Looking by the huge gap that was now visible to the attackers, Zano and Nynn finally saw the face of one of them. It was a large and gruesome creature, with an elongated neck covered by slimy skin and a huge flat horn-like structure coming out from its round teeth-filled mouth, which seemingly had a second teeth-filled mouth inside. The teenagers knew they were in danger when the creature bellowed at them, showing its second round jaw.

Arzhraghases (plural for Arzhraghase) are a large and aggresive agnathid species native to Gorb Olohya.

History[]

Arzhraghases presumably appeared and evolved in the sattelite Gorb Olohya. It is unknown if they played an important role from the perspective of the satellite's sapients (if there ever were, of course).

Arzhraghase herds became a major danger to Llurebleg explorers Nynn Vandar and Zano Hylera during their expedition to the satellite.

Biology[]

Description[]

Arzhraghases are large creatures, measuring up to 8 meters in length (without including the "horn"), around 2 meters in height, and a weight of up to 5 tonnes.

Arzhraghases are bulky creatures, covered in a thin and slimy pink skin where some veins and arteries are visible. They have a long and flexible neck that ends in a round double-jawed mouth filled with sharp teeth. They have no eyes nor visible ears. Two of the upper teeth in the outer jaw are merged together and have grown to an enormous size, now resembling a long flat horn capable of reaching lengths of 3 meters. Arzhraghases only have two limbs, consisting of strong legs ended in mammalian feet with five digits: three elephantine toes that form the feet itself, and two large protuding spurs. Their tail resembles that of a theropodal dinosaur.

There is no known sexual dimorphism between Arzhraghases.

Habitat[]

In the monotonous enviroment of Gorb Olohya, Arzhraghases have no home to choose but the many rocky plains that, together with a dense bluish mist, cover the whole planet, to which they had to adapt in order to obtain food and water.

Behavior[]

Arzhraghases live in large herds, which may be formed by up to 50 individuals. Since they are blind, they use echolocation to stay together, commonly emitting loud bellows in order to locate their partners. Arzhraghase herds have a leading individual, which always walks with its head down, the floor with the "horn" in order to find the gaps between rock platforms. Once one is found, the Arzhraghase leader warns the other ones with a loud bellow and coordinates everyone, leading every member to slide their "horns" under the rock. Making use of their strong muscles and working together, the Arzhraghases lift the platform, revealing the Ypobrachophyta inside it. After the plant reacts by releasing tons of glowing spores, the Arzhraghases reveal their second jaw and suck some of the spores with it, which serve as their food source.

Arzhraghases are very sensitive to noise, and herds will become chaotic when they heard a sound that doesn't belong to another Arzhraghase. They will stomp around and bellow loudly in attempts to find a possible predator. When something is located, they will angrily attack it until they believe it dead. When there is no strange noises and no predators seem present, Arzhraghases are rather calm and peaceful creatures.

Ecology[]

Arzhraghases, as herbivorous creatures, sit low in the food chain, only outclassing plant life. They feed on Ypobrachophyta spores, but often eat the plants themselves as a result due to their impressive sucking force. Their main predators are the Ghinghases. Arzhraghases are rather essential to the ecosystem, since the Ypobrachophyta can only release their spores when the creatures lift the rocks they live under to feed on them.

It is unknown if the Arzhraghases played or still play a role in the lives of the satellite's sapient inhabitants (in case there are). It is unlikely they are used as cattle, as they prove to be very dangerous when disturbed, and any noise they're not used to causes them to rampage.

Taxonomy[]

Arzhraghases have been taxonomically classified as agnathids belonging to the Bipedia family. Appearance-wise, they don't seem to have any close relatives, as they are the only bipedians with two limbs.

Their binominal name is Arzhraghase petranypsosi, with the genus word refering to the creature's name, and the eptihet meaning stone lifter in greek.

The Arzhraghases fed on Ypobrachophyta: a species of plant that was located under the rocks of the planet. The moment the horned creatures, with effort and teamwork, lifted up the rocks, the plants could finally photosynthetize, as well as releasing their spores to reproduce. The Arzhraghases, due to their collaboration, were rewarded with some of those spores: their only food source in a hostile world.

Trivia[]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • The head of the Arzhraghases was partially inspired by that of the Khezu from the japanese RPG videogame series Monster Hunter.
  • The "horns" of Arzhraghases were inspired by those of brontotheriids, an extinct family of mammals related to horses and rhinos which includes animals such as Megacerops (also known as Brontotherium) and Embolotherium.
  • The Arzhraghase is the first creature in the fiction to be concepted as a drawing before being created in-game.
  • Arzhraghases are one of the few creatures that have been created exclusively for the fiction, instead of being pre-made creations that were reused for it.

Other Trivia[]

  • Arzhraghases are the first of Gorb Olohya's fauna to be included in the fiction.
    • They are also the first creatures to be implemented that do not inhabit Xuz Fareh.
  • Arzhraghases used to be classified as podoannelids belonging to the Bipodoannelidae family. They were reclassified due to their mammalian features.
