Bastion is the chosen name of one of the true Paladins roaming Koldenwelt. He has committed himself to a life of selfless good, while also seeking out information about his father, who left his mother the night of Bastion's conception. While he has his theories, he still remains dedicated to the mission of the Paladin, and seeks out good souls to aid with every step of his journey.

Appearance and Equipment[]

Physical Appearance[]

Quite tall by human standards, Bastion's features are slightly elongated, as if someone had stretched him an inch or two at birth. This has the effect of appearing equally alluring and disconcerting to humans who study his appearance, although other races tend to find it somewhat disturbing. Also among his unique features are his silvery hair, which actually appears as if it had been spun from metal rather than simple grey hairs; and his pale grey eyes. No-one quite understands why this is the case, or how these features came about, but they have been with him since birth and so are likely to do with his father.

Years of physical training and athleticism have granted Bastion a well toned body, although not what one would call bulky in any way. Nonetheless he exhibits a great deal of strength, often able to surprise and overwhelm an enemy through brute force alone. When out of armour he is also capable of impressive feats of agility, although naturally wearing heavy armour limits his ability to do so in combat. He has however been known to rely on his ability to dodge as much as the protection of his steel, managing to duck and deflect attacks as well as block them. He has also developed a natural tolerance for pain and discomfort, more out of practicality than any special training. This helps him deal with all manner of things from running long distances to sleeping in his armour.

Dress and Attire[]

Typically Bastion goes from place to place in well-made travelling gear, consisting of a fine white shirt, dark breeches and tough riding boots, completed by a brown traveller's cloak and a wide hat. When in finer company he tends to prefer muted tones, but still dressed in all due finery.

Armour[]

Bastion's battle armour consists of a mixture of ring, scale and plate mails designed to provide maximum protection without drastically reducing his mobility. Firstly, he dons a padded jacket and pants to cushion blows and reduce chafing, over which he slips on a suit of ring mail. This mail is then reinforced by elements of scale, particularly chausses (hip and thigh guards), greaves (lower leg guards), pauldrons (shoulder guards) and so on. This is then reinforced further with pieces of plate covering the back and torso, with sections of banded mail further reinforcing the armour. The suit is completed with armoured boots, gauntlets, a bevor (neck armour) and barbute (helmet resembling the corinthian style), and the other lesser but still vital components in a suit of armour.

Further to its physical properties, his armour was forged with prayers of protection uttered over each hammer swing, which he can activate with a word to form a powerful ward around his body to protect himself from enemy magic. Using this ability does drain him considerably, as his own divine power is used as the source of the ward's energy.

Weapons[]

As an accomplished swordsman, Bastion carries with him a fairly typical longsword, although it features a decorative ricasso and a more functional bar-and-circles guard, with an extension to guard the knuckles. This blade was gifted to him as a knight of the order, and he uses it as both a potent weapon forged specifically for him and as a symbol of his rank. The blade itself has no special properties, although Bastion does occasionally imbue it with divine power to fight evil.

When tapping into his holy powers, Bastion often summons a hammer made of solid light to battle with. How he came to have this ability is poorly understood, however the weapon has been determined to be made in Elysium, indicating that Bastion has at least one sponsor in the higher plains.

Personality[]

Oddly for a paladin, Bastion is largely cynical, having lost his faith in humanity a long time ago. He never fully explains why this is, if pressed he offers the bland explanation that if his existence is necessary humanity was doing something wrong, however he takes this as encouragement to be as kind and compassionate a person as he can, in order to be a role-model to the rest of humanity.
