Ktaraneartes (Rachpsittacops crestatus), also known as toknabudos or Seedcracklers, are a small rhynchocephalian species native to Rachantes.

Etymology[]

TBA

History[]

Seedcracklers appeared and evolved in the planet Rachantes. Their entire evolutionary journey is still unknown to this day, but they are thought to share a recent common ancestor with Boclypi. Some scientists, due to slight similarities between them, also suggest they are close relatives of Migrador and Exodor, but this hasn't been recognized by the whole community and the idea that they developed these traits due to convergent evolution is more widely accepted. Besides their role in the ecosystem and as pets of the Androg, they haven't participated in any historical events yet.

Biology[]

Description[]

Seedcracklers are quite small creatures, usually measuring between 20 and 40 centimeters in lenght and weighing between 30 and 70 grams.

Superficially, Seedcracklers highly resemble regular lizards, but they have some differences, with their bodies being rather stocky and their jaws resembling rounded bird beaks. They have large googly eyes and thin filaments on the back of their heads. Their four legs are short, each of them ending in three-digited feet, while their tail is rather long. They are covered in bright green scales, with some red scales located on the back of their bodies, forming a quite distinctive pattern consisting of a straight line going from the tip of the tail to the back of the head, plus a row of red spots located close to the red line on each side of the body. Their head filaments are red too.

Male and female Seedcracklers are slightly different, with the former having longer head filaments. Young Seedcracklers are quite similar to adults, but they lack the head fillaments and red spots present on them.

Traits and abilities[]

Seedcracklers are remarkably intelligent creatures; although they are nowhere near sapient level, studies have shown they are capable of survival-related problem soving and recognizing themselves on mirrors, making them almost as intelligent as Earth's corvids and great apes. They are also are fast and agile runners, thanks to their lizard-like body plan; they are not as as fast as some of their predators such as Migrador, though. They have relatively weak muscles, except for those in the hindlimbs and the jaw, and their bodies have no means of protection against hits.

One of the Seedcrackler's most remarkable traits is that it's a facultative biped: while it usually adopts a quadrupedal pose, it can stand on its two back legs and even run of them if necessary. This allows them to flee from predators faster while consuming less energy; however, their body plan only allows them to perform this for a short distance before having to use quadrupedalism again. Another remarkable ability is their capability of imitating the sounds of their enviroment, similarily to Earth's parrots. This can be helpful in the wild: if a lesser predator (eg.: a Zakren) attacks, they can mimic the sound of larger creatures (a Tauroth, for example) to scare them away; this ability, however, requires them to have heard the desired creature first, risking their lives in the process. Due to the fact that they can imitate sapient words as well, this ability has contributed to them being popular pets amongst the Androg. Although less notable, the bite of a Seedcrackler is surprisingly strong: this, combined with their hard beaks, are what allows them to break the shell of Baobus Tree seeds in order to eat them.

Taxonomy[]

Seedcrackler are currently classified as rhynchocephalians inside Opisthodontia. As they are currently the only members of the family, they have no close relatives.

Their binominal name is Rachpsittacops crestatus. The genus name means parrot face of Rachantes in greek, while the epithet means crested in latin.

Notable individuals[]

There are no known important Seedcracklers yet.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • The Seedcrackler was made to complete Rachantes' ecosytem, filling the niche of small seed-eating animal and serving as a food source for Migrador.
