Tribal Cultural Evolution Edit

Primitive Stone ToolsEdit

The first few million years of cultural evolution of species in the Avemina genus, including those ancestral to the modern Pnolthane, consisted of primitive stone tool cultures. As the forearms of ancestral Pnolthane species developed to have better power an precision grip, this allowed better production of tools. Early stone tools were made by hammering small flakes off a stone with another stone to create a sharp edge. These stone choppers were likely used to break open boned too thick to be crushed in a Pnolthane's beak in order to give access to the nutritious marrow inside. The choppers and other similar primitive tools are only found in Ezerona and are radiometrically dated to be the oldest tools manufactured, acting as the strongest evidence that the Pnolthane evolved in Ezerona and did not disperse to other parts of the planet until later.

At the time these simple tools were produced, the Pnolthane were geographically isolated to Ezerona due to the ice age that was occurring at the time. Lower global temperatures combined with the shading effect of the planet's rings near the equator created a massive wall of ice that cut off the Ezeronan penninsula from mainland Aglasia. This persisted for tens of thousands of years allowing or several distinct tool cultures made by different ancestral Pnolthane species to develope.

One ancestral species, Avemina dacharis used the abstract thinking power afforded to them by their brain which were larger and more complex than their ancestors' to select types of rock that would flake more easily than others to make their tools out of exclusively. this lead to them develping a wider range of tools such as hand axes with different shapes for scraping the meat off bones. Additionally, dacharis developed tools called lugs which were heavy stones with a sharp point at one end. These were used to kill large prey by a Pnolthane flying up a short distance and dropping the pointed end onto the head of the prey. This was a short range strategy and could only be used after the creature was cornered as the heavy lug meant that fast pursuit-flight was impossible.

Ancestral Pnolthane species were nomadic and used only the stone tools described above. This persisted for 3 million years and through much the the modern Pnolthane's history until their superior brain capacity and manipulative ability of the hand lead the development of tools make from other materials such as bone fishing hooks and bakes make from the talons and horns of megasaurs and other creatures. These tools were lighter and could be made sharper, allowing for further technological development.

AgricultureEdit

The beginning of Pnolthane civilization in its current form occurred approximately 14,000 years before the modern era. This was stimulated by the invention of agriculture which allowed nomadic Pnolthane to settle down around an area where crops were being grown and build more permanent settlements. One of the first flora farmed was a species of grass called Frugio nubes, the small seeds of which were contained in a hard outer rind. I is well accepted in the anthropological community that these seeds were eaten by heating them in the fire so that the water within the grain would boil, causing the interior of the seed to puff up and burst through the rind.

This plant and the resulting food is colloquially known as 'darch' and is still farmed and used as a major cereal grain in modern times. Evidence for large darch fields has been uncovered in Ezerona, indicating that this crop was domesticated early. Over time, through selective breeding, darch was modified by farmers to be larger, have more layers of seed and a higher seed yield and to have a larger cob.

Early CivilizationEdit

The first civilizations emerged in river valleys as these rivers would flood, allowing for agriculture to easily occur in these places. The first Pnolthane civilization to emerge was not built by the modern Pnolthane Avemina klartae but by a cousin species called Avemina cognata in the Ezerona region. Archaeologists determined that this Cognatan civilization existed for several thousand years until the cognata went extinct, likely because their brains were less complex than A. klartae and they were fewer in number and so they were out competed.

The first civilization built by Modern Pnolthane was the Alvarian civilization, named after the Alvari river around it began. The Alvarian civilization existed approximately 5000 years before modern times and persisted for several hundred years. The Alverians built small but complex cities on the edges of forested areas as creatures hunted in forests were still a crucial source of food at the time with large buildings dedicated to their Gods and leaders. The Alvarians also were the first to make important innovations such as the invention of the wheel and rudimentary mathematics. It is likely that the Alvarians had a spoken language but had no written language so it is unknown what their language was like. The Alvarians had access to copper out of which they made tools mostly used for hunting and farming as well as gold which was used as a symbol of wealth and as a direct currency with the first gold coins.

A few centuries later, around the second major river in Ezerona; the Char river, the Charan civilization arose. This civilization became more advanced than the Alvarians as time went on and was the first to develop written language in the form of markings pressed into tablets of soft clay and left to harden in the sun. This language was called Circuform and these hard record were mostly used to keep track of debts or to record important information such as laws. There was exchange of technology and culture between both river civilizations, forming trade roads between them. However, the fact that the Char river was much richer in gold than the Alvari made the Charan civilization richer.

Celestism Edit

The predominant Religion on Pnolthanus is Celestism. This religion is practiced to varying degrees of dedication by 80% of Pnolthane and is divided across several denominations varying by region. Celestism is monotheistic with Al'aria as its central deity.

Creation MythEdit

Al'aria

'Before the world', it is said that the universe was purely divine, containing only Taharah. Taharah is both the name of the realm of Al'aria and also the name of the perfect, divine white light that composes it entirely. The universe existed this way for an unspecified length of time that is described as 'an age' in the mythology until Al'aria saw that there could be more that although her self and her realm was perfect, its perfection could be increased by others experiencing it.

In the Creation Myth, Al'aria laid a single 'Cosmic Egg'. Within this egg is contained the world and surrounding stars/celestial bodies as experienced to the naked eye by the Pnolthane with Pnolthanus as the yolk and the moons as other tiny particles that float within the black albumen of the egg. Stars are said to be Taharah leaking in through the pores in the shell of the egg. The Pnolthane themselves are a mere embryonic form that will develop over time, hatching from the egg once they have reached a high enough level of social, intellectual and spiritual development, fully formed as divine creatures that will take their place with Al'aria in Taharah. The time when this happens is called 'Soaration'.

