They didn't know yet, but the abandoned city they were in was the location of a hive. A hive of the most feared creature in the satellite, more fearsome than the Ghinghase, the only hunter capable of making Eiraghases shiver and flee from the place they found those creatures that easily could have comed out crawling from the christian Hell. The once-more-unlucky teenagers had stumbled upon the apex predator of Gorb Olohya: a hive of Kataro.

Kataro are a multiform hive-minded crustacean species native to Gorb Olohya. They're the apex predator in the planet.

Kataro presumably appeared and evolved in the sattelite Gorb Olohya. It is unknown if they played an important role for the Frento. It is highly possible that the Kataro were a threat to them, due to their hives often being found in abandoned Frento cities.

A Kataro hive located in Ckun-Dag became a major danger to Llurebleg explorers Nynn Vandar and Zano Hylera during Expedition Fidne. The hive's Duricataro was killed during the incursion, causing all the other Kataro to flee.

All Kataro share some common traits: a similar head, fins at the sides of their body, proboscides, etc. However, besides these similarities, the body shape of all Kataro is extremely different. Judging by their appearance and their role to the hive, there are four castes of Kataro:

  • Fedecataro or stalker caste: The generic Kataro. It measures only between one and two meters in lenght, and weights no more than 10 kilograms. They have a round body and four jointed legs: the front limbs end in shovel-like appendages, while the hind limbs end in one sharp claw each. Their head, like that of most other Kataro, is held by a medium-sized neck together with two tusk-like "antennae", and has no features other than two holes. They have a membranous sack on their back, which serves as a liquid storage, and two wide fins on their flanks. They have a long tail that constantly stands upright, ending in a sting-like structure which is actually a proboscis. They are light brown.
  • Judecataro or hunter caste: They are similar to the Fedecataro, but have many differences. They measure between 3 and 4 meters in lenght, stand up to one meter in height and weight between 20 and 30 kilograms. Their body is lithe, resembling that of Earth's wolves, and their feet are two-digited. Rather than crawling like Fedecataro, Judecataro have a more upright posture that allows it to run in a similar fashion to wolves and big cats. Their liquid storage is larger and the tail holding their proboscis has more mobility. Their neck is slightly longer, but the head is almost exactly like that of the Fedecataro. They are brown as well.
  • Vigecataro or flea caste: This special "breed" of Kataro is very different from others, often considered by scientists as a different species despite their role in the colony. It is very small, with a body radius never larger than 10 centimeters and an insignificant weight of between one and three miligrams. They have a round shape and fins longer than those of other Kataro. They don't have a defined head. Their sting-proboscis is located at the bottom of it's body, with their four legs around it. They have two sacks at the top of the body: a smaller inner one which is the food storage, and a larger external one which inflates with helium to help the Kataro float in the air, like a balloon, with their two antennae on the sides. Like Fedecataro and Judecataro, they are brown, although they have a darker shade.
  • Duricataro or queen caste: A massive creature, measuring up to 14 meters in lenght and 5 tonnes in weight. It has a similar head to that of Fedecataro and Judecataro, but its antennae are much longer and thicker. It has a more piscine body, with larger fins and small stumpts that might act as vestigial legs. They have a long tube-shaped ovipositor under their long tail, which doesn't end in a sting-proboscis but in a fin instead. They have many tubes on their back, which are its equivalents to the other Kataro's proboscides. Unlike other Kataro, the Duricataro's color is a bright yellow.

All Kataro are asexual (except the Duricataro, which is an hermaphrodite), so there is no sexual dimorphism between them. All Kataro look nearly the same in their larvae stage (besides Duricataro larvae being yellow instead of brown), but eventually develop different characteristics as they grow up.

In the monotonous enviroment of Gorb Olohya, Kataro have no home to choose but the many rocky plains that, together with a dense bluish mist, cover the whole planet, to which they had to adapt in order to obtain food and water. Unlike other lifeforms in the planet, Kataro hives are located in the ground, only communicated with the surface by medium-sized tunnels, although some Kataro hives surface in abandoned Frento cities, such as Ckun-Dag.

Kataro are a hive minded species: there is no individuality and all the members of a hive live to serve their queen (Duricataro). Kataro are hunters that prey on animals in different ways. All of them have a similar base method: they are capable of producing an acid substance inside it's body and spit it through the holes in their face to melt the flesh of their target, similarily to Eiraghases and Earth's flies, then sucking the liquid with their proboscis; however, this concept is applied in different ways accordingly to the morphology of the caste. After obtaining food, a worker Kataro will only consume a small percentage, storing the rest of it in its sack and taking it to the Duricataro; once they're on the Duricataro's chamber, they'll swim to it and climb on its back, then introduce their proboscis inside one of them many tubes on its back to transfer the liquified food to its digestive system. The three worker Kataro castes contribute to the hive and obtain food in different ways, attending to their adaptations.

