“Sharp. If I were to describe the Libertus in one word, it would be this one. Their minds are as their talons: piercing, deadly, precise instruments of good or evil... like blades. It is no coincidence that they have always been at the spearhead of all great movements in the galaxy. They would not have been great otherwise.”

The Libertus are a race of sentient maniraptora native to Cyrannus Galaxy. Originating from Capricaerón, the Libertus have since spread across the First Gigaquadrant, generally earning them a reputation as peaceful, cultured and progressive beings seemingly born with a desire to explore and expand across the cosmos. A highly intelligent race, since the early days of their earliest civilisations on Capricaerón, they have grown a pronounced distaste for violence and have instead earned a reputation as diplomats and compromisers.
Nevertheless, they have been at the forefront of Cyrannian politics for many millennia being instrumental in the creation of superpowers such as the First, Second and Third Republics, as well as the Galactic Empire of Cyrannus. Though they reside primarily in the Cyrannus Galaxy, Libertus have since made their mark on the universe in many notable ways, from rebuilding the universe in the aftermath of the War of Ages to protecting order and stability in the Seven Starr Alliance.
Physiologically, Libertus are lean, endothermic and lightly feathered and are among the most intelligent races in the Gigaquadrant. Modern scientists believe that the Libertus are members of a group known as Capricyránae, which includes Basileus and Cavaneu. Most Libertus however find more in common with alien races such as the Rambo Serindia, due to the cultural similarities and appreciation for peace, order and diplomacy. However, they are not a homogeneous species, with some Libertus being elitist and arrogant, though these make up a minority in what is generally quite an enlightened species.
Native to the temperate forests of Capricaerón, the Libertus evolved as the apex predators of their continent, using their swift and agile physiology, as well as their high degree of intelligence to hunt and kill prey. Equipped with razor-sharp teeth, a killing claw on each foot and a top speed of up to seventy kilometres per hour at full sprint, these early Libertus were almost perfectly evolved for hunting and killing. Modern paleontologists believe that early Libertus lived and operated in packs, which eventually became more and more advanced as the Libertus continued to evolve.
It was believed that during this time in their evolution, many Libertus specimens were transported across the Gigaquadrant by the unseen hand of the Oikoumene populating the other worlds in Capricaerón's system as well as giving birth to dozens of different subspecies across the galaxy. The most notable of these groups were planted on the Cyrannian Core World of Conkobol, where they spread across the interior of Cyrannus, populating worlds such as Orbispira and Corulus, and establishing the First Republic. This group of Libertus would eventually fade into obscurity, though many modern Libertus in the wider galaxy can trace their ancestry back to the ancient Conkoboli Libertus.
Over time, packs on Capricaerón became tribes and tribes became cities. When the Age of Technology arrived, the Libertus had relatively few conflicts between rival civilisations. However, a terrorist group managed to construct a nuclear device and used it against the city Delphi in opposition to the growing levels of political unification between the planet's superpowers. However, this act of savagery ultimately resulted in an escalation of political unification which occurred at a much quicker pace than in other civilised species despite the high levels of cultural differences that existed between different Libertus factions. Over the next century, these early Capricaerónns began to expand into space where they encountered the independent Libertus states of Twelve Colonies.
Not all of the interaction between these colonies were peaceful, with the colonies only unifying when diplomats from the Federation of United Worlds aided in the creation of Capricorn Sector Alliance, which in turn became instrumental in the creation of the United Republic of Cyrannus. Joining the galactic community, these Capricaerónn Libertus became reunited with their distant brothers and sisters who were transplanted millennia ago by the Oikoumene. Expanding outwards into the universe, the Libertus became one of the most recognisable and respected races across the cosmos, establishing millions of colonies and aiding in the development of an interconnected First Gigaquadrant.
Society, Culture and Behaviour