Afterlife & Significance of Celestial bodiesEdit

In Celestism, the rings of Pnolthanus are called the 'Celestial River'. One of the most fundamental beliefs to the religion is that after death, the soul or 'nila' of a dead Pnolthane will have to sail down the Celestial River to the afterlife in Gayle. Gayle is place where the next stage of life is said to take place, further preparing a Pnolthane for Soaration. As part of this belief, the Pnolthane funeral custom is to place the body in a wooden boat with provisions for the journey to Gayle and let the wind carry it over the horizon where the transition from the nila being bound to the body to independent from it takes place. On this journey, those who you have been good to in life will manifest in the boat as 'Ykri' which are projections of their essences formed from the Pnolthane's memory of them rather than their own souls or bodies being present. As many ykri as there is room for on the vessel will appear and assist the Pnolthane's nila in their journey to Gayle in proportion to how well they were treated while the Pnolthane was alive. For example, the Pnolthane's best friend or spouses will likely act as constant supporting companions while those shown kindness only on one ocasion may appear to assist with one obstacle for a few minutes. However, any people a Pnolthane has wronged in life will manifest as karmir which will act to hinder the journey in proportion to how they were harmed in life. For example, person who was stolen from once may appear to steal provisions. The exception is those who one has murdered or have died as a direct result of the Pnolthane's actions. If they made it to Gayle, they will return to the boat from Gayle to hinder the journey as powerful nila rather than karmir, likley resulting in the sinking of the boat. Those that do not make it to Gayle will simply stop existing in any form and will not be further punished but will be denied Soaration.

Gayle itself is said to be a divine city made of fine white stone on an island called Kayna Tol. The name Kayna Tol literally means "Island of the dead/ascended". In reality, Kayna Tol is the smallest and closest moon of Pnolthanus which was thought to be an island in the Celestial River by the ancient Pnolthane as the planet's only slight axial tilt means that it appears close to the rings in the sky at all times. The Island itself is said to be perfect with lush forests filled with friendly creatures and edible and useful flora and with beaches with friendly currents that carry a person to shore when they wish. Gayle is a city positioned on in the center of the island and at its highest point. The city is large with sprawling streets and and buildings, often with architecture considered to be impossible or prohibitively expensive such as "walls of solid pure silver" or "A roof of glowing tiles". The illustrious nature of Gayle serves as an additional incentive for a Pnolthane to be good in life so they are more likely to reach Kayna Tol. Gayle is ruled over by 'The Empress Eternal', a prophet of Al'aria's plan for the Pnothane

The larger but much further of the two Pnolthanian moons also plays a role in the mythology. Rekulaar is another island in the celestial river. Due to its very long orbital period of approximately one Pnolthanian year, Rekulaar has very long phases and is shaded by the planet for months at a time, invisible in the sky in the Pnolthanian spring. Rekulaar is 'full' in the sky in autumn, even though it appears as only an unusually bright star to the naked eye from the ground. However, the moon's red color means that is absorbs much of the ultraviolet light that shines on it from Karr, allowing it to easily be distinguished from a regular star by through color by the Pnolthane eye. This time also coincides with when Rekulaar appears the physically closest to the rings in the sky. In earlier spiritual beliefs, a causal connection was made between Rekulaar's greatest brightness in the sky coinciding with many trees losing their leaves, leading to the belief that Rekulaar was evil and caused death. In Celestism Rekulaar is said to be an island that is under the water of the Celestial river for most of the year. This protects all of creation from the great evil that was imprisoned on the island by Al'aria early in the worlds history. it is told that Al'aria originally created equal amounts of good and evil in the world but, as summed up in the proverb "evil breeds evil but good must be worked for", the evil quickly began to overwhelm the good and coagulated and conjugated "as evil always does" into one individual mass called Hark'tharoth that attempted to destroy the rest of creation. But, Al'aria was much more powerful and imprisoned Hark'tharoth on Rekulaar inside a giant crystal sphere called the Carcerum. Every year, Rekulaar, in the mythology, must rise above the waters of the river to release the evil pressure that builds up on the island over time as "evil breeds evil". This is used to explain why there is still evil in the world even though Al'aria vanquished Hark'tharoth. There are many stories in the Celestic holy text that tech specifi moral lessons like the dangers of being too trusting or the importance of teamwork by using a warrior of Gayle venturing to Rekulaar and being confronted by one of the many evil creatures that live there like Pseuthek the shapeshifter or Rubrumex the colossal laser-breathing dragon that guards that base of the Carcerum.

There are many complex social consequences to belief in this afterlife. The individuals likelihood of making it into the next stage of life being directly related to how they were in the first stage is reflective of the less forgiving nature of the Pnothane while concept of the karmir and nila returning to take revenge on those who wronged them in life shows the Pnolthane psychological propensity for vengefulness. Of course, this increases the amount of charity and kindness in pious societies. Also, as the size of the ship one in one's funeral is proportional to their wealth and larger ships can carry more ykri and more supplies this encourages monetary and material success in life in addition to kindness. This belief is not necessarily dissuasive of suicide, but if a person dies you they will have less ykri to help them. In many cultures societal attitudes developed where those who committed suicide were not given a boat and were simply sent out on a raft or plank, decreasint heir chance of reaching Argia and so dissuading the behaviour.

