Vkanieos (Kokaliaricarcharias upammos), also known as ghudufrells and Slimbsharks, are a small shark species native to Rachantes.

Etymology[]

The original name for the creature, Vkanieo, was created by the Frento, meaning sand tooth in their language. This name likely refers to the creature's means of hunting, which involve looking for prey beneath the sand of the seafloor.

The name ghudufrell was created by the Sporotamus. It roughly translates beach fin from Rachspotorian, alluding to this shark-like creature mainly inhabiting the seashores of the Faraterean sea.

Slimbshark, the word for the creature most commonly used, was coined within the New Gods Empire. It likely refers to the creature's resemblance to a shark, but with a much thinner, "slimb" body.

History[]

Slimbsharks appeared and evolved in the planet Rachantes. Besides their role in the ecosystem, they haven't participated in any historical events yet.

Biology[]

Description[]

Slimbsharks are rather small creatures, with a length of never more than two meters and a weight ranging between 5 and 15 kilograms.

Slimbsharks overall look like Earth's sharks. They have four limbs: two large pectoral fins and two small pelvic fins. They also have a large dorsal fin, a small anal fin, and two tail fins, the upper one being usually larger than the lower one. Their head is narrow and highly similar to that of a shark. Their body, however, is vermish and lithe, unlike that of Earth's sharks. They also lack a smaller, second dorsal fin. Unlike that of sharks, the Slimbshark's integument consists of slick scales, resembling those of regular fish. They are grey with an orange underbelly.

Sexual dimorphism is present in Slimbsharks, but it is barely distinguishable. Males have a pair of claspers, like Earth's sharks, but these aren't visible at first sight due to their small size.

Traits and abilities[]

Slimbsharks are very fast and agile swimmers, thanks to their body plan and cartilage skeletons, which allows them to easily escape from predators in case of danger; although this body plan is also the main reason for their lack of muscular strenght. They are also very fragile, as their scales don't provide protection against most threats.

The Slimbshark's body plan is adapted for sinking into the sand of the seafloor in search of food, as well as, like mentioned before, fleeing from predators. The tip of their narrow snout contains several sensitory organs that allow the animal to detect the movement of Kaburians, their favorite prey, beneath the sand. Their jaws are quite weak, but the teeth on it are dense and flat, allowing it to crush the shell of their shelled prey in order to eat it. Their broad and flat pectoral fins allow them to shake the seafloor under it, causing the resulting sand in suspension to confuse their prey and making it easier to catch. Its coloration is thought to serve the purpose of camouflaging, as their orange underbelly greatly resembles the sand of Faraterea's beaches.

Habitat[]

Slimbsharks can be sighted in the open sea rarely, but they prefer to live close to the various seashores of the planet's ocean, where they can find all the food they need.

Taxonomy[]

Slimbsharks are currently classified as cartilaginous fish in the family Lamnidae. This classification might have to be checked, though.

Their binominal name is Kokaliaricarcharias upammos. Both words come from greek, with the genus name meaning being lost (possibly means skinny shark) and the epithet meaning under the sand.