  • Fedecataro are designed to dig tunnels and ambush prey; Arzhraghases, to be exact. They are the ones who dig all tunnels in the hive, whether they connect to the outer world, to different chambers inside the hive or to another hive. Some of these btunnels connect to the exterior directly, as the Kataro's acid is capable of melting stone if the amount is large enough, but most have their entrances under the large rock platforms that cover the entirety of Gorb Olohya. They wait under these rocks in small digged chambers, often for entire weeks, sometimes accompained by one or two Judecataro, until a herd of Arzhraghases comes nearby. After coordinating themselves and going into determinate positions, they start producing acid and spray it forward as soon as the Arzhraghases' lift the rock, causing chaos in the herd and forcing them to flee, leaving the injured individuals behind for the Kataro to finish them and suck their liquids.
  • Judecataro are designed to run after they prey. While the Fedecataro wait for herds of Arzhraghases to fall on their trap, the so-called hunter caste walks up to the outer world in small packs and wanders in search of them. Once they get to them, they pursue them and run around in an attempt to put all of them together in one place, similarily to Earth's dolphins. Having a much longer range when spitting their acid, this technique helps them spray it on most of the herd at a time, obtaining much more resources in less time.
  • Vigecataro are designed to obtain a small amount of food from a "prey" without killing it. They absorb helium from the atmosphere to inflate their baloon, then direct themselves using their fins as wings to land on the target's skin. Once they land on it, they will locate its veins and sting them with their proboscis, sucking the blood in it before inflating again and fleeing. They add the acid to the sucked blood once it's inside their body. They are commonly used when a new species is discovered by the hive and it's edibility needs to be "tested" (the events of Expedition Fidne are an example of this).

The Duricataro is the only caste that has a role in reproduction, as all other Kataro are biologically uncapable of it. Duricataro are hermaphrodites: they posess both female and male reproductive organs. They are capable of producing hundreds of eggs and fecundating them alone, but they require large amounts of energy to do so, which is provided by the worker castes in the form of liquified food. Duricataro are semiovoviviparous: the embryos develop inside eggs live those of oviparous animals, but these eggs are stored and incubated inside the queen's body temporarily, similarily to viviparous animals; unlike fully ovoviviparous animals, however, the Duricataro lays the eggs after the tenth day of incubating, making use of its large ovipositor. After incubating the eggs for one month, the eggs hatch. Unlike in other insect hives, where workers take care of infants, the Duricataro is also responsible for feeding and protecting the infants. After they're born, a moderate percentage of the food given to the queen is excreted from the body, exiting by the holes on the queen's face, and becomes the larvae's food.

Kataro are the apex predator in Gorb Olohya, preying on all other creatures of the planet (including the Eiraghase) if they have the chance. They have no natural predators and are feared by all animals that come across them. The only caste that's not feared by other creatures is the Vigecataro, as it's barely capable of causing damage.

It is unknown if the Kataro posed a threat to the Frento. Their advanced technology suggests they were able to avoid the hives during their rising, but they could have been an easy prey to them during their early stages. The presence of Kataro hives in abandoned urbanizations such as Ckun-Dag suggests an extreme possibility of the creatures being capable of invading the Frento's cities, being as such a major factor of them dissapearing.

Kataro have been taxonomically classified as malacostracans of the family Kataridae. As the only members in the taxon, they have no close relatives. This classification is likely to change, though.

Their binominal name is Katarus parascorpius. The genus name alludes to the creature's name, while the epithet means scorpion-like in greek.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • The Fedecataro were inspired by a scorpion toy which lost its pincers, leaving two holes behind which resembled. After it was designed in a drawing, Dinoman972 decided to add two more castes: the Judecataro and the Duricataro. Few days before writing the last part of Expedition, the Vigecataro was concepted and implemented.
    • Kataro were originally going to spray silk to trap their prey before eating it alive, but the concepting of the Duricataro caused the silk to be scrapped in favor of an acid substance.
  • All Kataro use diferent parts for their "sting": the Fedecataro uses a strike part, the Judecataro uses a horn part, the Vigecataro uses a detail part, and the Duricataro, as it lacks the sting, uses a fin part for the tail instead.

Other Trivia[]

  • The Kataro are one of Dinoman972's favorite creatures, due to their appearance diversity, their strange biology, their hive mind and their dangerous nature.
  • The disgusting smell usually perceived in the atmosphere of Gorb Olohya belogns to the pheromones of a Duricataro, which can be perceived by other Kataro in a radius of up to 8 kilometers away from the hive.
  • When a Fedecataro digs a tunnel towards another hive, it might stop receiving the pheromones from its Duricataro and start following orders from the other Duricataro it was digging towards.