Some Pnolthane dedicate themselves fully to religious life in order to be as prepared as possible spiritually for the journey. There is rich cultural significance placed on how this journey is the ultimate trial, revealing a person as they truly are and preparing them mentally for Soaration.

OriginEdit

As for millennia, Pnoltane civilization was isolated to a very small geographical area due to the glaciation, this allowed Celestism to spread very easily among populations and quickly become the dominant religion. Celestism remained dominant in the modern world because all modern populations descended from this smaller one and over the millennia, the religion became so ingrained in the culture that alternate religions were unable to take hold. Celestism itself was developed at this time from the fusion of concepts from older spirituality as well as knew invented concepts.

This was the work of the leader of one ancient Charan citystate called Empress Charlina of Giltarah. Charlina wanted engineer the society of Giltarah to promote a greater degree of kindness between citizens to allow for greater civil peace and at the same time also promote industry and expansion of enterprise to increase the power of Giltarah against the neighboring Ezeronan city-states. Over a period of decades Charlina constructed the afterlife myth to achieve this goal, informed by a few advisers. To the general populous, she asserted that this was the true religion and that it had been divinely revealed to her by Al'aria in order to move the Giltari closer to being ready for Soaration. In order to make the claim seem more credible, Charlina incorporated the notion of the Cosmic Egg, Rekulaar's evil and Al'aria herself from an older, previous spirituality practiced in Ezerona, possibly originating in the earlier Alvarian Civilization.

Charlina was held up by the people as a prophet, the increase in her control and influence over the populous leading to her conducting missions to to neighboring city-states to spread the faith and as a result, her control over them. Eventually, driven insane with both power and paranoia that the truth about the faith would be discovered, Charlina ordered the execution of any of the advisers who worked with her in developing the religion and then eventually killed herself, the last remaining person who knew of the truth to cement the religion forever. This was conveyed to the people by the high members of the clergy out of necessity as Charlina "Having accomplished her maximum divine duty in the world, having no further place here and ascending across the Celestial river, supported by the ykri of thousands". This is when the idea of the Empress Eternal was created with Charlina assuming the role in doctrine to further teach and carry Al'aria's will to the nila of all Pnolthane in the afterlife. In many modern Pnolthane cultures, the date of Chalina's ascension is celebrated as a holiday although it shifted over the centuries to the winter time to be more seasonally convenient.

To suit the new religion, Charlina ordered the construction of a massive temple. In the many chambers of this temple, the basic tenants and myths of Celestism were carved into tablets on the walls, making them permanent. The temple was heavily decorated with gold both to show the wealth of the nation but also the importance of the religion to them when seen by neighboring states. The temple remains a popular destination for many Pnolthane to visit in modern times to see the beginnings of Celestism and is one of the most sacred and protected sites on the planet. The Chronicle inscribed in the temple was then transcribed and re-transcribed into book form over later centuries to make it easier to transport. This, along with numerous translations lead to the exact letter and sometimes meaning of the myths to change by region as the Pnolthane dispersed throughout the Aglaisian continent and later after the planet warmed and the ice wall receded.


Gender & Sexuality Edit

Gender RolesEdit

Traditionally, Pnolthane societies have been matriarchal as female Pnolthane are larger, stronger and live much longer than the males. However, the traditional gender role for a female was still to stay at home and take care of the eggs and house as incubation takes up a significant amount of time. There, she would often be semi-served by her husbands as she is the dominant individual in the household.
As there are twice as many male as female Pnolthane born, their traditional gender role is to act as those who go out and hunt or gather, or in later societies work basic jobs or fight. This is because Pnolthane psychology evolved to see them as semi-disposable and so more suitable for dangerous jobs while the female is more valuable and so stays home and takes care of the important task of incubating the eggs.
Although far less prominent for most modern Pnolthane, this traditional gender dynamic permeates much of Pnolthane culture. Still in many parts of Pnolthanus, individuals at top positions such as leaders of countries or CEOs or companies are usually female both because of the social factors behind this tradition and also because female brains are inherently wired to be more adept at leadership because of their evolution.

SexualityEdit

The Pnolthane mating season is called Avina and takes place during the Pnolthanus Spring for a few months. Only during this time is it possible for individuals to release gametes and lay fertilized eggs as during other times of the year, the hormones that cause the cloacae to be engorged will not be released. Due to the relatively short nature of this mating season, many Pnolthane typically have between one and three children in any one year and then never have any additional children. This means that Pnolthane libido during the other times of the year is negligible, meaning that sexuality does not permeate the culture and media at this time in things like advertising. However, during Avina, the Pnolthane libio increases greatly to promote mating during this critical time. This leads to sexual iconography flooding the culture during this time. Although it varies greatly by individual culture, the general Pnolthane attitude towards sex is conservative during time outside Alvina and then far more liberal during the period.

Alvina itself is a holiday in many cultures with it's own iconography and traditions apart from its biological purpose. Male Pnolthane reach sexual maturity in half the time of a female. This means that generationally, Pnolthane males tend to breed with females born ten years earlier, leading to a difference in the length of the 'maternal' and 'paternal' generation. As a male will typically breed with a female of the previous paternal generation, this means a female is more likely to mate with the son of a male born at the same time as her than the male born at the same time.

