I follow his path for he is governed by the will of the gods, but I'll say this; for his quick wit and sleight of hand, he can be a true imbecile at times.

- Riad

Pelagrios is a human sellsword who wanders the world of Principaria. Though not world-renowned, Pelagrios has garnered some repute as a capable, if not unorthodox individual. Formerly a wanted pirate who was mutinied and left for dead, Pelagrios' life was saved by the demon Riad who has since followed his somewhat turbulent path. Though ultimately good at heart, Pelagrios has a reputation of being a scoundrel and lives a somewhat debaucherous life.

History[]

Little is known of Pelagrios' childhood, though it is assumed that he, like many who fall into adolescent banditry and piracy, was orphaned in his infancy. Pelagrios spent much of his early life as a pickpocket in the service of low-level criminals such as kidsmen, likely moving between masters and escaping capture as many of his ilk used to. During this time, he acquired a skill of sleight of hand and charismatic deception. By his late teens, Pelagrios had found himself as part of a pirate crew and eventually became captain of his own ship by his early twenties. Despite his unscrupulous upbringing and way of life, Pelagrios refused the notion of killing targets of piracy or opposing forces, which became the primary factor of his mutiny a few years later.

Effectively left for dead, Pelagrios was thrown overboard his own ship and spent days adrift in the sea, before washing up on the shore of a beach. By sheer luck, the beach was used as a camp by the demon-assassin Riad, who managed to save Pelagrios' life by sheltering him. Riad believed that Pelagrios was gifted, perhaps divinely, in the way of fortune despite his life's direction. After saving his life, Riad felt obliged to preserve it until Pelagrios reached his life's destination, wherever that may be; since then, the two have travelled as a pair.

Penniless, Pelagrios sought to regain some wealth and means of survival with Riad's help. Upon an entering a nearby city some few days' ride away, he concocted a scheme in which he falsely captured Riad for a considerable fortune. Though succeeding in doing so, the city guard elected to capture Pelagrios himself - a wanted pirate - for his bounty. Being both imprisoned and destined for execution, Riad aided Pelagrios in escaping the prison but not before seizing their bounties for themselves. Since then, Pelagrios has worked in reinventing his image as a pirate to that of a sellsword; with the aid of Riad, he has accumulated some reputation as a skilled - if not unscrupulous individual.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Pelagrios is a man of average height and build, though many would consider him to be markedly fairer than the average man. His medium-to-long hair is unusual for men of his apparent culture, though more common among pirates. His relatively light skin and fair hair suggests that he hails from the heartlands of the human-inhabited world of Principaria, though Pelagrios remarks that he lived in other lands in his childhood. After acquiring a living, Pelagrios sought to purchase distinctive and functional clothing, which culminated in a brown leather trenchcoat and items of armour covering his more vulnerable areas. The hat, also purchased, is an unusual tricorne normally only found on seafarers and men of nobility, though Pelagrios deems the hat somewhat idiosyncratic and distinguished.

Personality[]

Raised in the unprincipled ways of criminality since infancy, it is surpising that Pelagrios has maintained a moral code of ethics. Though not above stealing or tricking his way out of situations, Pelagrios outrightly refuses to harm the innocent and unfortunate. It is believed that was uncommonly shown kindness as a child where most would not have been, though he has given no real indication. Pelagrios has a reputation of being sly and roguish; his main targets of stealing are typically other criminals or those in a position of power that abuse it. A noted aficionado of debauchery, Pelagrios has spent many nights drinking and womanising, often already-married woman which has resulted in him becoming an unwelcome individual in a number of places and has accumulated multiple bounties for disturbance of the peace.

Abilities[]

As a product of thievery and criminality, Pelagrios has attained formidable skill as a wordsmith and is often able to talk his way out of problematic scenarios, or send his would-be aggressors into a state of internal conflict. Pelagrios possesses sleight of hand that makes even seasoned thieves and tricksters alike appear amateur; Riad remarks that he possesses the touch of a trained member of his order, although the moments he chooses to apply this skill is more often ill-timed than not. Pelagrios is a skilled swordsman, though pales in comparison to veterans of combat. He has however taken words of advice from Riad, from which has benefitted.
