Current scientific doctrine upholds the belief that the Stellar Union was the first spacefaring nation in the Aruna Sector, but religious fanatics, conspiracy theorists, and other select groups believe there to be another, older civilization.

- Excerpt from A Detailed History of the Stellar Union

Some wish for the Union to spread across the entire sector, but I think it would be wrong to forcingly control whatever species are still out there, awaiting to be discovered.

- Utyana Meirial

The Aruna Sector is region of space 1,000 light years long and 1,200 light years wide. It is located in the Carina-Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy, and is one of the Inner Sectors of the Lower Sagittarius Arm. The Sector is home to about two-million star systems, 700,000 habitable planets, and about a dozen species of sentient life. The sector formed around 12 billion years ago, and life first developed 6 billion years ago. Spacefaring civilization first developed around 4,000 years ago, but the modern nations developed later. The sector's main inhabitants are the Stellar Union and the Zagresi Cooperative, but small empires do exist in the far reaches of the sector. The sector was unexplored by the greater galaxy until the Stellar Union's introduction to the Gigaquadrant, when its inhabitants publicized their existence.

Early History (Unknown-100 BUE)Edit

Species Evolve, Civilization Arises, and Communication Begins

A prehistoric Zagresi watches over his herd.

Many hundreds of thousands of years ago, sentient life began to appear in the Aruna Sector. The first sentient species to appear was the Beyur, but over the four hundred thousand years following their evolution, all other known species evolved. Each species developed a civilization before 5,000 BUE, and every species except the Dhyra had become spacefaring by 100 BUE. During this time, radio signals had not reached out to be discovered by other species, isloating them while they developed. Then, the first contact between any two species of the Aruna Sector occured in 100 BUE between the Ciamith and Fenggeha. The two species had a tense relationship, mostly due to their proximity and their mutual desire to control a resource-rich swathe of space that was located in between their empires. Because wormhole and instant-communication technology had not been invented at the time, maintaining communications between the two species was difficult, and issues were near impossible to resolve.

Formation of Empires (99 BUE-1,000 UE)Edit

The Slow War

A small fleet defends the planet Wucra during the Slow War.

In 52 BUE, after decades of tense relations, the Fenggeha declared war on the Ciamith. The war started with a Fenggeha attack on the planet Eddon. The world was defenseless, and surrendered without a single shot being fired. However, a message was sent to the Ejhencala (Ciamith Emperor) by the people of Eddon warning that future attacks would occur. As the message traveled, the Fenggeha fleet moved to attack Aviai, which was home to much of the Ciamith's fleet. By the time the Fenggeha arrived, the Ciamith fleet had been dispatched to attack Wucra, a world home to the Fenggeha's largest shipyard. With Aviai weak, the Fenggeha scored another easy victory, destroying the military base and conquering the planet. Soon after, the Ciamith fleet arrived over Wucra and destroyed eery ship that still remained dormant. When news of both attacks reached the Ejhencala and the Fenggeha President, they were enraged. Both orderd their fleets to attack the other's homeworld, and the tensions built as the fleets moved towards Jehpran and Iyescene. The Ciamith fleet was the first to arrive, and it immediately began to bombard Iyescene. Meanwhile, the Fenggeha fleet began to bombrad Jehpran. Eventually, both fleets were ruined and the war ended without a victor. Peace talks began soon after. After three years of peace, the Ciamith offered to have joint control over the desired star systems, and have a council of delegates from both nations discuss issues. The deal was accepted by the Fenggeha, with the only provision being that the council would be held on Iyescene. With the agreement in place, the Stellar Union was born.
Zagresi Unification