Documented History Edit

CalendarEdit

One solar year on Pnolthanus lasts 669.3 Earth days or 572 Pnolthanian days; each Pnolthanian day being 28 hours long. However, as Pnolthanus has a very slight axial tilt of only 6 degrees, the planet has very mild seasons and so the seasonal changes at different points of the year are difficult to notice. A much more obvious circannual rhythym is the orbit of Rekulaar which takes 571.6 Pnolthanian days. This lead historical Pnolthanian Calendars to be based on Rekulaar's alignment with the rings and not Pnolthanus' actual position around its orbit. This old lunar calendar sets its start as the founding of Celestim in ancient times(0 PLC).

Pnolthane Calendar

The small differences between the orbital periods meant that the Planet would have only completed 62 orbits for every 100 lunar years. Several thousand years before modern times, because of more advanced astronomy and mathematics, this discrepancy was noticed. A superpower at the time, the Archoli Empire mandated that a new calendar must be created for their empire to follow. This was approximately 2295 true solar years after the founding of Celestism but the date by the lunar calendar was 2302. This new calendar followed the true solar year and divided the year into 13 months of 44 days each. This was based on the observable phases of Kayna Tol which take 44 Pnolthanian days for a full cycle. Each month is divided into four eleven day weeks. Each week is divided into a period of 3 days of work followed by 1 day of rest and then another 4 days of work followed by 3 days of rest. However, in modern times what each day is actually used for is highly variable. The abbreviation used for the Pnolthanian calendar by other races is PC. As a Pnolthanian year is actually 572.05 days long, every 20 years an extra day is added to the calendar. This day is not part of any month and falls right at the end of the year. Symbolically, this day, called 'Generations Day' is supposed to celebrate the accomplishments of the past generation and also to reflect on their mistakes.

Development of TechnologyEdit

Although the Pnolthane have used artificial gliders to aid their flying ability for centuries, the first powered flight occured in 3679 PC. One inventor named Arlina Thane designed and built the first aircraft using steam powered engines while her two husbands Orn and Dori Thane piloted the craft for a distance of 500 meters.

Beginning in the 3680's was the first Mechanical Revolution where automated, steam-based machinery started to see real popularity. This created a population boom from 400 million to 800 million in only a few decades. This period also saw great technological innovation such as the land-based vehicles becoming widespread, taking over from carriages puled by megasaurs.

Project Century was a government initiative in the powerful Aglaisian state of Thrallus to send a person into space. In 3732 PC the first orbit of Pnolthanus was completed by ouranaught Dravin Chater and over the subsequent few years, several more orbits and launching of the first satellites were completed. This was the dawn of the Pnolthane presence in space.

The Orbit WarEdit

The presence of Thrallus in orbit motivated another superpower, the Zaxian state of Alabaxa, to also make it's own efforts towards presence in space in order to prevent Thrallus gaining a large military advantage over it. Alabaxa launched its own first orbital mission in 3734 PC. Over the next few years, presence in space kept increasing with the culture in many of the countries below entering a massive 'space craze'.

In 3740 PC the Thrallian government sent a mining operation to the rings in order to collect the valuable platinum, iridium and palladium in high concentrations in some of the rocky bodies. At the time, Zaxia was a continent of very fundamentalist Celestic church-states and so, as they considered the rings holy under Celestism, they considered this an obscene act.

Thazara III

This escalated hostilities between Thrallus and Alabaxa that had always existed due to stark denominational differences, most of Aglaisian states like Thrallus being far less fundamentalist. The empress of Alabaxa at the time, Thazara III secretly began plotting against the Thrallian government and increasing her military power.

In 3743 PC Thrallus announced the first mission to another world; Kayna Tol. This was the last straw for Thazara as Kayna Tol is the holiest place in Celestism, second only to Taharah. She ordered her secret service to sabotage the rocket, the Asveste before it launched. Her attempt was successful and this caused the empress of Thrallus to declare war on Alabaxa.

Quickly, many allies of Thrallus in both Aglaisia and Norra entered the war while Alabaxa's Zaxian allies and its own Norran allies entered. As both sides had allies on the Norran continent, this was a hotbed for many battles where many lives on both sides were lost. On land, battles were fought using large numbers of male ground troops, often with mounts as well as with armored steam locomotives. Both the military flamethrower and steam-powered machine gun were invented during this war. Ground troops were armed with rifles as well as bladed weapons which were still common at this time as well as larger but immovable guns.

Large steamships were deployed into the oceans, especially in the oceans between Norra and Zaxia and Between Aglaisia and Norra. These ships were more heavily armed and, later in the war carried missiles adapted from the same technology used to build space rockets. Some ships were large enough to host entire bays of aircraft that could be launched for aerial combat. Aerial combat was intense as Pnolthane aircraft technology at the time was relatively advanced and could include very large aircraft that hosted entire armies and were armed to the teeth with guns and missiles.

Combat also took place in space as both sides already had substantial orbital infrastructure. Although the personal in space were relatively few, many radio controlled satellites were regularly used. These satellites were used for many things such as spying on the enemy, communication and disrupting enemy communication. Additionally, many were fitted with weapons that could disable enemy satellites or target installations on the ground with "Rods from God". There were a few space stations constructed by both sides that acted as command centers in space that could launch mobile pods that could freely move around orbit, not constrained by only one path. The nature of this space warfare left many stalemates that lengthened the war.

The war lasted for 6 Pnolthanian years (11 earth years) and totaled a death count of 20 million people, 4% of the planets population. The fighting ended when Thrallian allied troops made it into the Alabaxan capital after Thazara was killed by orbital bombardment. A council followed where Alabaxa and its allies were forced to pay large sums for what they had cost Aglaisia in the war. Another stipulation was that any of the participating enemy states must have a secular government and had to introduce a seperation between church and state.

