A clacking sound soon contradicted him. Nynn looked back, and saw how a large animalistic figure emerged from a cloud of dust in a nearby wall. The creature let out a menacing roar, accompained by the sawblades on its head clacking by hitting each other constantly like castanets. Roaring angrily, a Xuz Fahrean Fontis had entered Cyner. Whether it was there to cause trouble or simply was another desperate victim of the events is unknown, but for sure it was willing to make a stop for lunch in its way to safety.

Fahr-Pharaos, also known as Xuz Fahrean Fontis (plural is the same as singular), Lesser Fontis, or simply as Fontis, are a species of polylopimid native to Xuz Fareh.

Etymology[]

The original name, Fahr-Pharao, comes from Frenton, and means Xuz Fahrean Pharao. Pharao, at the same time, is the name given to the Cyardalean species, and means hurricane in Frenton, refering to the creature's spinning attack.

The word fontis was created by the Llurebleg, and means razor in Baranian, refering to the creature's head weapons and tail claws. The same word convergently appeared within the New Gods Empire, being derived from the Franglish word faunt, which roughly translates to demon, probably refering to the creature's aggresive behavior.

Biology[]

Description[]

Fontis are large predators, although remarkably smaller than the regular species. They can measure between 7 and 8 meters in lenght, 3 to 4 meters in height, and four to seven tonnes.

Fontis highly resemble theropods, with a reptilian body shape and long, four-digited feet, halfway between those of reptiles and birds, with the creatures standing in three large toes and leaving the fourth one hanging in the air. Their most notable trait is their bizarre head, which like that of the regular species, posesses three bony articulate appendages ending in spinning saw-like structures, and two large membranous frills in the neck: these features, however, are smaller than those in the regular species. Their jaws are long and crocodilian, with a series of thorns in the snout. Another distinctive trait of Fontis is their long tails, which end in five jointed appendages, resembling the claws of a mantis. Their limbs are bony, and their graspers have three "digits", which resemble small tentacles. They also posess a sail on their back, slightly resembling that of Earth's Spinosaurus, and a fin-like structure at the start of their tail. They are covered in red, blue and green scales.

Sexual dimorphism exists in Xuz Fahrean Fontis, but is less prononunced than that in the Common Fontis: males usually have slightly larger frills. Juvenile Fontis aren't too different from their parents, besides their shorter head saws and frills.

Traits and abilities[]

Surprisingly for their size, Fontis are fast and agile, and regardless of their apparent lack of muscular mass, they are quite strong. However, it isn't completely protected from attacks, with its underbelly and flanks being completely defenseless. It's also worth noting that the Fontis' muscles are extraordinarily flexible.

Fontis are well know for their signature ability: they can jump and bend their body in the form of a spinning circle, letting it's head saws and clawed tail cause massive damage on its path. The main effect is cutting the target, leaving severe wounds and likely killing it, but it can also be conbined with the prehensile appendages of the tail to grab the prey in midair, then slamming it on the floor, causing severe wounds and inability to escape due to their now broken bones, if not death. More basic ways of attacking for a Fontis including a tail whip that might grab prey to perform aforementioned attack, a simple powerful bite, or cutting through the skin of a target above its head, such as a flying Wistompt, using its head structures. It can also let out powerful roars to intimidate competitors. Its short arms are rather useless in fighting, but are actually quite strong and can be used for grabbing weakened prey, such as those hit by their grappling ability, and hold them in place to devour them, similarily to Earth's Tyrannosaurus.

Habitat[]

Xuz Fahrean Fontis inhabit a large variety of ecosystems, but they prefer forests and plains where much prey is available.

Behavior[]

Fontis are solitary creatures by nature, spending the majority of their lifetime wandering in the wild alone. Similarily to the common species, Fontis are highly aggresive creatures that will react violently to almost every other animal they come across, including Llurebleg inside their land vehicles. When hungry, Fontis are a reckonable force, making use of their anatomical weapons and agility to violently kill any prey they can find before eating it. However, they aren't nearly as ravenous as their Cyardalean counterparts or Jawwhorls, and have certain limits when hunting: they won't attempt to hunt creatures such as Snotguns and Pycari, certain that they would lose, and will rather just attempt to intimidate them and drive them off before actually attacking them if left no other choice. A hunting Fontis and an angry one can be distinguished by their behavior: when their wish is to ward off another creature, they will usually stand with their head high in the air, displaying their frills, and clash their head structures together while spinning them, emitting a clacking sound, in order to intimidate the creature instead of attacking directly; when a Fontis is hungry, however, it will outright attack on sight with brute strenght in order to kill the creature before it has the chance to escape.

Fontis don't have a set mating season, and will reproduce at any time of the year. Unlike their extremely territorial Cyardalean counterparts, the Xuz Fahrean species are usually peaceful towards members of the opposite gender, although they usually prefer to keep their distance from each other, due to the possibility of a conflict rising between the two. If a time of approximately two or three days pass with two individuals of the opposite sex living near each other without conflict, they will copulate, producing 2-3 eggs, and then separate. Being semiovoviviparous animals, Fontis females will keep their eggs inside their body for some time, while she looks for a safe place to lay them. A month after the copulation, the female will lay the eggs and leave them on their own. The hatchlings, which are born capable of walking and running, will live alone for the rest of their life. They reach sexual maturity around the age of 5.

Taxonomy[]

The Lesser Fontis has been taxonomically classified in Polylopimidae, a theropod family. It shares genus with the Common Fontis, and their other close relative seems to be the Rainbow, morphology-wise.

Their binominal name is Serratocephalus xuzfahrensis. The genus name means saw head in greek, while the epithet means from Xuz Fareh in latin.