Like all spacefaring species, Libertus culture varies drastically from world to world, or even from region to region, though even among their counterparts, the Libertus are a particularly diverse species—resultant from millennia of sentient history, and ubiquity throughout their native Cyrannus. Highly social creatures, the fossil record of Capricaerón shows that even in the earliest days of their evolution, Libertus associated with one another through large family packs, made up of potentially dozens of individuals from several different familial units. As they evolved, such packs eventually coalesced into more advanced sapient societies, which spread across the planet. As they became a spacefaring species and spread across the galaxy, they acquired a reputation among other species as being particularly xenophilic, rarely associating with other Libertus in a monospecies society. As such, xenophobia is exceedingly rare in Libertus, particularly when compared to related species such as the Basileus.
Rather than by species, Libertus typically organise on the basis of their location, and thus seek solidarity with individuals from the same world, or galactic region. This unifying property is tied with Libertusi involvement in the formation of vast multi-species organisations and governments, and the subsequent development of the concept of a galactic government of Cyrannus as the predominant form of Cyrannian political organisation since the dawn of the First Republic. While this attitude has avoided the emergence of discrimination on the basis of ethnicity or species, it has given rise to the creation of social identities which Libertus can use to compare, or compete against. For example, some Core World Libertus, particularly adherents of High Culture, can view the outer regions of Cyrannus as fundamentally unsophisticated, while a Libertus native to the Inner, Mid or Outer Rim may view a Core World Libertus as pampered and superficial.
Historically, Libertus xenophilism has given rise to a distinct preference for liberal democratic forms of government, on planetary, galactic and intergalactic scale. The most notable exception to this rule has been the Galactic Empire of Cyrannus, which rose in the aftermath of the Great Cyrannus War, and counts the Libertus-dominated Core Worlds as its central territory. Nevertheless, most Libertus in Cyrannus have a distinct preference for the New Cyrannian Republic, which embodies the ancient democratic tradition of the Libertus. Culturally, the Libertus are adverse to violence and warfare, and do not commingle well with more aggressive species. However, their ancient predatory nature has instead been translated into a proclivity toward politics, which is practised in all Libertus group interactions, to varying degrees. As such, cunning and quickness of wit are valued traits among the Libertus.
Naturally as a result of the division of Libertus into the male and female sex, gender roles in Libertus society emerged early in their history, though rarely do such roles extend beyond dress and certain norms. Some human scientists have speculated that the lack of sexism or homophobia in Libertus society is resultant from a less active sex drive, though the source of such enlightened views can likely be found in the longevity of Libertus as a sentient species. Indeed, while male and female Libertus are easily distinguishable by their dress and behaviour, across Libertus society, both hold equal standing in status, power and rights under the law. While most Libertus exhibit predominantly female-to-male attraction, very few are solely attracted to members of a single sex. As such, a significant minority exhibit preference for male-to-male or female-to-female relationships. Due to their xenophilic nature, many Libertus are attracted to members of alien species, though such feelings often result from emotional fondness, rather than true sexual attraction. Libertus, like humans, often engage in sexual activity for recreation, rather than solely for reproductive purposes.
Libertus exhibit great biological variation from world to world, with no two members being identical. Their ability to adapt to their surroundings and environmental stresses has given rise to a great number of subspecies since they became spacefaring, with a Heleanorian Libertus exhibiting widely different physical attributes to a Cyrannian counterpart. Similarly, though on a lesser scale, Libertus native to Capricaerón are typically brown in colour, while those native to Scorpiae are often green. Such variations typically correlate to the level of ultraviolet radiation in a particular region, or world.

Biology and Appearance
Defined as the species Caprisaurus libertus, and specifically as the Capricaerónan subspecies Caprisaurus libertus caero, Libertus are bipedal maniraptoran theropods which typical measure between 2.6 and 2.8 metres high, and 3.1 to 3.4 metres in length, with a typical weight of between 70 and 85 kilograms, indicative of their lean and light-weight physiology. The skull is relatively triangular and robust, while quite narrow in comparison to less advanced species of Capricaerónan theropods, lined with seventy five curved and blade-like teeth. The eyes of Libertus are slitted and large, with the species possessing stereoscopic vision more advanced than that of a typical humanoid species. Libertus possess a larger brain cavity than humans, relative to the size of their bodies, and are well known for their great intelligence, which they put to work in the construction of vast, ornate cities, stunning works of art and ingenious feats of shipbuilding.
Libertus possess long, slender limbs, as well as large clawed hands, with three digits, including an opposable first digit. Like most maniraptorans, Libertus have large, retractable sickle-shaped claws on the second digit of their feet, which are raised off the ground while walking and running. During predation in their prehistoric past, Libertus killed their prey by leaping onto its prey, pinning it with its body weight and gripping and tearing with its killing claw. The sickle claw varies in size based on sex and age, with mature males tending to possess far larger claws than females of a similar age. Young Libertus possess claws with far greater curvature than their elders—an evolutionary product of younger Libertus living predominantly in trees, with the claw becoming straighter as the individual grew older and spent more time hunting on land.
In terms of movement, Libertus are bipedal, and capable of reaching speeds of up to 76 kilometres an hour in short bursts. In general however, Libertus rarely exceed 50 kilometres an hour at full sprint, thus compensating for their clawed foot. Sexual dimorphism exists in Libertus, with males, in addition to possessing larger claws as aforementioned, being slightly larger in build, as well as darker in colouration. Females generally possess softer features, while in terms of plumage, they tend toward brighter colours such as blue, in comparison to male Libertus often being dark red or brown.
Like most dinosaurs, Libertus age quickly, with individuals reaching sexual maturity after twelve standard Cyrannian years. In prehistoric times, Libertus over the age of forty were rare, though due to advances in technology, they can now live for a great deal longer—with individuals over the age of 200 being considered old, and those over 300, considered very old. While the technology exists for biological immortality, Libertus, as with most Cyrannian species, rarely choose such a life. Modern Libertus typically spend their first century in pursuit of their aspirations, and subsequent centuries in advisory positions in society.
“A most insidious species. They do not conquer their foes through war or conquest, they conquer them through smiles, music and culture. They are like Neraida in many respects, though their particular brand of assimilation is even more nefarious...”

“Control the Libertus and one controls the fate of Cyrannus.”
“Hmpf. I have no respect for any of them.”
“The Basileus are, were and will always be superior!”

“The Libertus remind me of my own people, particularly the anciant Ossilan Draconis. They are idealists, engineers and leaders. Their political dominance is another similarity of our own power and success. While I have yet to meet one in person their reputation has reached even the Imperium.”
- - Uriel Ultanos
“We served together under the Republic and now under the Imperial rule, but that is all.”

“We are very much alike.”
“Where would we be without the Libertus, their cousins and friends? We may not have continued to exist, or at least hold true the Seven Starr Alliance without them. We are in their debt, thus, we will protect any Libertus, Republic or Imperial. They may be the champions of politics, and although they downplay their abilities at war, they fought along side us magnificently. I have never seen soldiers charge at the enemy at 90 km/h on foot!”

“I like these guys.”
- The Libertus were originally known as simply Capricornian. However, this name eventually evolved into the Capricyránae, a group of related species.
- They have long been Cyrannian's most potent species, however nowadays his fiction is more spread out.