The aftermath of the war was dire with Norra in ruins and Zaxia in massive debt to Aglaisia. The separation between church and state became only a technicality on Zaxia with many countries behaving exactly as they did before, only with less power due to the greater poverty. It would take nearly a century for most of the world to rebuild.

3750's to 3800'sEdit

After the end of the Orbit war in 3749 PC, much rebuilding of infrastructure an economy needed to occur in all parts of the world. This put non-military space travel on hold due to its great cost although, with their victory in the war, Thrallus was able to keep its economy afloat by mining the precious metals found in the rings. Soon, other states began to follow suite and by the 3760's, most of the world's economies had recovered.

During this period, the continent of Geltia in the southern hemisphere became less of a frontier with many colonies declaring their independence from their Aglaisian and Torrenian parent states. Sometimes, these were peaceful occurrences but there were a few small wars fought for succession. This lead to a few small colonies on the continent becoming a whole array of young countries.

In 3763, the first landing on Kayna Tol was accomplished by an a collection of Alaisian states called ALUS (Aglaisian League of United States). This allience formed in the wake of the war initially to act as a defensive agreement but then later evolved into a trade union with a united currency called the Golna. LAEC (League Aerospace Exploration Commission) is the League's space agency and was responsible, through funding from many nations, for the first Kaynan landing and 11 subsequent missions over the next 30 years. A defensive alliance called the Zaxian Defensive Pact also formed in Zaxia bringing some order to the many states there after decades of small-scale infighting and hostilities.

In a country on the Continent of Torren called Dijor, the fist experiments with nuclear fission power and weaponry were taking place in the late 3780's. During this time, large radio telescopes were also constructed as the was renewed interest in finding extraterrestrial life in both the culture and the scientific community. By the end of the 3780's there was a substantial presence on both moons of Pnolthanus with a number of permanent colonies and probes that had been sent to Kiatone, Ostikar and Altarus. At this point, the Pnolthane were an early Tier 6 civilization.

First ContactEdit

In 3803, Pnolthane astronomers received a mysterious radio signal while an array of radio telescopes was pointed at a binary star system called Kijani. Kijani was considered a low priority target for finding extraterrestrial life as it was assumed at the time that life could not form around a binary star system. Upon analysis, it was revealed that the signal contained a sequence of prime numbers. This, as a clear marker that there was some kind of intelligence behind the signal caused upheaval in the scientific community. When it was announced to the public, this caused a cultural revolution with aliens appearing all across media and wild speculation about who or what could have sent the message. This event came to be known as 'The Signal'

Soonafter, a reply message was broadcast, although it would not finish crossing the 8 lightyear distance between the stars for quite some time. In early 3808, a second signal was received by astronomers. This signal contained more detailed information, including visual. Most of the contents of this visual information was a series of measurements and associations between numerical quantities and simple symbols. The scientists assigned to the project by the government, after much deliberation, decided this to be an alien numbering system. Among the measurements give was the radius of the hydrogen atom, further evidence that the alien species were intelligent and technological, as well as the distance between Karr and Kijani. This caused excitement as it was evidence that the message was sent specifically for the Pnolthane which possibly implied that they had received the original reply message. Also contained within the visual data of the 'Second Signal' was a series of complex images. These were difficult to decode but scientists reasoned that they must be images from the world of the aliens. Among these images were what appeared to be an orbital image of the alien planet, various pictures of its surface and an image of a tall, many legged creature with a multi-lobed head. Any detail past this base information was undecodable from the visual data at the time.

The Pnolthane, after a few months of deliberation and organization immediately sent another reply message containing similar detail. An image of a Pnolthane female and a Pnolthane male was also sent. This move was controversial as many decades of media had portrayed extraterrestrials, even before The Signal, as evil invaders. This lead many to assume, without evidence, that the senders of the signal were hostile. The culture began to refer to the senders of the signal as 'decapods' from the fact the the alien in the image sent appeared to have 6 legs and 4 arms. At the beginning of 3818 The Third Signal was received by the Pnolthane scientists. This signal had even more complex mathematical information within it that could not be decoded at the time. Signals and replies like this continued for the next few decades. The rate at which signals were sent also increased with new signals being received before the reply to the previous had even reached Kijani. In 3823 PC, between the Fourth and Fifth Signal, an elite decoder team finally figured out what the mathematical data from the Third Signalwas for. The data was intended to be used to make decoding future messages easier and possible to a higher degree of detail by matching the frequency of decoding with the frequency and resolution that the original message was encoded with.

This information was applied to the visual data from The Second Signal in similar data in subsequent transmissions which allowed more data to be gleaned from the signals. it was discovered that what appeared to be the decapod's upper set of arms was actually a pair of eyestalks and that the heads of the aliens were brightly colored. perhapse the most shocking revelation about the aliens was that they appeared to be sentient plants with a large flower as a head and movable roots which were walked upon. This was highly unanticipated by the scientific community and called into question what forms life could take other than the familiar. 8 This new discovery greatly increased the speed at which transmissions were sent and as a result, effort began to be made to understand the alien language, or at least let Pnolthane computers understand the language. As it was unlikely that a Pnolthane would be able to actually make the sounds that composed the alien language, Pnolthane scientists decided to assign random Pnolthane characters and verbal sounds to the symbols that came in later transmissions to produce words that sounded coherent and were easy to reference. A few sonds that are unpronounceable to the Pnolthane but are easy for a computer to produce such as "V", "B" and "M" sounds were also used. From this, the Pnolthane learned that the closest approximation of what the aliens were called was the 'Virloyds'.

