Our race was born for one key purpose! For conquest. Love, law, friendship, these have no place in the Hive-fleet's path of conquest. Do not dilute yourself, my children, thinking otherwise.

- Changeling Hive-Queen Auriela to her drones.

Changelings, or in their tongue, Meganotura, are a race of parasitic beings with an affinity towards energy and essence. This affinity, comes from their constant hunger, and they are always seeking out those with strong essence power to devour and absorb, so as to strengthen themselves and maintain their health and wellness. To make this easier, Changelings will commonly use their shape-shifting to infiltrate and manipulate empires and colonies within Mirus to feed them, sometimes turning tribal civilizations into their feeding colonies, breeding them to produce high-essence individuals at certain times to slick their thirsts.

Changelings are an arrogant and haughty race, believing it is their right to rule, and other races mere meat for their hives and troops. Little care is placed upon what they deem "inferiors", and will use other Brotherhood races, known for their aggression, such as the Skallin and Dragowar, as meat shields for when they infiltrate. The only race that is spared of this treatment, ironically, are the brash and violent Skordi, who the Changelings views as brothers. Partially out of respect for "common ancestry", and partially out of the fact the Skordi are the only race that seem capable of detecting Changeling infiltrators in their ranks. As such, Skordi Warbands and Changeling Hive-fleets commonly work together, the brutish application of force of the Skordi working well with the deceitful nature of the Changelings.

History[]

Creation[]

The Changelings evolved as a race called the Meganotura, a group of gigantic dragonfly-like creatures that feed upon the flesh and energy of other races. Somehow, despite their homeworld being hostile and a shifting mass of tectonic plates, volcanic eruptions, and flowing magma, they evolved and gained the ability to travel through space, though their troubles did not end, their lust for power, the drive to dominate, and their flesh-eating habits lead many races to reject or outright attack them in an attempt to destroy the swarms. Desperate for help, the Meganotura retreated to their "Crown Worlds", and attempted to hold off the foes. Help arrived one day, in the form of a being who took many shapes, before settling into a Dragon-like form. The being called himself Spidrax, and offered to turn the Meganotura into powerful beings that could master any shape, like he had done, and have powerful abilities over "magic", to defeat and cripple their foes.

The Three Queens gathered around and listened intently, and agreed to let him edit them and improve their powers and bodies. Spidrax, delighted, brought his agents and assistants with him, and brought them onto their homeworld, and began his editing of the species. Many years went by, the Cults and Legions under his command holding the enemy at bay, as he perfected and modified the Meganotura into the creatures that would be the "Changelings". Here, he granted them not only a harder, sturdier black carapace, but further gifted their forms with incredible essence ability, including telepathy and telekinesis, and, most prominent of all, Shape-shifting. This was a rather controversial note among Darklings, who felt the power of Shape-shifting should be only theirs to receive and keep.

Many, jealous of Spidrax's accomplishment, wished to destroy the Changelings and punish Spidrax for his sins of sharing such a gift. Terikalinra, Lord of the Darklings, stayed their hands, and visited the Changelings, liking their abilities and cunning, and inducted them into his Brotherhood as infiltrators and commanders. As a test of their abilities, he ordered them to infiltrate and destroy the three empires that surrounded them and threatened them, watching with bemusement as the Changelings did as told, the three swarms destroying the empires they were assigned in their own unique ways, Terikalinra considering them worthy.

The Changelings, sometime after this, began to infiltrate and look into the actions and behaviors of other empires, many of their best infiltrators soon forced into the Ku'Orull Swarmhood via the pheromones their hives released. Sometime later, the Changelings veined support for the Cult of Attzerry, a group aligned with the Tarmealox Hierarchy.

Joining the Powers[]

When the Enlightenment War broke out, the Changelings who where loyal to the Cult of Attzerry, who far out-numbered their Brotherhood-loyal brethren, fought alongside each other, though after an Queen Trodaka was betrayed, they dicided to aid their close ally, and joined the Zarbania Powers, lead by Empress Auriela, and High Commander of Lust, they left the Cult of Attzerry, disgusted with the Alpha Grox's betrayal.

Sometime later, the Changelings would send some members of their kind to join the United Bygorian Ascendancy, like many Zarbanian species in a bid to protect and improve the standing of the Bygorians in Cyrannus. The Changelings took on roles in intelligence and counter-spying, used to keep infiltrators out of Bygore and it's government, weary of Bygorian legends of a Race of Star-Going demons that could take any shape they wished and burned whole worlds to ash. The Changelings, more sensitive to other shape-shifters, would be able to detect these beings, if they existed, and root them out.

After the defeat of the Ascendancy by Imperial forces during the Second Cyrannus War, the Changelings entirely disappeared, perhaps fearing Imperial reprisals against them and hunts, as had been done on Terrae as an excuse to institute fascist elements into the government.