In 76 UE, after over two hundred years of the Zagresi-run Azesan Empire spreading into space, the King of the Empire decided to finally conquer all remaining independent Zagresi factions. Because of the Azesan Empires size and relative technological advancement, most other factions were quickly conquered and absorbed. Only two empires, the Matansni and Zianori, remained after the first five years of the Azesan's attack. The Matansni and Zianori managed to hold back for another five years, but the size of the Azesan Empire eventually overwhelmed the Matansni, and the Zianori were on the brink of collapse. The Azesans continued to advance, until only the Zianori capital city remained independent. Then, Azesan troops besieged the city, and the Azesan King was faced with a choice: to raid the city or to destroy it. After a few months of decision making, the King ordered all his troops to retreat, letting the Zianori believe that the war had ended. Then, later that same day, the Zianori people celebrated their survival with a great feast and parade. While the Zianori celebrated, the Azesan King ordered a small group of bombers to fly over the city and drop three small nuclear warheads. When the bombs detonated, very little remained of the city except crumbling buildings and burned corpses. After this, the Azesan King declared himself the official ruler of all Zagresi territories, thus marking the beginning of the Great Zagresi Empire and the end of the Zagresi War for Unification.

The Union Expands

In the five hundred years following the formal creation of the Stellar Union, much of the focus of the government had been calming domestic tensions between both species. The government claimed that this had been achieved, but tensions still existed, and higher level institutions remained segregated, not by law, but by societal standard. Despite protests from many individuals, nothing would be done until the addition of the Aa'griaa to the Stellar Union in 548 UE. With an outside perspective, many prominent Aa'griaa individuals realized the segregation that remained between the Fenggeha and the Ciamith. Through the media, scientific community, and political system, the Aa'griaa pushed the idea that equality was what was needed and ultimately suceeded in reducing racial tensions. The Aa'griaa also brought new ideas, technologies, and art forms to the Stellar Union. The peak of this new flood of ideas resulted in the invention of the first wormhole drive in 605 UE. With the wormhole drive, colonization could function at a faster rate, allowing the Stellar Union to gain more star systems and territory. During this time, the Aa'griaa brought about the idea of a more centralized government. This was soon implemented, and the Stellar Union began to resemble a confederacy more than a supranational organization.

The Alliance Wars

By the 900's UE, colonization was at the fastest rate it had ever been. Colony ships were being sent out into the unknown by the dozens, and astronomers worked diligently to make sure each one was headed to a colonizable world. As the Stellar Union expanded, it pushed its territory outwards towards the undiscovered Alliance of Yuapur. The Alliance was an empire led by the Beyur species for over 2,000 years, and it was very wary of other species. When the Alliance learned of colony ships invading their space, they immediately began attacking and destroying colony ships. The strategy was to sneak up on a colony ship and attack it with the full force of the dispatched fleet. This often destroyed the colony ships before any distress signal could be sent out, but when a message did leak, the Stellar Union was infuriated. The Supreme Marshal then declared that a military would be built up to attack the Alliance of Yuapur. After five years of construction the fleet was ready, and it was sent out to attack the world of Dushyur. The attack was devastating for the Beyur, with a loss of all defenses on the planet. Enraged, the Beyur Queen ordered the Beyur fleet to attack any of the Stellar Union's ships and colonies. This resulted in the complete destruction of around a dozen of the Union's colonies, but the Stellar Union retaliated by destroying a large Beyur shipyard on Yuyur.

With the Stellar Union now advancing on Shirar, the homeworld of the Beyur and capital of the Alliance, the Queen ordered the fleet to return to Shirar and prepare for a fight. However, when the fleet arrived, the Stellar Union's fleet had forced much of the planet into surrendering. The Beyur fleet then engaged the Union fleet, but they were overwhelmed and defeated. Without a military to fight back, the Beyur Queen surrendered, and the Stellar Union celebrated their victory. The war officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Shirar in 996 UE and the annexation of the Beyur into the Stellar Union. The treaty forced the Alliance of Yuapur to cease all trade with foreign nations and to temporarily give up authority until the government deemed the Beyur worthy of becoming a State and holding two delegates on the Embassy. Because the Beyur had to cease trade with all other empires, the Zagresi Empire lost its biggest trade partner, which led to an economic recession.

Discovery, Tension, and War (1,000 UE-2,020 UE)Edit

Further Expansion

After the Stellar Union's victory in the Alliance Wars, the Beyur were granted all rights as a state in 1,045 UE. Colonization was still going on, and the Stellar Union discovered more species because of its expansion. The species were the Dhyra, Leguulsha, and Servinii, and they would all join the Union over the course of the next few centuries. With each annexation, the Stellar Union experienced a small economic boom, and the new resources, ideas, and opportunities helped accelerate growth. After the final annexation, the rapid expansion had finally died down to become a slow and gradual process, and the Stellar Union focused its wealth on developing the infrastructure and military. New shipyards and space stations were built with the variety of resources in Dhyra and Leguulsha space, and the Servinii helped to fill many of the new positions within the military. Large exploration vehicles were also built, and they were sent out to explore.