In 3831 PC, the first experiments with Deuterium-Tritium fusion were taking place. Around this time, the leadership of the now larger and much better funded LAEC decided to begin planning to send a ship to Kijani, or as it was now known by its Virloyd name, the Virlisia System. It was decided that sending a manned ship would be far superior to an unmanned probe as a Pnolthane crew could gather exponentially more data and could react to unanticipated situation, which there were assumed to be many of in such a mission. A transmission was sent to the Virloyds to ask permission for such an endevour and after nearly 10 years, their reply came.
At the tail end of 3839 PC, construction on the massive ship began. massive funding from LAEC poured into research on fusion technology was yielding positive results and the first experimental fusion reactor was constructed in 3840. This was a marker that the Pnolthane had entered Tier 5 as a civilization.

The UAS Godwit.

The UAS Godwit was completed in 3842 PC. The ship was equipped with three pulse thrusters that were capable of accelerating the ship to 10% of c. This meant that the journey to the Virlisia System would take just over 80 Earth years or 46 Pnolthane years. The very long duration of this journey meant that the ship had to be designed to support a reasonably large crew of scientists, language experts and diplomats for nearly half a century and so was built very large with a rotating ring to support artificial gravity. The ship was equipped with a receiver dish and so could recive communications from Pnolthanus throughout the journey, although as the Godwit approached its target the communications were more and more delayed. The crew of the Godwit was all female out of necessity since the female lifespan of 66 years would allow for a well trained Pnolthane woman of 14 to embark on the mission with a margin of over 8 years at the other end. The male lifespan at the time was only 33 years which would mean any male crew members would die on the journey. The ship was commanded by Captain Trelani Arkis.

In 3885 PC, the Godwit arrived in the Virlisian system. The ships docked at a purpose-built spaceport in orbit around one of the system's gas giants called Dandaelis where the crew were taken into quarantine before they could be biologically evaluated to be safe for exposure to Virloyd society. Over the proceeding decades, translation between the two species languages was virtually perfected as linguists were immersed in Virloyd society. Only 7 years after the launch of the Godwit, the Virloyd's own similar ship, the Nucifera was launched towards Pnolthanus with a much larger crew of Virloyds. This, along with the three other ships similar to the Godwit that were launched during its 50 year journey marked the true start of the interstellar age.

3890's to 3930'sEdit

A mass exchange of cultural and scientific knowledge lead to many great leaps in technology on both sides of the Interstellar Void. For example, Pnolthane computer technology was far more advanced than Virloyd while the Virloyds possessed superior space infrastructure. Scientific collaboration on both sides gradually improved the pulse engine technology that propelled the first interstellar ships. the rate of improvement meant that on ship launched a few decades into the journey of another would be traveling faster and the exponential nature of this rate meant that the sixth ship sent by the Pnolthane actually arrived months before the fifth.

Communication between the worlds was still limited to nearly 9 Pnolthanian years for a reply message. At the dawn of the 40th century, in 3903 PC, esperiments with powerful particle accelerators revealed strange results attempting to measure the planck energy. The value measured was much smaller than what was predicted by the theoretical models. Aditionally, in 3917 PC, gravitational physicists found that gravity was much weaker when approaching the planck-scale and appeared to follow an inverse-cubed relationship with distance rather than the inverse-squared relationship observed on much larger scales. These results were puzzling to the physicists at the time but no solution to reconcile the two measurements with existing models or each other could be found. However, in 3921 PC a male Pnolthane physicist from the Federated States of Ga'tor in the now thriving continent of Geltia called Orthis Tar'kis made an important discovery. he was able to mathematically reconcile the two measurements by assuming there was an additional dimension curled up at the planck length. These measurment discontinuities became the first evidence for the existence of Hyperspace. Tar'kis dedicated his life's work to Hyperspace and wrote many texts on it including theoretical applications. One of his ideas, as a way to communicate faster than light, caught the attention of LAEC who hired him to head a team that would research the idea full-time. One of the requirements of such an application would be the creation of microscopic black holes that would, through Hawking Radiation, yield planck-energy photons to open portals into Hyperspace.

The means to create such energy densities did not yet exist as antimatter production was still in it's infancy. However, after the death of Tar'Kis in 3932 PC, improvements in particle accelerator technology mean that a large enough quantity of anitmatter could be manufactured and stored. This antimatter reaquired as much energy to create as it released and so was not an energy source unto itself but was a means to release a very large amount of energy very quickly. In 3935 PC, first portal was successfully opened at IEP (International Hyperspace Experimental Project) in Torren using a device similar to a modern Gestirn Cell powered by an antimatter reactor.

The project continued with the first test signals being sent through soon after. Nearly five years after the opening of the first portal, the first faster-than-light signal ever was received on Virlisia using a device similar to the modern Hyperspace TRAN.

Further experiments yielded the surprising result that some of the particles in this fog in fact had negative mass. it had long been theorized that negative mass could be used to warp spacetime to allow a vessel to travel faster than light and the discovery of Hyperspace greatly lowed the estimated mas needed to accomplish this. In 3953 LC, LAEC began a mission called Sylph higher concentrations of this exotic matter were detected in the outer reaches of the Pnolthanian system. At this point, the Pnolthane had very substantial space infrastructure and so the construction of a large facility to extract exotic matter for study was possible.

