Ab initio usque ad astra.

- Traditional motto of the Aldebaran Association

The Aldebaran Association is one of the most influential Deisnan megacorporations, with its primary competitor being the Antares Corporation. Aldebaran has a near-monopoly in much of Deisna's aerospace, chemical and material manufacturing, electronics and energy sectors, the latter two being responsible for most of its civilian customer base, while its main competition is in the areas of cargo shipping and naval vessels. Aldebaran has little presence in the fields of biotechnology and weaponry, with those being dominated by Algol Industries and Castor Industries respectively.

While not engaged in explicitly illegal activity, some of Aldebaran's operations are considered morally questionable, such as their co-opting of several major universities to perform research in condensed matter physics, chemical engineering and materials science using public funding. Two semi-secret skunkworks divisions of Aldebaran are known to exist: Solitech, which is believed to deal with finding applications for the newest advances in high-energy physics, and the so-called Mad Scientist Division or MSD, which according to whistleblowers is based around the development of creative, bizarre, and often impossible scientific and technological speculation.

History Edit

The beginnings of the Aldebaran Association date back to the late ninth century, when several revolutions in theoretical and applied physics, particularly in the fields of quantum mechanics and electromagnetism, were taking place. A group of highly-esteemed physicists and chemists, including Luceo Aucellus, Parvus Coluber and Verramicus Luminosus decided to use this newly-gained knowledge for the good of all of the people of Deisna, as well as to supplement their relatively low researchers' wages. In 887, five years after Luceo's annus mirablis, the Aldebaran Association was founded, focused on developing and marketing practical applications for the rapidly-growing world of electricity.

Over the next forty-five years until Luceo's death, Aldebaran's influence expanded to the extent that they were able to buy out or merge with several smaller companies in the chemical engineering sector, and combined this acquired capacity with their own expertise to break into, and soon dominate, the new field of aerospace engineering. While the first spacecraft were created and launched by governments, Aldebaran soon took over the commercialisation of space, and from 939 to 960, the Aldebaran Satellite Fleet was placed into orbit, where it has been maintained and upgraded constantly since. In the following decade, advances in computer science led to the spread of the consumer electronics industry, and Aldebaran's importance in everyday life became firmly embedded in the public consciousness with the adoptation of digital computing into millions of homes.

By 970, the Aucellus dynasty was the only one of the original scientists' families to both remain and have any interest in maintaining the company, and on the centenary of its foundation, the mysterious disappearance of Luceo's great-grandson Parvus Aucellus on board an Aldebaran cruiser (rumoured to have been sank or captured by an Antares-hired private military company) led to official ownership of Aldebaran falling to Parvus's own 26-year-old son Fil Aucellus, although in practice, the day-to-day running of the corporation remains managed by a team of more experienced businessmen.

Economy Edit

Overall, the Aldebaran Association is the second largest company in the world, with the Antares Corporation having assets that are significantly larger in absolute terms, but with only a small difference proportionally. Much of Aldebaran's trade is to the general public, as they and their subcontractors not only produce and supply both the vast majority of electrical and electronic goods on Deisna and most of the software on which they run, but also generate the energy required for their operation with a wide range of nuclear, solar and hydroelectric power plants and produce thousands of types of energy storage device.

Furthermore, Aldebaran's vast research base feeds into numerous other industries, from civil engineering to textile manufacturing, causing them to invest in mining and processing operations for the mass production of their own metals, ceramics, plastics and nanomaterials. Most significantly, Aldebaran has dedicated a large portion of its workforce to the maritime and aerospace industries, developing many of the world's cargo and naval vesels and most of the private, commercial and military aircraft that regularly grace the skies, along with establishing the largest satellite constellation in Deisna orbit. The Aldebaran Satellite Fleet's official purposes include environment and weather monitoring, scientific research, communications and satellite-aided navigation, but it is widely suspected that they are also used for reconnaissance, with unproven rumours of industrial espionage being prevalent, and some may even be armed.

Although the Aldebaran Association does not devote much of its resources to attempt competition against the pharmeceutical and military operations of Algol and Castor, developments in those areas often arise as a side-effect of other research, and particularly in the latter case, Aldebaran fields its own security force equipped with its own weapons and armour. All of the technology used by this force is either inferior or equal to that of Castor Industries, but a few prototypes of automated weapons and powered armour have been constructed in the most heavily-guarded and secret facilities, while Solitech installations are apparently guarded with the use of advanced (if not yet efficient) technology alongside conventional weapons.

Solitech and MSD Edit

Solitech is the division of the Aldebaran Association focused on researching, and developing applications for, high-energy and theoretical physics. Nearly all of these are far beyond present-day technology, with some of the concepts studied by the division including practical uses of black holes and quantum solitons. Other ideas are closer to realisation, such as those involving PeV particle beams. Any technology that may actually have been developed as a result of Solitech's research, such as the enigmatic defence systems that protect Solitech installations, is currently kept secret even to the higher ranks of Aldebaran's management.

The Mad Scientst Division, better known as MSD, deals with far more speculative ideas that may be relevant to any science, not just physics. Surprisingly, all of these are kept highly classified, despite the fact that the majority turn out to be completely impossible, but whistleblowers have revealed codenames such as "Project Essence", "Project Fusion" (unrelated to nuclear fusion, which is an openly researched topic) and "Project Shidium".

Trivia Edit

  • The logo for the Aldebaran Association was created by Xho, after his previous designs for Antares, Algol and Castor. The name Aldebaran was chosen to contrast with Antares, as they are similarly bright giant stars as viewed from Earth, but are on opposite sides of the celestial sphere.
  • The names of the founders of Aldebaran are loosely based on real-world physicists of the early 20th century, altered and haphazardly converted into Latin (and not necessarily in that order).
