...It is unlike anything I have ever heard. The universe bows to the power of its speech; the very fabric of reality bends and twists to suit its wielder. It is often spoken of as the tongue of creation - it could very well be a tongue of destruction if one saw fit. Awe upon those who speak it, and dread upon those who it is spoken to.

- Emperor Keleivel, c. 28,500 BNA

The Arcadian Language, known among Koldenweltians as the Phoenix Tongue is the indigenous language of the Arcadians, spoken in the realms of Midnight and Zenith. One of the oldest languages known to the world of Koldenwelt, the Arcadian Language became prevalent on the continent at the turn of the thirtieth millennium BNA, though is thought to have quickly diversified into what is known possibly as the Primordial Tongue and multiple other languages related to it in the centuries after.

History[]

Very little to nothing is known of the Arcadian Language itself, though many linguists across Koldenwelt have come to suggest that the Arcadian Language is perhaps a predecessor to Primordial Tongue, the first most widely spoken language on Koldenwelt. Concerning some of the most ancient stories to survive into the New Age, the Echdrarothrayu, known as the Phoenixes, descended upon Koldenwelt to introduce civilisation and language to the Orichalcum Elf and Néva cultures, as well as what is thought to have been some of the elder Kelodhrosi and Theriocephali cultures. Despite having a firm place geographically at the turn of 30,000 BNA, the Arcadian Language quickly diversified and sprachbund, alongside morphological and phonetic evolution occurred, possibly resulting in Primordial Tongue.

The Orichalcum Elves however, though retaining much of the original language, nevertheless diversified in interaction with Primordial Tongue, and eventually resulted in the evolution of the Protodynastic Language that was known to have been spoken during the reign of Keleivel during the twenty-eighth millennium BNA. Orichalcum Elf names such as Aurtalvaseius and Keleivel may have had roots in the Arcadian Language. Whilst it remained as its own language through education under the Order of Sol, more and more of the language was forgotten over the ages, and by the dissolution of the Orichalcum Elf Imperium circa 5,000 BNA, education in the language, and its speakers were virtually lost. The last living 'true' speaker of the Arcadian Language is Longinus, though it is a somewhat guarded secret.

Characteristics[]

Language and Magic[]

It is often described in myth, that the Arcadian Language held intrinsic magical properties; how this may relate to High Elven is up to interpretation - quite possibly no relation whatsoever considering the variety of magic users on Koldenwelt. The characteristics of the magical power held by the language remains vague, though it is thought that the speakers of the language could conjure vast degrees of storm and sun magic, if they possessed the capability to do so. The Order of Sol maintained their claim that the Arcadian Language could bend the will of dragons and Elementals given the circumstance.

There are no surviving instances or transcripts of any incantation in the Arcadian Language; however, it was frequently said that to mantle the weapon known as Aurtalvaseius' Wrath was done so through a lengthy recital of an spell in the Arcadian Language; binding one's soul to the weapon.
