Yhslivanes (Aerocaulus skorpioura), also known as kureles or Aerocauls, are a flying entomosalamandran species native to Xuz Fareh.

HistoryEdit

Aerocauls are native to the planet Xuz Fareh. Apart from the niche they occupy in the ecosystem of the planet, this species hasn't participated in any major historical events so far.

BiologyEdit

DescriptionEdit

The length of Aerocauls ranges from 3 to 4 meters (~10-13 feet), their wingspan is around 4 meters (~13 feet), and their weight ranges between 50 and 60 kilograms (~110-132 pounds).

Aerocauls are creatures that posess a long, bulky body. Their most distinguishable trait is their amphibian-like head with two protrusions at the sides. It has reptilian eyes. Aerocauls posess two wings resembling those of a dragon, and two jointed hind legs with feet resembling those of a grasshopper. Their tail is long and thin, and it ends in a large stinger with small spikes on it. Their skin is slimy, similar to that of a salamander, and it's yellow and orange.

There is no sexual dimorphism between the two genders in this species. Despite the many features they share with amphibians, baby Aerocauls are extremely similar to their parents, and do not undergo a tadpole stage before becoming adults.

Traits and abilitiesEdit

Surprisingly for their bulk, Aerocauls are agile creatures that can maneuver with their sting really well in mid air, and are efficiently fast swimmers. Plus, their legs have incredible muscular strenght, helping them to take off making use of jumping remarkably high, often reaching heights of 5 meters and lenghts of 10 meters. However, Aerocauls are slow and clumsy on land and don't fly very fast. Additionally, their slimy skin is uncapable of protect them from most attacks.

The Aerocaul's sting is its main (and argurably only) weapon, as well as a pretty efficient one. They can use their agility with their sting in order to wound or even kill many predators in midair; however, it might as well be mortally wounded or overwhelmingly exhausted due to being outnumbered by their main rivals: Raptorels. Also, due to its swimming abilities, an Aerocaul might lure its enemy into water, where it will gain terrain advantage. In land, however, Aerocauls are rather clumsy and slow-moving, causing them to be disadvantaged in battles against land predators like Jawwhorls and Stroths. They can also use their exoskeletal legs to deliever kicks to their enemies, but this is rather useless when taking into account their clumsy land movement and most Aerocauls prefer to rely on their stinged tails to attack.

HabitatEdit

Aerocauls mainly reside in the wet and swampy areas of Xuz Fareh. They can be found occasionally on other areas; however, this almost exclusively happens when they are moving from one marshland area to another.

BehaviorEdit

Aerocauls are omnivorous creatures. They mainly feed on fish and kelp found on the water bodies it frequents. However, it can also feed on small land animals like Watoadzards, and scavenge on the corpses left by other predators like Raptorels and Jawwhorls. Aerocauls are solitary creatures, rarely found in groups except when they mate. Aerocauls can tolerate the presence of herbivores in their territory, and they are usually docile even in presence of sapient species like the Llurebleg (unless harmed by them, of course); however, they will be hostile against predators, with the Raptorels being their main natural enemies. When threatened, they usually low their body to the floor and raise their tail to show their sting. Against Raptorels, Aerocauls will wield aerial battles, during which the Aerocaul will try to stab the birds and take the birds down.

Aerocauls, unlike many other animals in the planet, have a set mating season. Happening simultaneously with the mating season of of Pycari, Aerocauls leave their lonely attitude and start looking for a mate during the fifth Xuz Fahrean month. When two members of the opposite gender encounter, they will reproduce and then separate The female will move back to a swamp area, where she will lay her eggs and take care of them until the hatchlings are born.

EcologyEdit

Due to their size and combat skills, Aerocauls are in the middle of the food chain, rivaling with Stroths and Raptorels, but yet being outclassed by large and/or more ferocious predators like Fontis, Wildcarnagers and Pycari. Their main prey are small fish, aquatic plants, Cuttleshrooms and small animals such as Watoadzards, as said before. Also mentioned before, the Raptorels are the greatest enemies of the Aerocauls, both of them being engaged in what appears to be a constant competition for the role of aerial predator in every environment they share.

Unlike with many other fauna in the planet, Aerocauls haven't been greatly affected by the appearance of the Llurebleg's civilization. They rarely interfer with the hard-to-explore swamps of the planet, leaving the Aerocaul's prefered home biomes almost untouched.

TaxonomyEdit

Aerocauls are currently classified as an entomosalamandran belonging to the family Aerocaulidae.

Their binominal name is Aerocaulus skorpioura. The genus name means air caul in Greek, as well as reflecting the creature's name, while the epithet means scorpion tail in the same language.

TriviaEdit

Behind the ScenesEdit

  • The first Aerocaul concept used different wings added by Dark Injection. However, these wings had a strange "ghosty" effect that caused them to sometimes turn invisible in the editor, so they were replaced by the vanilla Megachiroraptora instead.
    • It also had a modded part which allowed it to spit fire, but it was also removed because it didn't make sense at all.
  • The Aerocaul's name and head structure were clearly inspired by the real-life Diplocaulus, an extinct genus of salamander-like tetrapods.

Other TriviaEdit

  • The Aerocaul's body plan and feet highly resemble those of the Winged Creature.
  • The Aerocaul slightly resembles a traditional wyvern, since it has two legs, one pair of bat-like wings, a tail ending a sting and no arms. However, it barely resembles a reptile, having mixed traits of arthropods and lepospondyls instead.
    • Additionally, its Diplocaulus-like head unintendedly causes it to bear a slight resemblance with the Cephalos, a wyvern-like creature in the japanese RPG series Monster Hunter.