The facility was built on a medium sized planetoid called Skadi and was equipped with an array of gestirn cells as well as it's own fusion reactor and particle accelerator for producing its own antimatter to power the cells. Study of the exotic matter produced by the Sylph facility lead to confirmation that the substance could likely be used to create a superluminal ship. The prompted LAEC to begin development on such a craft.

After 22 years, in late 3974 PC, development on the project had been completed and enough exotic matter gathered for the first test flight of the UPS Peregine. Constant contact with the Virloyds over the many decades meant that by this time, most of the international hostilities on the planet had greatly weakened and the Pnolthane were much more unified as one Planet of people. The UPS Peregrine could travel at drive factor 0.37 which equates to an effective velocity of 1.4c. The ship held a crew of 80 Pnolthane for it's first journey to the Virloyds which it succeeded in, arriving at Virlisia at the very beginning of 3977 PC. Lifetime Edit

ChildhoodEdit

Both female and male Pnolthane learn to walk, talk an fly by the age of 20 months. Both sexes start primary education by the age of 2 where they learn basic reading, writing and mathematical skills. Primary education ends around the age of 3 and a half. From this point forward, childhood is somewhat different for the two sexes due to different rates of development. In modern times, these schools usually educate both genders in the same environment.

Males enter adolescence soon after this time but females continue their education in childhood until the age of 6 and a half.

AdolescenceEdit

Male Pnolthane begin adolescence around the age of 3 which continues until they are fully developed adults at the age of 7. Through this time, male Pnolthane continue through middle and secondary education, usually focusing on practical and life skills more so than theoretical knowledge due to how quickly males enter the working world. Female Pnolthane have a longer adolescence spanning between the age of 5 and a half and the age of 12. During this time, the female education also continues but as it's much longer, contains more conceptual and theoretical learning.

In modern times, almost all males go into further education as adults to learn the same concepts taught to females during their longer childhood. This helped to equalize the genders in terms of education and ability in the workplace.

Symbolism Edit

As the Pnolthane can have ultra-violet light, they have color symbolism for colors that cannot be seen by other species. This can change the connotation of an icon for a Pnolthane even if there is no obvious change for a member of a trichromatic species.

To a trichromatic species, Pnolthane blood appears green due to its nickel basis. However, the Phosphides in the blood allow it to also reflect ultra-violet light and so it appears karak to the Pnolthane. The Pnolthane evolved psychologically so that karak became associated with danger which meant that icons that stood for "No" or "Stop" were typically made this color. Yellow has the opposite meaning of karak and is used to symbolize good and so used in icons that mean "Go" or "Yes". This is due to the fact that many of the important plants around the Pnolthane when they were evolving were Xanthophyllic and so had permanently yellow leaves, allowing the color to be associated with nature.

Green has a completely different connotation to karak to the Pnolthane. The color is strongly associated with the foliage of plants, which do not reflect ultra-violet light. This lead the color to have haling connotations and to be a symbol of relationships, especially familial or marital ones. To species that cannot see ultra-violet, green appears exactly the same as karak which could lead to some confusion in signage and icons. In modern times, the Pnolthane often vary texture or pattern on the color to assist other species they live alongside.

White is associated with purity while black is associated with chaos and death. Tahar is considered a higher tier of purity and 'true white' to the Pnolthane as it is composed of all four visible primary colors. It is also associated with divinity, being the color of Taharah.

Pnolthane language is of course, heavily impacted by the fact that they have beaks. As a result, no language on Pnolthanus contains any consonants that require lip movement such as 'B', 'M' or 'F' sounds. Additionally, most Pnolthane languages contain click consonants are these are easier to produce with the tongue against the hard surface of the beak. In modern times, there are two widely spoken languages between Pnolthane. International Pnolthanian is a language that evolved over time from previous Aglaisian languages and fills the role of a universal language for the species. United Zaxian is largely only spoken on the Zaxian continent and features the letters 'X' and 'Z' for more frequently than languages outside the continent.

Words in the Pnolthane languages consist of circles with symbols placed around the perimeter that represent syllables, these syllables are read anti-clockwise around the circle. Each syllable is made up of one large vowel circle with preceding consonants, called 'forward', on the inside of the word circle and consonants that fall after the vowel, called 'rear', in the syllable drawn much smaller on the outside of the word circle. Words with only two syllables are read bottom syllable first and then top syllable. Each symbol is rotated so that the top of the symbol is closest to the center of the word circle and the ending consonants always fall outside. Many rear consonants many be appear very small but the increased sharpness of Pnolthane vision is able to distinguish them where other species cannot.

Vowel Families

The four vowel families and the English letters they correspond to.

Vowels themselves fall into 4 'vowel families' where a basic symbol is modified to make slight variations on the same basic vowel sound.
One modification that can be made is to draw a second, slightly smaller copy of the same vowel circle in side the first. This has the effect of lengthening the sound. For example, drawin a second 'A' Circle inside the first will change the vowel from the short 'A' in 'Trap' to the long second 'A' in 'Apartment'.