The Meeting of Superpowers

In 1,673 UE, two exploration vehicles ran into each other when exploring the Iye'en System. One was from the Stellar Union, and the other was from the Zagresi Empire. Contact was established, and eventually the Supreme Marshal and the King were able to discuss diplomatic relations, trade, and other topics. The meeting ended with the establishment of many trade agreements, and both partied then continued exploring surrounding systems. This newfound trade helped boost both nation's economies, and it also brought the Stellar Union knowledge of the Yshaena. These trade relations were positive for many centuries, but the increasingly zealous kings of the Zagresi Empire strained the relationship between the Empire and the Union.

The Zagresi Wars

An antimatter missile approaches a large Zagresi city.

By 1,968 UE, rogue terrorists attacked the Stellar Union, and tension between the Zagresi Empire and Stellar Union skyrocketed. Both governments worked together to stop the terrorism, but the terrorism continued. The terror attacks led many in the Stellar Union to discriminate Zagresi, and those in the Zagresi Empire returned the hate. Eventually, the relations deteriorated so much that the Union and the Empire had to cease trade. However, the last straw was when a bomb detonated in the Embassy Spire on Iyescene. Despite there being no deaths, the people pressured the Embassy into passing the Zagresi Exclusion Act, which prohibited any Zagresi from living in the Stellar Union. The Zagresi Empire was infuriated by the Act, and declared that it was an attack on the Zagresi people. With tensions higher than ever, both nations began to build up militaries, beginning the Zagresi Cold War.

The Zagresi Cold War lasted for twenty-five years and ended with a Zagresi attack on the Stellar Union in 2,008 UE. Now that war had begun, the militaries built up by both nations could finally be put to use. Early battles put the Zagresi fleet gaining on Iyescene, but the Union fleet quickly retaliated and reconquered the lost colonies. By 2,010 UE, the war had reached a stalemate, with battles showing massive numbers of casualties for very little gain. However, 2,012 UE saw the Stellar Union begin to advance further and further. Finally, in 2,013 UE, the Union attacked Zagre. Millions of casualties resulted from the battle above the planet, but the battle ultimately resulted in a Union victory. The Stellar Union then commanded the Zagresi living on Zagre to board what few Zagresi ships remained and leave the system. However, while the Zagresi were boarding the ships, one admiral ordered antimatter missiles (a secret weapon that had been developed in case the Union would lose the battle) to be fired on the planet. As the missiles exploded on Zagre's surface, people on all ships watched with horror. Soon after the explosions, all Zagresi ships fled the system, and the Union Navy returned to Iyescene. The admiral who bombed Zagre was court-martialed, and the Ciamith's Ecological Conservation Organization helped to restore life to the affected regions on Zagre.

Peace and Development (2,021 UE-2,994 UE)Edit

Rebuilding an Empire

The Zagresi colonize the planet Zagrenisi.

After the Zagresi Wars, Zagresi refugees colonized the planet of Zagrenisi. With the Zagresi Empire shattered, the refugees founded a new Zagresi Empire, called the Zagresi Cooperative. The Cooperative's first action was to declare that all former Zagresi colonies and now independent Zagresi worlds were under their control. Despite this claim, most Zagresi planets, especially those on the borders of the old Zagresi Empire, refused to accept the Zagresi Cooperative as a legitiment government and instead remained independent. The Cooperative then, under the command of the King, wrote a constitution. From here, the Cooperative spent the following centuries expanding their military and colonizing hundreds of systems. The new colonies founded by the Cooperative generated large amounts of money. The money was mostly used to finance more colonies and more military development, but infrastructure and other projects benefitted as well. Technology also received a boost through deals with the Stellar Union's black market. These deals allowed the Zagresi Cooperative to keep tabs on what technology the Stellar Union had at its disposal, along with allowing the Cooperative to implement it into its own military and infrastructure.
Depression and Development

