The Australia - New Zealand Republic (ANZR) is a federated nation formed from the former countries of Australia and New Zealand, after their succession from the British Commonwealth. In the relatively short time they have been a spacefaring nation, ANZR citizens have become known for being frontier explorers, capable of surviving and thriving in the toughest conditions yet to be found.

History Edit

2010-2020 Edit

This was the period that marked the start of a chain of events that would eventually lead to the formation of the ANZR. The Australian people endured the leadership of four increasingly inept governments, to the point that the country was being lead by an out-of-touch, overly religious bigot, and the opposition leader was an incompetent fop. This led to mass unrest among the younger generations of the country, with millions signing a petition to the Governor General to have the government undergo double-dissolution and new parties be formed. This plea went unheard, and the younger generations began to steadily unite in a belief that the party system was broken and out of date.

2020-2050 Edit

In time, the younger generations that lived under the pathetic rule of the two-party system came to grow into the new leaders of the country. In the year 2034, a plebiscite and referendum were held to determine the new governmental strategy of the Australian people. With a massive voting body behind it, the decision was made to abolish the old party-based democratic system in favour of a new consular system based loosely on Greco-Roman models. Much of the functional government structures remained the same, however the Senate evolved into a system free of party bias, in which the ministers could focus solely on their particular portfolio without the need to conform to party policies. In addition, due to no longer being affiliated with a party, Senators did not have to be concerned with the possibility of only lasting a single term in office, and could plan for the future.

The arts and sciences flourished in Australia during this period, its universities and centres of research becoming world-renowned in renewable energies and advanced medicines. Economic reforms steadily brought down the cost of living, and carefully thought out social policies reduced unemployment and homelessness to the lowest levels recorded in the national Census.

2050-2100 Edit

As non-renewable resources dwindled, Australia rapidly embraced renewable energy and material resources. Solar farms cropped up across the desert, and offshore wind turbines began to appear off the coast of major cities. Tidal generators were established in the major ocean currents in Australian waters, and the country largely rode out the windfall that came as a result of dwindling fossil fuels. It was about this time that national bonds between Australia and New Zealand became ever closer, and the distance between them and England became ever greater. Talks of seceding intensified, and grew from mere couch speculation to actual political movements.

When war in Europe started, Australia was so far removed from the conflict that it did the one sensible thing: it cut ties with England, declaring full independence from the Commonwealth. New Zealand also declared independence, and the two countries formed a steady alliance which would eventually bloom into the ANZR. Largely riding out the war, although often accepting refugees escaping the war, Australia and New Zealand turned their attention to the future, while always keeping a watchful eye on the north.

2100-2150 Edit

In the wake of the war in Europe, the governments of the Australian and New Zealand people met on neutral territory, an artificial island constructed equidistant between Sydney and Auckland, to lay down the constitution for a united nation. Dubbed the Australia - New Zealand Republic, or ANZR, the federal levels of government of both sides merged, New Zealand adopting the new style of Senate and partyless politics. The Houses of Representatives merged, and the two countries became one. The long-standing brotherly rivalries between the two served as motivation to excel, and the unified country began to take even greater leaps towards the future.

Although peace appeared to have fully settled on Earth again, the ANZR government came to a conclusive decision: the Australian Spirit existed not in a place, but in a people, and that people would carry that spirit with them wherever they went. It was time to find new homes for the people among the stars. Dedicating significant resources to research and development, the ANZR developed a small line of colony ships that would be capable of transporting hundreds of thousands of people to new star systems to find new worlds to settle. These ships departed, one after another every few years, most finding planets that could be orbited by the colony ships while research into terraforming technology continued on Earth. Eventually, the first ANZR space colony was founded, and named Gallipoli, in honour of the peninsula where the Australian Spirit was first defined.

Organisation and Government Edit

Local Government Edit

Each colony is overseen by a local council of elected officials, chosen from the colonists present at the time of election. The responsibilities of the local government include:

  • Day-to-day governance of the colony.
  • Civil management, such as collection of taxes and refuse.
  • Resource management, including mining, agriculture e.t.c.
  • Acting on the legislation created at higher levels of government.

Regional Government Edit

Performing the same role as the former State level government, regional governments oversee clusters of colonies. Their duties include:

  • Administration and management of inter-colony interactions.
  • Mediation between colonies.
  • Taxation of colonies.
  • Overseeing defence of local space.
  • Creating legislation for local region.
  • Acting on the legislation created at higher levels of government.

Federal Government Edit

House of Representatives Edit

Body of government formed from elected representatives from each colony in the Republic. Forms the mediating element of the Federal government, ensuring that new policies are in line with the interest of the people. They are responsible for representing their specific colony, and voting to pass or deny legislation.

Senate Edit

The Senate is comprised of elected officials as well, however instead of being tied to a colony, they are tied to a particular portfolio, such as economics or science. The Senate is tasked with designing legislation to apply to the entire Republic. Each minister weighs in with their own perspective on the issue, in accordance with their portfolio.

Military Edit

When the Australian and New Zealand governments merged, it was decided that every level of official organisation would do the same. Therefore, instead of creating separate Australian and New Zealand army regiments, it was decided to reform the legendary Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or the ANZAC. The ANZAC has adopted many of the principles and customs of its centuries-past predecessor, while utilising all the trappings of modern technology to enhance their preferred style of mobility-based warfare.

Colonies and Territory Edit

ANZR maintains a significant number of far-spread colonies, scattered throughout local space with little in the way of a unified territory. A small cluster of core worlds makes up the bulk of what is considered to be ANZR-held space, with more than 60% of the Republic's population living on outer colonies. Many of these colonies are rugged frontier worlds, the kind that most humans would think uninhabitable. It is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the ANZR that they have become liveable, even if just from the safety of climate-controlled hab-structures.

Most ANZR colonies consist of a surface-based main structure with a space station in geosynchronised orbit associated with it. The surface colony consists largely of functional components such as mines, foundries, refineries and other industrial centres. There are habitation blocks, but they are detachable and able to propel themselves into the upper atmosphere for pickup should unexpected conditions appear.

Layout Edit

Newly established colonies are arranged in a radial fashion around a central starport. This starport serves as both the supply depot and administration point for the fledgeling colony, distributing materials and relaying orders from the station above. In time, industrial blocks are built around the spaceport, allowing it to begin its work in refining and manufacturing.

Once the colony is established, a second layer of structures is built atop of the existing colony. This layer consists largely of habitation blocks, which serve as accommodation for workers. There will also be the occasional entertainment block for down time, and some green blocks which contain various plants in an artificial environment.