Saanthousa

Saanthousa, the IP word for prostitute, contains a double vowel, an 'aʊ̯' dipthong and a shortened 'A'

A second vowel modification is the addition of a small diacritic dot on the edge of the vowel circle. The placement of this dot is linguistically irrelevant but it is considered formal to place the dot on the top of the vowel. With standardization that came with computers, all electronic vowels appear this way. The addition of this mark acts to shorten the vowel sound. For example, turning the 'O' sound in 'Cloth' into the 'O' sound in 'Book'
Some changes of vowel sound are caused by the presence of specific consonants and not actual modification to to vowel circle, the different sound is simply inferred. Such examples include the addition of a rear 'R' after a 'U' changing 'Cuss' into 'Curse' where the R is not actually pronounced but instead changes the sound. This also occurs for the 'O' family where the additon of the rear 'R' changes 'Pot' into 'Port'.
Dipthongs are grouping of two distinct vowel sounds that are pronounced one after each other so they sound like one. Example of this include the 'OI' in 'Boil' or even the 'A' in 'Ape' which is technically a combination of a long 'A' and short 'E' sound. Sometimes, a vowel circle will be pronounced this way arbitrarily, or by the presence of other letters in the word that modify the pronunciation of the vowel but not it's appearance. Other times, as with the dipthong 'OI', these dipthongs can be created by overlaying one vowel circle over another, the larger one being the vowel sound that is pronounced first.

Consonant IPA

Ykri

Ykri contains a consonant blend.

The symbols for some consonants fall into pairs for sounds that are produced by the same mouth movement but have different voicing such as 'T' and 'D'. Whether the consonant is voiced is denoted by a small arch drawn at the base of the symbol.
In order to blend consonants together to make sounds like the 'CR' in 'Crab' the two consonants involved are simply drawn smaller with the first further anti-clockwise than the second. If a word contains no hind consonants, the vowel circles my be drawn so that they fall completely inside the word circle.

Most Pnolthane languages also contain click consonants, although usually they are as rare as an 'X' or 'Z' in English. These clicks can only fall at the start of a syllable and never at the end. The symbols for the clicks are based on where in the mouth the tongue must be moves to make the desired click.
The post-alveolar click (represented in IPA by '!') is the loudest click in any Pnolthane language. This click is produced with the tongue against the roof of the mouth as if imitating the sound of a horse trotting and so the symbol has a small dot at the top of the glyph.
The Dental click is performed using the tongue on the back of the front curved point on the beak and so has the dot in the center of the glyph. This is the click used when tutting in disapproval and is represented by the IPA symbol 'ǀ' in English.
The third kind of click that appears in Pnolthane languages is that which is made at the side of the beak, the alveolar lateral. This is represented in English by the IPA symbol 'ǁ' and is the same sound that is used to call an animal towards a person quickly.

Taharah

The last syllable in Taharah is modified with the breathy voice.

A pseudo-consonant called the glottal stop also appears in Pnolthane languages. This is represented by a line that is drawn from the perimeter of the word circle towards the center in between the two syllables that the stop occurs between. The sound is similar to the momentary pause in the word 'uh-oh'. There are a number of pseudo-vowels that appear also existing as a version of the normal vowel sounds but said with a more breathy voice. This can occur for almost any true vowel as long as there are no consonants after the vowel in the syllable and so is denoted by a diacritic hollow circle on the on the inside of the word circle, directly clockwise-adjacent to the modified vowel circle.

Sentences are read starting at the top of a sentence and working downward and from the right side of the page to the left. Punctuation in Pnolthane languages is minimal although marks at the start and end of sentences are used to mark them as questions or quotes. A small hollow circle is used at the bottom of a sentence to mark its end if none of these marks are used. A consequence of this reading direction coupled with the shape of three syllable words is that such words almost form an arrow pointing in the direction of reading. This lead to the three circle symbol being used to point out direction in non-linguistic situations such as on street markings.

Daily Life Edit

CuisineEdit

Pnolthane cuisine is heavily influenced by the fact that the Pnolthane have sharp beaks rather than mouths with teeth. A Pnolthane meal will usually consist of two smaller courses followed by a desert although eating customs vary greatly by culture.

The first course is usually made up of raw or cooked vegetbles or fruits. On impact on the Pnolthane beak on the cuisine is that leafy vegetable are almost completely absent due to them being difficult to chew. Root vegetables are common however and one root, the Leola, forms a stable part of the Torrenian diet. Meat is usually kept separate from this course.

The second course is usually made up almost entirely of meat and protein rich foods. The Pnolthane beak is sharp, allowing large pieces of meat to be consumed without utensils. It is common for meat to be eaten raw or even alive with a type of small lizard, the Maddit, commonly being eaten whole as a snack. Protein rich nuts, such as the Koklo nut, are also common in this course and are often paired with meat to ad flavor and texture variation.

Grain products and carbohydrates form a relatively small part of the Pnolthane diet and are found in both courses. Flour is most commonly made from Sax although can be commonly made from other cereal crops such as Maxai bulbs in Zaxia or Leida Grass in Torren. Flour is mixed with water to make a dough which is then stimulated to rise by bacteria. Since these bacteria an anaerobic, the the dough is sealed in an airtight container and left to culture of time. After a certain amount of time the dough will be released, fully aerated and baked. Some doughs are kept sealed for decades where other microbes further transform it, often leading to the resulting bread having intoxicating properties.

The dessert course of a Pnolthane meal will not always be sweet. Often, dishes containing large amounts of salt and oils such as stacks of deep wafers of root vegetable will be served. These satisfy the Pnolthane craving for salt brought on by their high sodium requirement.Rare desserts such as on Hatching day celebrations will also incorporate new gizzard stones into the food as these need to be occasionally replaced. This is a common way to prompt very young Pnolthane into swallowing the otherwise difficult stones.

In modern times, many Pnolthane chefs attempt to replicate dished made by other species using ingredients appropriate for Pnolthane consumption. These dished are called Xenosine are are most popular on colonies or spaceports such as Gayle