While the Zagresi Cooperative was establishing itself, the Stellar Union continued to grow and prosper. Much of this growth came with the annexation of the Yshaena in 2,172 UE and the waves of colonization that followed. In the century following the annexation, the Stellar Union improved living conditions, saw an increase in the average life expectancy, updated the infrastructure substantially, and reduced the gap between the rich and the poor. People celebrated the prosperity, but this did not stop an economic crisis. In 2,629 UE, the largest stock market crash in the history of the Union occured. The crash led to widespread unemployment, foreclosure, and closing of businesses. The depression worsened over the following two years, until the entire Union stood on the brink of political chaos and civil war. Many assassination attampts occured in 2,631 UE, and the government desperately tried to hold the Union together. When elections came around in 2,635 UE, a stronger government was implemented and the crisis was resolved before the next elections.

Now that both the Stellar Union and Zagresi Cooperative were prosperous, peace was achieved. Both nations promoted the growth of their militaries and the development of infrastructure. This prosperity lasted well into the 2,900's, but in 2,978 the Zagresi Cooperative had a small recession. The rise of Gorebor Azesa into the position of King helped to fix the economy, when he centralized the government to allow him to make more executive decisions without the planetary leaders getting in the way. Ten years later, the Stellar Union also had a shift in the government's power. The passing of the Militia Act in 2,988 UE decentralized the government and gave power to the individual states, allowing them to refuse a military draft if they ever felt the need. Then in 2,995 UE, a large supporter of this movement, Utyana Meirial, would be chosen to become the Supreme Marshal.

New Community, New Conflicts (2,995 UE-The Present Day)Edit

The Greater Intergalactic Community

The Embassy discusses how to deal with foreign nations.

In 2,997 UE, Utyana Meirial sent out a message that alerted the First Gigaquant to the Stellar Union's existence. Replies were received from many nations, including the New Cyrannian Republic and Mendel Pact. Trade and diplomatic relations were established with these nations, and the Stellar Union received new technologies to help them improve their FTL travel and utilize the natural andasium deposits. The Stellar Union also learned of the United Gigaquadrantic Alliance that same year, and the Union joined it eagerly. For the rest of Utyana's first term, her Minister of Foreign Relations, Dhokh Enhyra, promoted trade and diplomatic relations between more nations, including the Drodo Empire, Slukatian Empire, and Talven Empire.

In 3,000 UE, the elections saw the bringing in of many new delegates, like Lorr Traa'aa, and the return of old delegates, like Aeyandua Yrdirsi. These delegates ultimately reelected Utyana to serve a second term, and she appointed her same council of assisstants. Meanwhile, the Zagresi Cooperative, under Gorebor Azesa, continued to build up its military and establish underground relations with foreign nations.

The events of history are heavily dependent on the locations of resources, governments, and people.

Physical FeaturesEdit

The Aruna Sector is 1,000 light years long and 1,200 light years wide, and extends vertically to encompass all stars with 500 light years of the galactic plane. This means that the sector encompasses just over two million star systems. The physical layout of the Aruna Sector is based on two regions: a dense portion of the Carina-Sagittarius arm located in the south and a sparse, relatively empty portion of space in the north. The portion that occupies the galactic arm is closer to the galactic center than the empty space. A large nebula, called the Mazxi Nebula, is located in the south-west of the Sector and is home to large deposits of andasium. Gravitational anomalies and black holes are common in the center of the sector, and the existence of intergalactic wormholes in the region has become a hotly debated topic among scientists, but missions to explore and chart these regions of space are still awaiting funding.

Political LandscapeEdit

The astropolitical landscape of the Aruna Sector contains two large nations. The nations are the Stellar Union and Zagresi Cooperative. The Stellar Union is located in the south-west corner of the sector, and surrounds the Mazxi Nebula. The Union contains around 45,000 star systems, but only 30,000 are colonized. The Zagresi Cooperative is smaller, containing around 6,000 star systems but only colonizing 5,600. The Cooperative is located in the center of the sector, just north of the gravitational anomalies and black holes. It is believed that there may be more sentient races in the Aruna Sector, but they are, as of now, unknown.
