculate coordinates for the network.

Trivia[]

In-universe
  • Borealis is stereotyped as a "cold galaxy" in the First Gigaquadrant. The Kormacvar, who were the first dominant lifeforms, found themselves comfortable in very cold temperatures, which led their creations to generally be referred to as "Cold" i.e. the Cold Relays. Many extragalactics found themselves mutated into subspecies adapted to live in cold conditions, though this is considered by natives to be a curious coincidence. Outsiders claim Borealis has more cold lifeless planets than normal, though these are considered baseless assumptions.
