NOTE: This page's content isn't canon to Dinoman972's main fiction, nor to the Fiction Universe in general.

And in the air about him were great viperine creatures, which had curiously distorted heads, and grotesquely great clawed appendages, supporting themselves with ease by the aid of black rubbery wings of singularly monstrous dimensions.

- Quote from The Lurker at the Threshold, by August Derleth

Hunt-horrors, also known as Hunting Horrors, are a large flying pterovermid species native to the Dreamlands. They originated in the novella The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, by the famous writer H.P. Lovecraft.

History[]

Not much is known about the past of the Hunting Horrors. Chances are they either evolved in the ecosystem of the Dreamlands naturally or were created by the Great Ones.

Biology[]

Description[]

Hunting Horrors are rather large creatures, ranging from 3 to 10 meters in lenght, and from 5 to 14 meters in wingspan. Their weight hasn't been measured.

Hunt-horrors are actually amorphous creatures that constantly shapeshift during their lives, having no main form. All of their morphs share some traits, such as large clawed wings and a serpentine body. In this page's representation, Hunting Horrors have six winged limbs, being progressively smaller as they are located further from the head. These wings resemble those of a dragon or a bat, and usually have sharp claws on them. Their body resembles that of a snake or a worm, and has a file of spine-like ornamentation starting on the head and running across the back. The head has maws filled with teeth, six of them being long and sharp tusks, and four eyes: two large ones at the sides of the head, and two smaller hardly visible ones on top of the former. Their tail ends in three hair-like structures with spheres on their ends. They have slimy pink and red skin.

There is no known sexual dimorphism between Hunting Horrors. Their young have never been sighted, so it's unknown how different are they compared to their parents

Traits and abilities[]

TBA

Habitat[]

Hunting Horrors inhabit the Dreamlands. Not much is known about their lifestyle.

Behavior[]

All known Hunting Horrors individuals act as "hunting dogs", apparently at the service of the deity Nyarlathotep. They obey him, attacking whoever the Old One targets and losing their life if they dissapoint their master. They have never been seen feeding or reproducing, and no wild specimens have been found, so it's though that the Hunting-horrors only exist as minions of Nyarlathotep.

Ecology[]

Hunting Horrors have never been seen in wilderness, and the only known populations are hunting dogs of Nyarlathotep, so it is unknown if they have a role in the Dreamlands' ecosystem at all, besides hunting down beings that are targeted by their master.

Taxonomy[]

Hunting Horrors have been taxonomically classified as podoannelids belonging to the Pterovermidae family. As the onlu other member in the family, and despite their many differences, their closest relative are the Eonai Merek.

Their binominal name is Pavortinea venatora, with the genus name meaning horrible worm in latin, and the epithet meaning hunter in the same language.

Quotes on them[]

- Quote from The Lurker at the Threshold, by August Derleth

And hoary Nodens raised a howl of triumph when Nyarlathotep, close on his quarry, stopped baffled by a glare that seared his formless hunting-horrors to grey dust.

- Quote from The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, by H.P. Lovecraft

Trivia[]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Taking advantage of the Hunting Horrors being considered shapeshifting, Dinoman972 decided to make a re-creation that was different from other he saw, rather than just re-creating that of a drawing like he did with the Shantak.