Back in Mirus, a group of Changelings would split off from the rest, pursuing their own goals and ideals separate from the rest, and taking a different approach to things.

Culture[]

Changelings are truly leprous, disgusting race. Not one of them is capable of altruism or friendship towards another! They would gladly claw and bite at one another until only one remains to declare itself queen! Even if you offered them a way out, none would take it, for they are so concerned with consuming and "proving" how much better they are, that they would not take a cure for their decadent ways!

- Ugandalorian Clan Chief of Clan Darius

Changelings are a society based upon thievery and back-stabbing. They advance in rank and position in The Hive based off how much the deceit and use others, similar to the Lambda Grox of the Alpha Cyber Collective, position earned off killing the one who held the position before you, or deceiving them in some way into giving it to you, which is always more rewarding. After all, it is one thing to kill an alert rival, it is another to manipulate an already manipulative target.

All changelings answer to one of three Queens, divided into three Hive-Fleets, and each nominally untied with the other. Although outsiders consider them decadent and treasonous, Changelings are prone to developing tight bonds and kinsmanship with each other, and even with outside races, despite their xenophobic attitudes. Indeed, Changelings usually avoid feeding on close allies of other races, even if they are low on energy and must feed to maintain themselves. Still, a Changeling will always take the chance to destroy a rival of higher position, and this alliance and friendship is normally saved for those of equal rank (So long as the opportunity to move up is not present), or for allies outside the Hive.

Biology[]

Changelings, as a whole, are hard to understand and study, due to their shapeshifting nature and distant attitudes. Members who die are usually taken to be ritually devoured by the rest of the Hive as a funeral ritual, and those that cannot die, receive a special implant that they can activate with a trigger phrase to melt their body down. What is known is surface level, such as their ability to shape shift without DNA and the like, and their long stinger tails.

The tail is their main means of gaining energy from a victim, often inserting it into their flesh and extracting the energy they need. Changelings can not only do physical damage to a target when they do this, but also short-out essence abilities, causing the target to be unable to discharge any form of essence attacks so long as the tail remains. Destroying the tail can, often, result in the Changeling dying instantly, or, if strong enough, stunning them and rending them catatonic.

Changelings are not naturally strong, but are extremely fast and dangerous in close quarters, using long, serrated claws to cleave flesh off their foes, or their wings to zip and fly around their victims in fast speeds.

Their reproductive organs are left inactive under the Hive Queens, so none will come into conflict with her. However, when infiltrating empires, they are capable of reproducing, often creating hybrids from other races.

Individuals[]

The Three Hive Queens[]

Among the Changelings, they are divided into three Hives, each ruled by a powerful Queen, and each the sister to the other. The Changelings believe these three were the first, and gave birth to the rest of the race as a whole. They were the ones to accept Darkling Spidrax's invitation to join their Brotherhood, and gain shape-shifting powers. Each one commands their own powers and abilities, and has a distinctive look that separates them from their sisters, and their common drones. They are near immortal, and, if they die, it is said they will transfer their identity onto a newly laid drone in their hive to secure their personality.

The Initiated[]

  • Name - Hedo'Aristin
  • Race - Raptoranean

Hedo'Aristin is an Raptoranean Centurion, famous for his sexual urges. His parents were killed by the former High Commander of Lust, but as she was about to leave, she felt life in the womb of the mother. Tearing it open, she ripped Hedo'Aristin out with care, and raised him as her own. When the Centurion project was started, Hedo'Aristin was recruited and put through the forced evolution process. Now, he felt pleasure by the slightest rush of adrenaline, or by slightest impulse, such as pain. He became larger, with his already pupilless green eyes becoming jade-like in look, with his eyes being outlined in a thick black. Furthermore, his arms became almost like wings, covered in magnificent golden and blood red feathers, though mostly golden.

Hedo'Aristin is an infamous hedonist, as extreme as the late Hedon Morillium, if not a little more. He indulges himself in fine foods, drinks, and will often seduce females of all species using his phonemes. He has a deep affinity for music, and noise in general. He is an expert with many instruments, and is said to be the best singer of the Centurions.

They work soo well. It's actually surprising. These beings truly are worthy of being my servants. Once I am a God, I may still keep them.

They manipulative, deceitful, and devour anything that is smaller or doesn't keep it's eye open. I love them.

- Meta Prophet

Changelings. Changelings. The name says it all, doesn't it? Definitly a great pain in the ass. Not to mention that Hive-Fleet Archoadhis tries to infiltrate and overthrow us every now and then. Though, were they on our side, I would absolutely love them.

- W'tze

The Meganotura? Well, some Dragowar say they are cowards for they hide behind deception...But I can see their use in spreading Eternal War. They are the Changelings after all...
